Hello all,

What's up? I haven't been online for years now, any news you'd like to share with me?

Best regards,

Min/Max 3.x / Planning on reworking the paladin handbook
« on: October 21, 2016, 06:10:28 AM »
I am planning on reworking the paladin handbook. I believe that we know the state of D&D 3.5e as a whole, so I am in a much better position to create a guide that won't need to be updated whenever a new sourcebook is released.

The new information that I am going to introduce to the guide is a more thorough breakdown of the paladin class. I'm planning on having the following arbitrary aspects:

The champion is the warrior aspect; a champion paladin tries to optimize his main combat skill, smite evil, in order to deal high amounts of damage.
The cavalier is the horseman; a cavalier paladin improves his performance in combat by focusing on the synergy between him and the special mount.
The templar is the aspect with the most connection to the divine. A templar paladin uses spells. turn undead, [domain] and [divine] feats to increase his combat prowess.
The lord is the leader of the group. A lord paladin supports his followers by applying buffs and acting as the party face with his skills.
This way a player can focus on the aspect(s) that he prefers and maximize it.

Do you find this class breakdown useful?
Would you change any of the names to something more fitting?
Would you like it if the combinations (e.g. lord-cavalier or templar-champion) had distinct names and description?
Are there any other aspects that I am missing?
Would you move an ability to a different aspect? (e.g. skills to the templar)

Thank you in advance, Dimitris

Min/Max 3.x / Creating a druid handbook, need your input on a template
« on: September 28, 2015, 08:47:58 AM »
So I have created a page that enables you to sort the forms that you can acquire using wild shape based on different attributes.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20183245/site/druid/animal.html

What you see

A list of all available wild shape forms (it's incomplete - but it's useful for this testing phase). I've built an sqlite database that contains the forms and turns them into html boxes.

Each of those boxes represents a form. A form has a list of all those abilities and a total score, which is calculated based on the abilities that the form has.

Code: [Select]
score = size + speed + special + rating + attacks + str + dex + con + natural armor

size = (1 if diminutive ... 7 if gargantuan)
speed = (total ft * weight, weight = 0.9 if swim, 1.1 if burrow, 1.2 if fly, 1 otherwise)
special = 1 per special ability

Because the result of speed is somewhere in the hundreds and natural armor rarely is higher than 10, all scores are normalized before they are added to the total score, according to the popular formula:

Code: [Select]
normalized = (value - min)/(max - min)
Initially, the forms are ordered by total score.

Additionally, the set [min score, max score] is broken up into four segments; the items that belong to each segment are then assigned a color code - red, black, blue and navy (the color coding that I traditionally use).

What you can do

1. Filter forms according to their color or book. These can be combined - you may want to select only those forms that fall into the blue category from MMII for instance; to do this you just click on a blue header and then click on the 'monster manual II' book (or in reverse order - that works, too).
2. Reset a specific filter. If you want to see all the available options from monster manual II, regardless of their color code, you'll have to reset the color filter. To do this just control + click on the blue header. The same works for books.
3. Ban. If you shift + click on a color or a book then the boxes that belong to that category will be hidden. There is no reset for this kind of filter unless you refresh the page. This is useful if your DM bans a specific book, but doesn't make much sense for colors.
4. Change the order of the forms. Just click on an attribute and the forms will be automatically sorted based on that attribute. You can combine orders - e.g. order them first by speed and then by natural armor. The active order will color the appropriate attribute(s) with a grey background, so that you know which ordering is currently active.
5. Vote for a specific form by pressing the tick symbol on the top left of the box. Your vote will be kept and it will mildly influence the rating of a specific form. If the vote was successfully taken, then the tick sign will change color to black.

What I want input on

1. Is this thing useful? I'm planning to extend this to animal companions, summons and spells.
2. If anyone has problems using the page with his browser, please notify me.
3. I'm not much of a designer - do you find the design attractive? Anything that could be improved?

Finally, if anyone could help me out with data entry, as it's a slow and painful process (and my free time is limited), please send me a message.

It's not yet complete (I'm missing stuff like tables), but the layout is pretty accurate.

Off Topic Fun / Looking for whitewolf (oWoD) and d&d 3.5e books in europe
« on: September 13, 2014, 09:48:58 AM »
So, now that 5th edition is out, I decided to expand my book selection a bit.

Does anyone know any bookstore in Europe that sells rpg books? (even if they're second hand, I don't really mind) I've found a few ones online, but they're mostly located in the USA, which means that the cost to transport the books is too damn high for me.

[Microscope/D&D 3.5] Adventure Workshop / [Reboot] Bookend History
« on: May 16, 2014, 07:36:02 AM »
Now we need to create the starting and ending periods, defining the borders of our timeline.

In addition we need to define each period as "light" or "dark".

