Play By Post / Ancient Greek Monster Hunting Idea Thing
« on: May 30, 2013, 04:25:11 PM »
Uh... not my fault, honest.

Anyway, due to an onrunning series of complaints about how WotC underpowered nigh on everything in Greek mythology, it's come to the point where... well, why not buff the monsters to where they should be? The Hydra as a poisonous, land-wasting monstrosity, the Nemean Lion as this... indestructible shapechanging thing, Stymphalian Birds as a storm of feathers. Medusa... um... probably more dangerous because of her sisters, honestly. Probably the Hecatoncheires and Titans making an appearance at some point...

And, to cap it all off, Typhon. Father of all monsters. Fought Zeus. Buried under a mountain.

... seems like something that'd need to be high level out of necessity. Err, this probably wasn't what was meant. Oh well. XD

... no chance of my running it, though. No experience.

So, in what's probably a half-messed up recollection of Summon Night: Swordcraft Story, Artificer as a class, and something someone said in a D&D Next discussion, this came to mind.

Normally, if adventurers are adventuring for treasure, it seems to be because either the treasure itself is valuable (and therefore can be sold!) or can be used by the adventurers. But what if the 'treasure' was basically a lump of 'worthless rocks'? Well, not worthless--actually quite valuable--but useless to someone without the means to make it into something worthwhile.

Basically, adventurers get employed by craftsman's guilds to go out and find the materials that actually make magic items work. Normal stuff just won't hold a charge. So out the adventurers toddle, finding whatever material it is, generally guarded by either people that live there, or monsters that have some attraction to the environment it's found in, and go back for payment. Enough gold to get by for a limited time... and some items, made with said materials. Yes, there's magic item shops, but they're generally out of their price range.

Crafting in any sort of campaign would probably have to be extremely limited, otherwise the whole thing sort of ends like this:  :psyduck

Anyway, I don't really have the dedication or skill to make use of any such idea, and I don't want to just keep it in my head forever. ... also, any resemblance to anything is unintentional.

Off Topic Fun / Religion =/= Delusion
« on: May 10, 2013, 06:06:36 PM »
Carried over from the politics thread.

'Delusions are bizarre' is also barely ever diagnosed consistently. Study by Moftabi and Nicholson (1995): 0.4 correlation between senior psychiatrists.

However, do you want to know the main reason why religions are not classified as delusions? There is a basis for them. The population is not just believing it for no reason. Now, if they were to come up with something like the Garden of Eden as a belief, entirely out of whole cloth, without having any reason to believe it (and yes, societal pressure is a reason, as is being taught it--much like children and basic science, it gets taken on faith) then it would be a delusion. To say that half the world population is delusional because religions are weird stretches the definition to breaking point.

Religions can be used for societal control and can give birth to delusions, but they are not delusions in and of themselves. If religions were actually delusions, the diagnostic criteria would hold no meaning, which is bad for the people that actually need help.

Off Topic Fun / Horribly Off-Target Magnetism
« on: April 23, 2013, 07:06:33 AM »
So, the values I calculated for the strength of an electromagnet were around the order of B = 7.5I up to B = 25I. The measured value? About B = 0.0005I.

So, I went extremely wrong somewhere.

The question is, where? The only two sources I can identify are if the wire itself shorted out, and the coil not extending to the end of the magnet. But would that really cut things down by four full orders of magniturde?  :huh

And has anyone else ever experienced anything else as extremely out of place?  :lmao

Min/Max 3.x / 3.5 Sacred Vow Bard
« on: April 07, 2013, 04:05:26 PM »
So... yeah, I'm trying to work out a 20 level progression for a bard taking the nonviolence/peace/poverty Vows (Obedience, Abstinence, and Chastity just don't fit with my concept of a bard, Purity is optional), but I kind of run out of ideas post level 6 (I'm also not familiar with the Bard spell list). It's not actually for use in anything (mostly because I have nothing to use it in, partly because I don't think most DM's would be overly pleased by the idea), so the following assumptions are in place:
And now, a few preferences:
  • As playable as this is ever going to get.
  • I would prefer to avoid LA and template jiggery-pokery as much as possible
  • No multiclassing.
So, this is what I've got so far:

Human Bard 6, Chaotic Good

Gaming Advice / Spectral Hand Movement
« on: March 19, 2013, 08:40:55 AM »
I'm not sure if I'm reading this right: does it effectively teleport from you, to your target, back to you? Would it provoke an AoO from someone you're trying to use it on? What about when it returns to your position? And how the hell does the thing actually move about? It can apparently go beyond the spell range and automatically returns to you if it does... but it can't flank. Honestly, how does this thing work?  :huh

Min/Max 3.x / Sorcerer Spell Selection?
« on: March 17, 2013, 12:02:49 PM »
Focusing on setting things on fire, here.

