Elizabeth tells the lieutenants that we need to keep a lookout for any creatures or lone travelers. She checks with the prisoner.

"Will this thing attack us directly, or wait to capture more hunters?"

"It will come at you sideways, in some way you aren't expecting.  It will be at least as well versed in the sciences as you, and is far more physically powerful.  It won't be direct unless the rage has consumed it, but it can always make more children.  This one incident won't make it careless.  Trust no one.  Keep your eyes open, and let no one outside of the city alone.  Establish a curfew, and make sure no night watchman is alone at his post.  Do you know any of the science of perception?"

"Just Open Door. Is there something else I should learn?"

Elizabeth sets up the curfew and paired watches and explains why.

he looks stunned

"Perception is normally the first thing a Master teaches a student.  You will need to learn it quickly to survive."

OOC: is he referring to Detect? How specific do I have to be when I choose what it detects? Can it be eldritch creatures, or does it need to be more specific?

He is indeed.  You can be both general or specific, but I will need to finish the spells text.  Sorry about that, I thought I had it done.

edit: i has added some text to the spell to give you an idea

Elizabeth nods, and heads out of the jail. She again makes sure that people are moving about or taking their watches at least in pairs. She will go out with hunting groups to help keep things safe and look for any evidence of weird things moving about.

OOC: Elizabeth will make a note to learn that spell when she is able (i.e. when she gains a level). The ranks are purchased with skill points, right?

Also, did we ever get those cows back to town, or did we leave too late in the day for that?

yup but you'll need a copy of the spell, make a bargain with an entity or have someone who knows it teach it to you

which iis kind of what yr prisoner is hinting at

A week passes before people in town start showing up dead with their blood drained.

I have to gain a level to learn it though, right? Is the idea she could start "learning" it now, then actually gain access when she levels?

If so, she'll let him teach her.

What do you mean by "showing up"? Is part of the group bringing dead people back from hunting trips?

You can learn a spell any time, it's just to buy ranks in it after you need to level up and get skill points.  The prisoner would likely demand you take the Apprenticeship Flaw or set him free.

The bodies are murders in the night.  In each case that person was in a room alone and found dead.  No one was witnessed entering or leaving and no noise was heard.  Always at night.  The town is alive with rumors of vampires..

"We're still investigating, but it's safest to sleep in groups with at least one person keeping watch. We may have to tighten our perimeter in spots. It would be safest to burn the bodies after reading them their last rites."

To her lieutenants: "From what I can tell, it's effectively a large spider, that can lay it's eggs in people. It knows what many would refer to as 'magic'. I don't think it's a very straight-forward foe, and we cannot expect it to just show up and 'fight' us, some day. We're going to have to be smarter than it. I'm researching ways to find it while it is hiding."

Does she find him believable?

"So long as it's as a last resort, and we can keep such deals as quiet as possible. The townsfolk are slowly learning the truth of things, but I can't see that working out well for a population, generally speaking. I'll be back in a few minutes."

Elizabeth goes to confer with the lieutenants.

"I may have to release the prisoner. As much as I don't like the idea, he knows more about what we're dealing with, and he's more on our side than any man-eating, human-incubating spider monster.

I have to learn the ins and outs of detecting other-wordly creatures, so I can better find this thing as it enters our town."

"He eats animals.  We've all fed him live rats.  One of them bit him and he closed the wound.  He knows our names and some details of our personal lives he shouldn't."
