race + feat for fly and burrow?
« on: May 20, 2012, 06:52:41 AM »
I'm looking for a +0LA race and or feat(s) that will give me decent fly and burrow speeds in e6.

Two flaws, class levels are already decided.  (Not a caster)

Anything come to mind?

A raptoran can fly for [constitution modifier] rounds in a row once they reach 5HD (and can double that length if they don't mind being fatigued afterwards).

Kobolds can do the same at 6HD with two feats (dragon wings at level 1 {can be level 3, if you're a dragonwrought kobold}, improved dragon wings at level 6)

Is homebrew allowed?

Burrow is the tough one.  Anthro badgers get a burrow speed, but have +3 LA.

That's what I was afraid of, this is for a DFA, I was thinking that if I could get burrow on a Raptoran or DW Kobold I would skip the Humanoid Shapes Invocation and take Voidsense for hit and run tactics above/below ground with Entangling Exhalation and Slow breath.

Thanks for the replies!

ya that might work with that speed boosting feat

will a 5 foot step allow me to burrow underground? (provided I have a burrow speed)

Well 5' steps explicitly state "...in any direction," so probably.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Not a race or class, but IIRC, there's an Illithid graft that gives you a burrow speed.

I can't believe no one has said Dragonborn of Bahamut yet. And at +1 LA (worth mentioning if +3 Anthropomorphic Badgers are) you could consider Mineral Warrior. They also have CON bonuses which synergize with DFA.
I appreciate the logical, cool-headed responses and the lack of profanity displayed by our community.

It's a bit tricky, as mineral warrior specifically makes you lose any flight ability, though. If you apply dragonborn after mineral warrior, I guess it could work, but it isn't LA +1. Burrow at LA +0 is the difficult part. It sounds like a hengyokai dragonborn might work, though.

Unseelie Fey can get you flight, but it's random. +0 LA too.

It sounds like a hengyokai dragonborn might work, though.

Badger hengeyokai only get the burrow speed in animal or hybrid form.  Dragonborn removes the alternate form ability.  I think human form is meant to be the base, so I think you'd be stuck with that for a dragonborn hengeyokai.

Badger hengeyokai can still be combined with the dragon wings feat.  Dragonfire adept gives you the dragonblood subtype, so you qualify.

Just take the humanoid shape invocation at 6th level as a Dragon Fire Adept. There are multiple humanoid races with fly or burrow speeds. Check the alterself handbook as I don't have a link handy. You aren't limited to +0 humanoid races with the invocation. Its any humanoid creature and since its not based on alter self, but rather the Change Shape special ability HD doesn't matter either.

In E6 use the warlock capstone Extra Invocation to take it as a feat. You may have to clear this with your DM as it was written for warlock but in any game I've been in its been allowed for the DFA as well.