Right, with that out of the way: 7th level sorcerer. Have absolutely no idea for cantrips, and I'm a bit uncertain with 2nd and 3rd level spells, but I've got a pretty good idea for 1st level stuff.

Human, so 4 feats at first level. Anyway: Searing Spell, Energy Substitution, Versatile Spellcaster, and Ocular Spell down the line. That's two more to go.

Spells selected:
1st Level: True Strike, Lesser Orb of Sound, Magic Missile (bloody ghosts--should probably change this around once I can get Orb of Force).
2nd Level: Combustion. I think I'm in love with this one.

Anyway, I don't know very many spells beyond about half the core ones, and I have the spell compendium handy, so I'm a bit overwhelmed with trying to work out what to pick. @_@

Additionally, using this. Since I'm bad at simple things, I have no idea how to transfer it over or what. :blush

Gaming Advice / Thunderlance, Large Size, and Reach
« on: March 07, 2013, 05:24:41 AM »
Basically, Thunderlance threatens everything within 20', and Large size gives you a natural reach of 10', so would the 20' natural foot reach the spell states be the maximum? Or would it add on another 5' for the increase in reach from Medium to Large?

Gaming Advice / Weapon Choices

So... thinking of making one of these, but I have no idea what two (martial) weapons I should pick.

Advice?

Gaming Advice / Why are there so many Exotic Weapons?
« on: March 02, 2013, 01:22:33 PM »
Going through Captnq's weapon handbook, I'm stunned by the sheer amount of exotic weapons. It's about 5 or 6 of them to one simple or martial weapon. What, exactly, is responsible for this?  :huh

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Names Needed for Alignment Changes
« on: February 21, 2013, 04:37:22 PM »
Now, I know alignment is a thorny subject--it assigns static moral values to actions and motivations, firmly declaring them off-limits for various reasons (can't easily have a short-tempered cleric of a good god, and the servant of an evil one would probably end up screwing themselves over if they were nice to children), which is why I think I have found a new favourite page for quantifying such things. The only question is: how could you change alignment spells to adapt?

Having read more closely, it's possible to split the alignments into the same four general groups, it just needs catchier naming.

So, the four groups and their components:

Self-Transcendence: Righteous, Humane, Transcendent
Self-Enhancement: Ambitious, Ascendant, Sybaritic (though Hedonistic sounds less alarming for the last one and is its major component, so...)
Conservation: Righteous, Orthodox, Ascendant
Openness to Change: Transcendent, Autonomous, Sybaritic

'Pragmatic' is TN. I suppose it's because your motivation is just doing the most sensible thing?

Gaming Advice / Ridiculous question about HD

Do children have HD? In fact, do adventurers who've yet to complete sufficient training to, well, have a class level have HD? :O

Off Topic Fun / Level Equivalencies for Servants
« on: February 01, 2013, 12:02:27 PM »
Basically, for some time I've been trying to work out around what level Servants would fall in a D&D setting. Now, given that 5th level is normal human maximum and every last Servant is literally beyond that, it's certain that they're above level 5. The three highest-end abilities are 'destroy world by breaking reality, minimal power expenditure', 'complete invulnerability and perfect regeneration', and 'summon seemingly boundless army of Servants'. Two of those are tied to weapons, yes, but since they're literally unusable by anyone else they seem like they'd fall under the abilities section.

Now, the problem is that, aside from knowing the upper level cap they could be is 'very high', I'm... kind of lost on actually filling things in.  :-\

Now, starting with the 'base' 9, from Fate/Stay Night, I think I've got a rough idea of raw ability (assuming no-one's holding back or hampered in any way):

So... does anyone have any ideas?

Notably, this entire thing has been banging around in my head because I was trying to work out what would happen if someone with Gilgamesh's abilities decided to conquer the Forgotten Realms pre 4e. XD

Well, umm, hi. I'm... absolutely, appallingly bad at introductions, and I'm pretty much here because a friend linked me to a thread on the Rule of Cool forums and I joined that so I kind of need to join here in case it's moved back. XD

Also, I'm the person running the game that the person who posted on this forum before me joined.

So, yeah, hi.