We can discuss and exchange ideas about the starting and ending periods, but please, if you've got a great idea about another aspect of the game, don't share! Keep it to yourself!

[Microscope/D&D 3.5] Adventure Workshop / [Reboot] The Big Picture

Mankind leaves the sick Earth behind and spreads out to the stars.

The current topic is "the big picture". We need to brainstorm and pick something big that will define our "world" within one or two short sentences, like the previous quotes.

Post away!

P.S. The most important rule is: don't share your ideas with other players! Let's take it step by step.

The Palette is a list of things the players agree to reserve the right to include or, conversely, outright ban. It gets everyone on the same page about what belongs in the history and what doesn’t.

Each player can add one thing, either a Yes or No. Add something to the Yes column if you think the other players would not expect it to be in the history, but you want to be able to include it. Add something to the No column if you think the other players would expect it to be in the history, but you don’t want it included.

I'll add a "no".

Yes:

Play By Post / Creating a d&d world from the start! [Microscope]
« on: April 21, 2014, 03:18:05 PM »
This is an attempt to reboot the attempt that we've started a couple of years ago. The idea is to use the microscope rpg to create our own campaign world for d&d.

If everything goes well, we could go further and flesh out a whole campaign (using the game's rules) and transform it in a ready-to-play adventure for other people.

Anyone interested?

Game Design / Converting Vampire: the Masquerade to a different system?
« on: January 02, 2014, 10:01:05 AM »
I've played a fair share of V:tM and I quite like the theme/backstory of the game. However, I don't like the system that much and my party agrees on that, especially on the rolling mechanism with successes and botches. This has led us to play mostly diceless, with the DM enforcing rolls when something is extremely out of the ordinary or he wants to create random effects or it's something critical to the story, like leading to the death of a central character.

Is there any rpg system that fits the 'rules light, story-driven' that V:tM could be converted to in order to fit our needs, but still have some kind of support for backgrounds, morality and disciplines?

Min/Max 3.x / Updated Fighter's Handbook [Beta? :P]
« on: December 13, 2013, 04:51:41 PM »
OK, so, I've been working a little bit on updating the handbooks and I chose to start with the fighter one.

You can find the guide here and I would appreciate comments on anything that strikes you as interesting/wrong.

Note #1: You need to use a browser that you've used to log into gmail previously;  otherwise you won't see quite a bit of the content, because it draws a lot of stuff from google spreadsheets. This is just for easy testing/development and not a permanent thing.
Note #2: This is by no means complete; I'm working on it really slowly, but thankfully I've got some steady progress. Hopefully, by sharing it I'm going to push myself to finish it.

Min/Max 3.x / I just rebuilt critter database in SQLite
« on: November 21, 2013, 06:08:14 PM »
Code: [Select]
sqlite> select distinct sourcebook from dndcritters;
SRD
Fiend Folio
Monster Manual 3
Libris Mortis
StormWrack
Monster Manual
SandStorm
FrostBurn
Monster Manual 2
Monster Manual 4

Code: [Select]
sqlite> select count(*) from dndcritters;
1470

I'm now working with html5sql.js to make it run client-side, in order to be accessible to all, without needing a host.

Anyone that interested in statistics, just let me know and I'll run some queries to retrieve them.
Anyone's interested in populating the database with creatures from other books?

Min/Max 3.x / [d&d statistics] Fighter feats!
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:23:35 PM »
Sorry for the thread spam!

I figured that it will be easier to collect data using google docs rather than collecting them by hand. Please visit the following link:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/14evDT6coDA-DM4bG31Evn2BioFfBRvEc7QUMTLic51o/viewform

and enter the fighter feat that you consider to be the best.

The unique identifier is there in order to filter out your old choices. Once the spreadsheet fills up with enough responses, I'll post a chart :D

Min/Max 3.x / [Fighter's Handbook Updating] Top-tier feats!
« on: August 16, 2013, 11:51:46 AM »
So far my list is:

Power Attack
Combat Reflexes
Karmic Strike
Robilar's Gambit
Standstill
EWP(Spiked Chain)
Improved Trip
Knockback
Boomerang Daze
Woodland Archer
Combat Brute
Shock Trooper
High Sword Low Axe
Defensive Sweep
Battle Jump

18
I've got a sort list of them. It seems that it's really difficult to find a prestige class that gives you full BAB and has good abilities.

Offensive: War Shaper (changeling), Warforged Juggernaut, Master Thrower, Hellreaver, War Mind (psionics & sweeping strike), Cragtop Archer.

Special: Kensai (enchanting weapons), Jaunter (early entry and good for moving on battlefield or even plane hoping), Dragon Devotee (sorcerer casting + fighter feats + template), Menacing Brute (their search is awesome if you're using poison), Orc Warlord (Leadership + inspire courage), Horizon Walker (probably the only good core option), Warrior Skald (inspire courage), Vengeance Knight (if you're planning on using shields).

