Way to Get Spellcaster Always Behind Cover?
« on: July 24, 2019, 12:54:07 AM »
So, if you are behind cover, you don't provoke attacks of opportunity for ranged attacks within melee range.  Is there an easy way for a spellcaster to always be "behind cover" ?

Magic of faerun has a 7th lvl cleric spell called holy star that has 3 different modes of use, with the 2nd one being granting +10 cover bonus to ac without affecting your actions like a tower shirld would.

Does it actually give you cover, or just the AC bonus that cover would?

It is explicitly defined as a covertype of bonus. Cover is cover.

I managed to find the actual text of the Holy Star spell online.

Quote
Cover: The holy star gives you a +10 cover bonus to AC without affecting your actions.

It's explicitly just an AC bonus. It doesn't give you cover as a whole nor the other benefits of cover (such as the bonus on Reflex saves, no AoOs, etc.). It's just an AC bonus that (presumably) doesn't stack with cover. Also, it looks like the spell was reprinted in Spell Compendium. Among other things, the AC version of the spell got transformed into a +6 circumstance bonus to AC.

A portable hole, a tower shield and a butler walk into a dungeon.
