5.5 edition announced

(at about 5 years is rather late historically speaking)
... although it's just hitting development now.

I like the changes Wizards proposes. Moving humans, elves, dwarves and halflings to later supplements, and instead presenting flumphs, flail snails, brain moles and cookie monsters as default races brings a breath of fresh air.

I also like how monks will return to 1E damage scaling, with 4d10 punches at level 20.

Ah I didn't get that, but it looks like they're distancing themselves from the Tolkien roots, perhaps because of the Middle Earth 5e game put out not by them.

Did WotC actually do an April Fools joke this year? I remember gems like the Avenger or banning basic lands from Magic in previous years.

Personally I would have used the existence of (supposedly!) monthly Unearthed Arcana to create something silly but usable like the Avenger. One that comes to mind is an Isekai background.

that the latest Artificer was the early April Fools thing

but the fact that they didn't ,

is perhaps the actual April Fools.