Defensive: Occult Slayer, Witch Slayer

Gishing it: Suel Arcanamach, Abjurant Champion, Dragonslayer, Spellsword.

I'm very tempted to suggest Abjurant Champion as one of the best prestige classes for a fighter, with a minimal arcane (or divine, if that's allowed) dip.

For instance, consider the build stub:

Fighter 6/Martial Focused Conjurer or Transmuter or Diviner or Abjurer 1/Abjurant Champion 5
BAB 11/12
CL 11 (6 effective level)
5 fighter bonus feats (out of 7) (You need to spend one feat for Combat Casting unfortunately)

You now have some important utility spells and self-buffs, e.g. enlarge person, nerveskitter, fist of stone, shield, mirror image, wraithstrike, haste, master's touch, blood wind, whirling blade, bite of X, animalistic power, magic circle against X, protection against X, displacement, phantom steed and many more.

If you want to play a mounted character, you can get Improved Familiar for a Hippogriff.

The best part is that a single level of sorcerer or wizard and then five levels of abjurant champion, is all that you need in order to enable a lot of utility without hurting your build. Obviously you can continue acquiring gish prestige classes that also grant feats (2-3 Spellsword, 2 Eldritch Knight), but that isn't necessary.

Yes, spellcasting > fighter, but remember that this is a handbook about fighters.

Min/Max 3.x / [CO Discussion] Tank Archetype
« on: July 22, 2013, 04:10:56 AM »
There are many things people say when discussing optimized builds (generally, not necessarily about D&D); however, the thing that bugs me the most is calling their build a "tank".

Most people, when saying that they're a 'tank', they mean that they have lots of defenses, with a focus on hit points and armor class; this is what I call a passive tank and assuming that the enemies have half a brain (or the DM doesn't make intelligent enemies stupid on purpose), they are actually bad for their team, because the monsters will just go and eliminate his allies, ignoring the passive tank.

An obvious improvement to the passive tank is having abilities that enable him to get enemies to attack him; abilities such as 'Goad', the tripping maneuver, 'Standstill', or abilities that enhance your attacks of opportunity by giving the additional provocation conditions, are all ways to transform the passive tank to an active tank.  However, while active tanks are not a liability to your team per se, they are many situations that they are simply not optimal.

My position is this: there's no 'tank' archetype, just because, all members of the party must do everything in their power in order to improve their defenses, i.e. be 'tanks'. This is the reason why constitution is so important and some people despise races that lose con, such as most elves. Having a single party member with awesome AC & hit points, doesn't mean that all other members are covered.

P.S. Even though this isn't true for most builds (e.g. Crusaders are the most notable out-of-can exception), 'tanks' do not focus on damage output. Which is also a thing that bugs me even further - their namesakes usually feature high-caliber main guns, turrets and machine guns.

Discuss!

Min/Max 3.x / (semi-)migrating to google spreadsheets
« on: June 26, 2013, 05:03:18 AM »
So, a very good guy has made tabletop.js, which draws data from google spreadsheets. Then using javascript, an html page is generated dynamically, based on the data stored there.

The end result is this: http://dictummortuum.droppages.com/testing

The pages may end being a little slower, but it's still fast enough when I tested it.

The reason for doing such a thing is to have a clean html file in order to edit them easier. For example, the html file in the above page, without counting the javascript code, is this:

Code: [Select]
<div id="page-wrap">
<div class="info-col">

<p id="catpicker"><a href="#" id="allcat" class="curr">All</a> | <a href="#" id="red" class="filter">Bad</a> | <a href="#" id="black" class="filter">Average</a> | <a href="#" id="blue" class="filter">Good</a> | <a href="#" id="navy" class="filter">Perfect</a></p>

<p id="indexlinks"><a href="#general">General Feats</a> | <a href="#spellsgeneral">General Spell Feats</a> | <a href="#summoning">Summoning Feats</a> | <a href="#martial">Martial Study/Martial Stance</a></p>
<h1>Paladin Guide</h1>

<h3>Attributes</h3>
<dl id="attributes"></dl>
<h3>Races</h3>
<dl id="races"></dl>
<h3>Class Features</h3>
<dl id="classFeatures"></dl>
<h3>Alternative Class Features</h3>
<dl id="alternativeClassFeatures"></dl>
<h3>Feats</h3>
<dl id="feats"></dl>

</div>
</div>

Moreover, I'm planning to revive CubeKnight's critter database using google spreadsheets. It will be a LOT slower, since it will not be a regular database (unfortunately I can't host it anywhere), but it's better to have the functionality than not.

Tell me what you think :D
