Gaming Advice / Sendai battle (Baldur's Gate II campaign)
« on: February 26, 2018, 12:21:01 PM »
So my Baldur's Gate campaign has reached the point where the party is to fight Sendai.

Since the game gives her allies such as illithid, beholders, and an elemental prince, I decided that rather than have an 'enclave', she would take over a whole drow city, and have an actual army of monsters.

While the party tackled the other bhaalspawn, Viconia went on a scheming spree in Underdark, trying to rally multiple drow houses on a crusade against the heretic. I want the fight to be a massive battle like the ones in "Ways of the Wicked" campaign, with the party deciding the general outcome by handling several key encounters on the battlefield.

I'm looking for sub quests the party could go on, to gain an edge in the battle - things to reduce Sendai's forces, or increase their own.

So far, they have two assets: Viconia has used the "control spawn through controlling the parent" principle to amass a horde of shadows (which would anger the good guys in the party, so she hasn't told anyone yet) and Sarevok got himself polymorphed into a fire giant and managed to subjugate what was left of Yaga Shura's army.

Gaming Advice / chain dispel
« on: May 14, 2017, 02:38:40 PM »
How to protect yourself against chain dispel? Unlike greater dispel magic, it is too high level to be put in a dispelling ring. It is also MR-no, so spell immunity doesn't protect from it. Making sure to spread out might prevent it from wrecking the whole party, but beyond that, how can one protect against it?

1 If a str20 human warblade gets polymorphed into a fire giant, is he "close enough" for the change to be permanent?

2 Can he keep his own mental stats if his are better?

I've tried this game, and it seems cool, but how long does it last before it becomes repetitive? Has anyone played it for extended periods?

Gaming Advice / Elven city battle advice
« on: April 22, 2016, 07:40:59 AM »
I'm nearing one of the key scenes in my Baldur's Gate campaign, and the party has reached Suldanessalar at last.

The party breaks through the barrier surrounding the elven city, and finds it full of rampaging invaders of all kinds. The central tree of life has been taken by the BBEG, who has sealed it off, and is trying to subvert its powers (it serves as a faith conduit between the Seldarine and their followers in Fearun) to ur-priest himself into a god. Meanwhile, his minions are busy looting, hunting civillians and breaking the last pockets of defense.

To save the city, the party needs to gather three local relics in the temple at the base of the tree, to summon an avatar to protect the city - he will wipe out the invaders, and though the way the tree's magic is misdirected prevents him from going there, he can refresh the party and send them in against the BBEG.

Thanks to some sequence-breaking by the party, one of the relics has been secured for them already. That means they have three major combat encounters to get through:

1 The BBEG's dragon - busy hoarding valuables his minions are looting - it has one of the relics.
2 The leader of the BBEG's rakshasa allies - he's moving around the city with his hunting party, and has the final relic.
3 The BBEG's second in command is a powerful vampire who was supposed to have her own dungeon - but the party raided it two chapters early, killing her best minions while she was away for plot reasons. - so she's here. She will attack the party at the temple when they attempt to perform the ritual.

The rest of the enemies are invaders - drow, duergar, bladelings, with an odd demon or rakshasa.

Now, I expect the party druid to send an elemental swarm into the streets and then use some wild shape scouting to locate the mission objectives. But I don't want the adventure to just boil down to three combat encounters.

So what can I add to it to give the party some dialogue / decision making / strategy content beyond simple fighting?

Do you guys have any ideas?

Gaming Advice / Epic Klurichir
« on: April 17, 2016, 03:04:31 PM »
1 How exactly does a klurichir's attack routine look like? If you look at it, it has two jaws, four arms (one of which wields an axe) and those mandibles on his lower mouth.

The stat block lists 4 axe attacks and 2 pincers (I assume these are the mandible thingies) and the description mentions a bite attack, which is not statted anywhere. So how does it look like?

My current assumption is
- the mouths don't attack.
- klurichir swings his axe for four attacks, and snaps his mandibles for two - plus one extra attack against whoever he's holding (he uses his lower arms to grapple whoever gets swiped by his mandibles) - only this extra attack benefits from vorpal hit on 18+

2 the more important question: If a klurichir's HD improve into epic, does it increase any of the following?
- the caster level for his SLA (default 20 at 20HD)
- spell resistance
- spellcasting ability (default level 10 at 20 HD)

Gaming Advice / How does a drow high priestess protect herself?
« on: January 18, 2016, 12:33:35 PM »
Long story short, the party is planning to disrupt an important magical ritual - which they have been tasked with protecting.

The high priestess suspects treachery, but due to meddling by third party her divinations have been vague.

What can she do to protect hersself from being rocket-tagged while busy with casting the ritual?

Access to 9th level spells and level-appropriate gear.

Gaming Advice / Equipping psionic illithids
« on: January 06, 2016, 12:09:59 PM »
A psionic illithid has some innate psion levels, and if he takes extra levels of psion, these add up.

An ordinary psionic illithid would just have treasures as per his CR

what about a psionic illithid with class levels? Should he get NPC equipment just for the "adventurer HD" he has, or for his total psion level?

"This belt of giant strength is perfect for me, everything a paladin might need to do his duties... except for the 'five-heads-of-Tiamat" buckle. It has to go."

So, short of polymorph any object, is there a way to permanently alter an appearance of a magic item without destroing its enchantments?

Gaming Advice / more on shapechange
« on: November 26, 2015, 03:24:27 AM »
Does shapechange allow templates?

