Chapter 2: Cuts Marked in the March of Men
« on: September 29, 2013, 10:22:09 PM »
As you exit La Maison Soulombre the cold air soaks into your being. The Mist clinging to the ground tugs at your ankles. As if welcoming you back to the outside world.
Even though its morning not much light penetrates the Mist. What ever does then has to contend with the ancient monolithic structures littering the area. This section of the city is barren, the silence is like nothing found anywhere in nature except on the highest mountain tops.
The menacing illusions placed by Snorri patrol back and forth between the nearest structures. The path leading away from the haunt is a patchwork of giant stones that have toppled from the high structures. It twists and turns and is somewhat hard to navigate.

Gevyen draws in a deep breath. As he exhales he looks amused by the cloud his hot breath creates in the cool air. Well.. the plan is to travel from Richemulot into the South East domain of Borca. Then continue on into Barovia from there. It will take quite awhile I imagine. We could stick to the road and head through the next two towns.. or travel through the woods. But that could be scary.. Also a potential is to take a boat and head down river.. What do you guys think?

"I am content to travel through the woods.  The woods in this realm are fairly safe, though some animals may be tainted," Zulketev says, eying the gnome's reaction.  "Though when we cross through Borca, I agree that passage by boat or road will be safer.  The forests of that realm are dark, and foraging for food could be hazardous."

"I am certainly content onboard a ship. All those years spent as a pirate might come in handy... but I also trust Zulketev to keep us safe in the forest, or at least to know which ones we won't be safe in."

Mercutio has once again adjusted his disguise to make his wings look like a great, dark cloak upon his back, and he hums a jaunty tune that seems totally out of place in the desolation surrounding him.

In a low, but friendly voice Riek asks Zulketev, Are you sure the woods are safe, Zulketev? Common knowledge says sticking to the roads are always better. I don't doubt your skill, but this place is always surprising us.

In the same tone, Riek addresses Zero, I think that's a good idea. But, if you're going to do it, please don't go too far ahead. And try to maintain constant contact too.

"In many Domains that is true," Zulketev says in answer to Riek's questions.  "But Richemulot is tamer than most, at least in the ways that you mean."

As much as I would love the opportunity to stretch my legs, I think that getting out of here quickly is more important, especially in light of Mercutio's unexpected contact.  We should strive to be out of Richemulot before our enemies realize what we're planning.

My vote is for the boat.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

"Alphonse does have a good point about the speed of travel," Zulketev said with a thoughtful tone.  "Perhaps starting the journey by ship would be for the best.  Of course, the main routes of travel would be the easiest for Jacqueline Renier to have watched..."

True, Zulketev.  But does she know who she should be looking for?

((How well-traveled are the waterways in Richemulot?  Could we blend in with the crowd?  Given Pont-a-Museau's description as a "vital port" city, I'd be inclined to say it would be pretty easy, but I figured I'd make sure))

Mercutio shrugs and says "I'm not sure what she knows, other than someone was snooping around in her little communication network. Speaking of which... we didn't bring those skull trinkets did we? Those need to stay behind... somewhere in the city, but not in our headquarters. How about we just toss them down here, if someone has them?"

Oh! I have it.. Gevyen says as he pulls out the odd little skull. I guess we probably should toss it. He says as he hands the skulls to Mercutio.
There is a lot of trading done by boat here.. so it should be pretty easy to charter a ride out of Richemulot. Though.. Jacqueline probably does have most of her men where the money comes in I would imagine. He shrugs. So... should we head into port then?
As the little gnome finishes his sentence he has already begun hoping along the giant stones forming the path. It should only be an hour or so to get there. After a few jumps between boulders he stops to look back. He wipes his brow and says. Phew.. too bad we don't have something to fly on huh?

"What reason do we have to keep them? I can think of several reasons to get rid of them... most of which involve me getting stabbed." Mercutio says as he tosses one of the skulls in the air and stares at it thoughtfully.

"Thank you, Riek. I'll just put them over here under this pile of rubble. If we ever manage to come back here, and want them, they might even still be there. Who knows?"

(Mercutio puts them under a distinctive looking pile of rubble. He doesn't really care if the group ever finds them again or not, really, though...)

Thats probably best...  Gevyen says while nodding along. Last thing we need is one of those things to turn us into some filthy were-rat or something. Hahaha

The little Gnome leads your party through Pont-a-Museau as if he had grown up there. He takes you from the high rising ancient monoliths down through the natural valleys that the Megacity was built on. Not even the Darklord knows who the original architects were. The strange city simply appeared in the mist one day, and people began to inhabit it. Even now.. a sparse 1/3rd of the city is populated. Most of this being around what has become the Market.

After time, well more than the hour that Gevyen had predicted, your party enters the main area of the city. Ok.. we will have to move through the market to reach the riverside dock. Oh,.. and umm. So you know.. Jacqueline's keep is on the otherside of the river. So lets keep a low profile shall we?

The Market is truely a spectacular sight. It staggers the mind to think how it was built. Its hustle and bustle is something you've only seen in the worlds you hail from. There seems to be traders from all the surrounding Domains here. The market guards slowly shuffle about with little to do. Though you have never been here, you know that thanks to the Darklords strict rule there is very little crime. Even the streets seem to have been kept free from trash and rubble. Apparently Jacqueline has an eye for neatness.

Looking at a copy of some maps he'd procured, Mercutio says "Doesn't this river connect with the Luna, which goes all the way through Borca and into Barovia? Why can't we just take a boat instead of going through the mountains? Or am I reading this wrong?"

Well travelling into the mountains was convenient because of a ancient library up there. We might find out more info on what exactly some of these relics are. Snorri did give us a year. Its also a bit more low key.. nearly all of the trade out of Barovia is gypsie traffic. Not many boats are willing to travel into the area. Rumors are it can be quite hard to get out without a gypsie guide. Gevyen pauses for a second before continuing.  ...... Thats why Valrin was important. He was Half-Vistani. We were counting on some gypsie connections from him. The gnome shrugs. Oh well. I'm sure we will do fine on our own,... the docks on the otherside of the market. He points off to the far corner. Which looks to be a good mile away.

While the gnome stands in silence and you all look out into the market many things catch your eye. Among the many many shops and tent stands. You see a large caravan pulling into the far end of the market. Next to what looks like a wooden Arena. You see a large tent with a sign that says 'Freakshow". Of course all the normal things are here as well.
Although you do see one particular part of the market that appears to be all Vistani shops and caravans. The gypsie's flamboyant colors are easy to spot.
