Off Topic Fun / Re: So I'm off to Toronto next month...
« on: June 11, 2014, 09:49:21 PM »
I live in Toronto. It kinda feels incestuous to think of my own hometown in terms of tourist attractions, though. Like trying to recommend a cousin to a friend.  :)

My personal "favourite places to be" are the libraries, especially these two: the Toronto Reference Library and the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation, and Fantasy.

People don't usually direct tourists to libraries, but it is actually the first thing that came to my mind. They are like home to me.

In addition to libraries, Toronto is host to a number of galleries and museums, most notably the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

I went to Ripley's Aquarium of Canada not long ago, and that was pretty interesting.

Toronto also has all sorts of events and festivals. Whenever you are coming there is always something going on. I prefer to avoid those, but I am introverted so what do I know?

Toronto has a tourism website, which has information, probably.

There are loads of good restaurants to eat in, and parks or communities to walk through.

Feel free to ask about anything.

Hey FlamingCows, check your Combat Stats on your sheet.  Tis empty.
Whoops! Completely forgot about finishing my sheet. Sorry about that.  :-\

I'll fix it up later tonight.

EDIT: I am a total liar. I'd say I'll fix it up tonight instead, but I'm half-asleep already so I don't think that will work. Trying again tomorrow morning.  :blush

It would depend on the strength of the material and how deep below the tunnel was dug. They did not give clarification because that is too complicated for game rules, and the DM will have to judge the situation individually.

Thank you for posting that. I suggest adding a citation so that people who are not familiar with the original can know where it came from, i.e. that it is from Monte Cook's old website, and that Monte Cook is one of D&D's game designers.

What's sad about this article is that Monte Cook got a lot of undeserved hate for it, from people who did not read it properly. In this article he comes across as thoughtful, level-headed and a bit apologetic, the complete opposite of how he is portrayed by people on many forums.

The cat thinks up a reply:

< In the interest of saving time I'll say we go to the forest. A quick, workable decision is all we need for now. No need to ponder something when we lack the means to know what is better. >

Yes, I am here. I do not think I would get any use from a list of feats targeting creatures, but you can do it if you want to.

I'm looking for feats that help a character fight with improvised weapons. Any ideas?

If I can talk to them in my sleep, then surely I can also talk to you. We can begin that scene when all the PCs go to sleep.

I don't have anything to add, except maybe trying to use the Push function of the Handle Humanoid skill to get some NPC to feed me gourmet. But that can be handled in the background, no need to clutter up the in-character thread with excessive meowing. Cat form has its limits in roleplay sessions.

But still, where is skill-based dodgitude represented in 3e (and earlier e's) if not in hit points?
Dexterity bonus to AC, Dodge bonus to AC, and reflex saves. Plenty of skill-based dodgitude is available.

The explanation of hit points is plenty coherent, it only becomes incoherent once people put their own notions of what Hit Points are instead of what the rules represent.

Here are some Third Party supplements that deal with mass combat:

Cry Havoc by Malhavoc Press

Ultimate Battle by Legendary Games

Warpath by Adamant Entertainment

These are merely places to start, because I do not know enough about them to give recommendations.

Edit: More PF siege weapons.

I found another siege weapon in Dragon Mag: the Living Catapult, in Dragon 285. Ever played the Age of Empires series, with the self-propelling siege weapons? Its one of those.

Also, Dragon Magazine 294 has vehicle combat rules, including siege towers.

Pathfinder has Mass Combat rules, developed for their Kingmaker adventure path and updated in Ultimate Combat.

Dragon Magazine #295 offers additional siege weapons, both mundane and magical. It is a great issue for sieges, offering weapons, new stronghold components, pre-built castles, and the Master Siege Engineer prestige class.

The two cats look at the paladin, then look at each other.

"Meow." "Meow."

They hop down from the doctor's knee, and approach the paladin's position. Their movements are in sync, avoiding tactical obstacles as they close the distance to their target. They brace for impact, and. . . simultaneously rub their whole bodies against her legs.

They sit down in front of her, and make a face that looks something like this:

Shade offers his paw for a handshake.

Hmmm, I tried to differ people by the color of their text.  Is it not working out?  Know of a better way I could go about that?
You could also use different fonts. There are many to choose from. It might get tiresome for you, however. Mentioning their names would help more than anything, because that would give them something to stick to in memory.

A character guide, with a picture, a name, and the script used for the character would keep everything clear.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: PF And statistics! :D
« on: May 24, 2014, 03:20:27 PM »
If the points system does not take into account what spells can do, then the points system is useless. Yes, if I ignore all the spells and look at only the Wizard's class features, he is a commoner with a pet. But to look at it that way is completely retarded. The very first thing I would ask when you show me a Wizard's stats on a paper is "Where are his spells? What do they do?"

I did look at the magic section: the multipliers are fractional, which means they reduce the value rather than increase it. The value of spellcasting is hilariously low.

That's not the only thing wrong with this system, either. For example, it rates a d12 hit die as being worth 20 points more than a d10 hit die. The difference is one hit point per level. You could take a single feat and it would do it better. Likewise it rates Simple Weapon Proficiency and Light Armour Proficiency as being worth 10 points each, when they, too, can be gotten with just a feat. A one skill point per level increase is counted as worth 8.5 points, when that is also just one feat. Meanwhile, it rates a bonus feat as a Normal Ability with 1 point, multiplied by 4 if I get it at low level. The guy who wrote this had good intentions, but didn't know the value of anything.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: PF And statistics! :D
« on: May 24, 2014, 02:02:51 PM »
But the Ranger does not have the same basic spell usage as a Druid. The Druid has nine levels of spells, the Ranger has only four. A ranger has a caster level of only one-half his class level.

Either the system is so inaccurate that it is useless, or you counted it wrong somehow. I'll read up on it to be sure.

EDIT: The system is useless. I got a lower total than you for Ranger, but it was still too high, and it valued spellcasting far too low. I won't even bother with calculating the wizard.

This is more than a bit flawed. You would be better off using your own judgement rather than using this points system.

The class point system values prepared spellcasting with access to the full list much lower than it should, because there's no way the Wizard and Cleric should be the smallest-value classes.

While Illithid Savant does not care about being an Aberration, the Racial Emulation feat still cannot emulate an illithid because "illithid" is not a kind of humanoid. That was SorO's point.

I think its favourite colours in general. Speech colours have already been chosen, after all.