If not (so you can't change into a ghost, for example) then what shape could I take that makes me incorporal (to protect against implosion) while letting me still cast spells?

Just making sure, because I'm 95% sure the answer is "no"

If an outsider has some equipment "built in" as part of their default form, such as a balor's lightning sword, does it show up if you shapechange into it?

Gaming Advice / Nobody expects the drow inquisition
« on: November 04, 2015, 09:53:13 PM »
The party is infiltrating a drow city (polymorphed into drow) They got roped into a sub quest - apparently one of the members of one of the lesser houses turned out to be a cultist of the god of slimes.

Sadly, he had a mark on him that melted him alive the moment he failed his master by getting captured. His former companions are now investigating his possible connections.

But the news has already reached the church of Lolth and the priestesses have declared a slime cultist hunting season. The party represents their "current" house as an investigation team. So, what could they do to find the cult before the drow do?

It is known that the cultists would use living sacrifices - but in a drow city mysterious disappearances are too common to easily be tracked. The closest connections of the guy are already being investigated by his house. SO what else could the party latch on?

Gaming Advice / Idea for a VtM campaign plotline needed.
« on: October 20, 2015, 11:23:36 PM »
So, it looks like I'll be starting an old World of Darkness vampire campaign. The problem is, the person I usually go to for plot ideas will be one of the players. So I need someone else to brainstorm it with. I have a general idea for the game area, but lack the binding idea that would bind the plot.

LOCATION

The Polish city of Lodz, once a melting pot of Polish, Russian, German and Jewish cultures, famous as "the promised land" for daring businessmen, as it grew into a center of textile industry.

Nowadays the factories are mostly gone, the largest one converted into a giant shopping mall, but the mansions of the industry moguls still stand, serving as museums or administrative buildings. While many speak of the city's decline, others still enjoy its pubs, cinemas and picturesque old houses. The architecture ranges from old tenement houses to long blocks of flats from the times of communism, and the modern facilities of glass and metal stand just blocks away from dilapidated backyards where one would not go at night.

VAMPIRE SOCIETY - key clans

Brujah - the current Prince is a female noble from the 16th century, known both from her cunning and from her tendency to manhandle and defenstrate those who make her lose her temper. She's the second oldest vampire in the city (the oldest being the Gangrel primogen. She feels threatened by his power, but he mostly doesn't care)  Her children and grandchildren are either nobles from the decline of Poland, or various resistance members from the partitioning times, while the youngest brujah have been carefully selected from the local organized crime.

Ventrue - there are two big power players in the Ventrue. One is the primogen, Boguslav. He is an infamous historical figure who once betrayed Poland during the Swedish invasion, an act that made him the villain of one of Poland's most famous novels, and made him the local 'evil aristocrat' archetype. He definitely plays the part, though he lacks the manpower to shift the power directly - he has lost most of his first children so most of his progeny is less than 200 years old. His favourite daughter used to be a textile factory worker who gain a level of influence through her cunning, despite low education. Most modern ventrue are recruited from big business, as it the current trend.

Boguslav used to be a duke in life, which is the same as 'prince' in Polish, but he can't use the title for obvious reason, a fact that frustrates him to no end.

The other power player is the Marquis, a mysterious French ventrue, who, upon arriving in Lodz discovered that several houses in the city center are covered by surprisingly powerful wards, left there by the previous owner - He set up a night club there and, thanks to its added safety, managed to get the Prince to declare it the new elisium, taking the position away from the Toreador.

Nosferatu - a mix of old Jews and Russians, the nosferatu rule much of the old town in the city centre, even though the city doesn't have much in a way of impressive sewers, barring the oldest part that is now a museum. Their influence comes chiefly from the primogen's son holding the position of the Sheriff.

RECENT EVENTS

The Great dig - The city center is undergoing major changes, split in half by road works as the main road is being modified and partially moved underground to reduce the traffic jams at key intersections. On the other side of the centre, the old train station has been demolished and a new, much larger one is being constructed - it is said that it will be connected underground to the other train station across the city, but this will require years of digging tunnels under the old town. For this reason the investment is closely monitored by the nosferatu, who intend to use it to make some changes to their own network.

PLAYERS

1 Nosferatu. A 50 year old expert from the historical buildings preservation office, who discovered some nosferatu tunnels while overseeing the plans for the dig. She was embraced rather than killed because one of the nosferatu was her old university professor. Right now she's officially alive, but unable to leave home due to some severe mental condition, allowing her to sign whatever papers her new bos needs, while not showing her face to her old colleagues. Her big problem is that she has little usefulness to the nosferatu beyond that - she is going to have to learn fast.

2 Malkavian. A psychiatry student embraced by one of the kindred in the local hospital. She is a great observer and very persuasive, but also a compulsive liar.

PLOT?

Obviously something about the dig, but what will it be? Possibly some betrayal by Boguslav at some point - though he has to be careful since literally everybody expects him to try a coup sooner or later. Some organized crime or business-related plots?

No big conflicts with the local werewolves (that would interfere with our other campaign too early) but it would be fun to make them cooperate with Black Spirals for a quest or two.

Gaming Advice / How to make Kuo-Toa scary?
« on: October 20, 2015, 10:58:58 AM »
Kuo-Toa are creepy, underground fishmen, almost lovecraftian if done right. Problem is, they aren't exactly a high level encounter.

Short of making them a city big enough to justify high level leaders, what can I do to make them more dangerous?
