D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Making magical items question
« on: February 29, 2020, 10:31:40 PM »
Nightsticks ---> 2 Nightsticks ---> 3 Nightsticks
only quibble, is multiple nightsticks was almost immediately considered to be bad form, because of multiple DMM Persists (and more).

One of the best quotes about nightsticks I've ever heard.
Player: "how many nightsticks can I stack?"
DM: "How many pencils can I put in your a$$?"

It's 3.0, but Arms & Equipment Guide has this line about Magic Items that Grant Feats "A general guideline for other kinds of feats is that they cost 10,000 gp, plus another 5,000 gp to 10,000 gp per prerequisite."

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: [3.5] True necromancer, new (fixed?) version.
« on: February 29, 2020, 09:47:19 PM »
About the spell progression of the "new" true necro? Basically, at first level the PRC says "+1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class/+1 level of existing divine spellcasting class", and the following 13 levels says "as above".

About the Yathrinshee. Lorewise it would be fitting... BUT the true necromancer PRC requires "Access to the Death domain."
And ironically, despite being a deity of undeath and vengeance, she just offers the domains of Chaos, Drow, Evil, Retribution, Undeath.

I think that adding her the Death Domain, too wouldn't be a great stretch, due to her portfolio, but RAW she doesn't offer the Death Domain, so no True Necromancer/Yathrinshee ^^'

In that adventure (I've only got this one) there are some noncore elements like the multiheaded template or some spells, but iirc they're the same as the source material:

Ogni significant change is the true necromancer change to the spell progression, but I'm glad to see this change. Imho it changed the prc from too underpowered to worthwhile.

The True Necromancer PRC has a great flavour, and winks at AD&D (a necromancer in AD&D needed high Wisdom, so many people biclassed cleric/necromancer).
Alas, the PRC is notoriously underpowered, due to the "too many caster levels lost".

I found in the Living Greyhawk adventure "CORS4-02 - here there be dragons" a variant of the PRC. It's basically the same from Libris Mortis, but with dual progression for all levels (like mystic theurge and arcane hierophant progression). With this variant (and of course an early entry into Mistic Theurge before going True Necromancer) is quite easy to create a "double 9" character.
For instance, thanks to Alternative Source Spell (Dragon #325) we can create something like Cloistered Cleric 1/Wizard 3/MT 2/TN 14, achieving the spell progression of a 17th level cleric and  a 19th level wizard.

Do you think that the "full dual progression" can fix the true necromancer, finally making that a worthwhile PRC?

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / [3.5] Delay death + Diehard.
« on: February 19, 2020, 09:17:14 AM »
I need a small clarification for an Ordained Champion of Hextor that will fight the PCs soon in my campaign.

The combo "delay death" from Spell Compendium and Diehard Feat allow a character to act as disabled until the spell ends, right? Of course, if at the end of the spell the NPC has -10 hp or less, it's instant death.

IIrc the disabled state allows for the "partial charge", right? I'm talking about "If you are able to take only a standard action or a move action on your turn, you can still charge, but you are only allowed to move up to your speed (instead of up to double your speed). You can’t use this option unless you are restricted to taking only a standard action or move action on your turn."

The character also has Faith Unswerving feat. Looking at the wording of the tactical option "one last strike" (you must be the subject of an attack, spell, or ability that reduces you to 0 or fewer hit points) it means that each round the NPC is at negative hps but disabled thanks to Diehard, if he's attacked it "triggers" the immediate action attack?

Ty in advance

Min/Max 3.x / Re: Core only build

I second a druid for "easy mode".

If you like to focus on summoning, you can simply pick Spell Focus (conjuration) & Augment Summoning, then when you hit 6th level Natural Spell and stay in Wild Shape.

AFAIK arch psion wasn't updated for 3.5, so he's got an high psionic that boost save DCs like 3.0 Acrhmage.

And luckilly for us it was called "greater psionic focus", since "power power" is quite dumb XD

However, after the Hierophant great CL boost, I'm tempted to try to stat an epic Ultimate Magus/Ur Priest/Eldritch Theurge and try to give him max casting class at least in both prepared & spontaneous arcane spellcasting classes, and divine class (quite easy since UP full its casting with only 10 levels) and CL = HD in all his spellcasting & invocation classes XD

8
Since Spiritual Lion Totem Barbarian gains pounce at level 1, I think that Dire Charge (also inferior to true pounce, since it works on the first round of combat) could be fine at non-epic.

Even feats like Improved Stunning Fist (+2 DC on stunning first) or Improved Death Attack are not too umbalanced in a non-epic game, imho.

9
Spell power says "This ability increases the archmage’s effective caster level by +1", so you're right. Theoretically a Wizard/Sorcerer/Warlock/Ur Priest*insert theurgic classes*/Archmage 1 would gain a +1CL for all his spellcasting classes XD

Hierophant's "spell power" ability, on the other hand, explicitely stack with itself (and even here it applies with all classes)... That could be very useful at epic levels.

Thank you for the advice.

Yes, Ur-Priest RKV makes Githyanki Knights SCARY. And for the skill requirements for UP and RKV, Keeper of the Forbidden Lore from FC2 helps a lot. A good start imho is Hexblade/Crusader (so those knights also have mettle).

For gishes we can give them arcane gishes and psionic gishes as well... Hell, the very term "gish" came from them XD

The ToB feat "Instant Clarity" imho is very nice to give them insta psionic focus to trigger psionic feats like Deep Impact. Better than psionic meditation, due to their racial -2 to Wisdom.

Hi. I'm restatting various githyanki NPCs for my upcoming campaign.

For Githwarriors capitans I'll use warblade as a base class (diamond mind discipline is perfect falvour-wise, since they're psionic creatures).

For Knights, instead of the awful blackguard class I'm thinking about paladin of tyranny 4/crusader X. I thoughts about RKV (removing the "workship Wee-Jas" fluff), but since paladin of tyranny has just the spells from UA, githyanki has -2 Wisdom and paladin is quite MAD, I'm more for the "holy warrior" ACF from Complete Champion.

Thinking about their maneuvers... Since they live in the Astral Plane, and Stone Dragon maneuvers works only when the martial adept is on the ground, should I gave some of them or role-wise is better to focus on other disicplines? (there would be a nice sinergy between their silver cord - severing swords and Mountain Hammer to ignore the cord's hardness, but since Mountain Hammer can't work if the adept is flying, it quite difficult to be in contact on the ground and be in melee with an astral body)

And about casters, since in the Astral Plane All spells and spell-like abilities are automatically Qucikened, does it should be better to avoid to give Quicken spells to githyanki casters (maybe give them Twin Spell instead)?

12
Can the archmage take the high arcana "spell power" more than once to pump his CL?

And if he's a sorcerer/wizard/ultimate magus, can he at least take "spell power" once for every arcane caster class he possesses?

Thanks in advance.

The Enlightened Fist (monk gish prestige class from Complete Arcane) get the "hold ray" feature at 7th level, being able to use a ray spell as a melee touch attack. At 3rd level he can use a melee touch attack as part of an unarmed full attack action.

Also, good ol'spectral hand can deliver 0-3rd level melee touch spells from a distance.

And yes, duskblade's arcane channeling talks about "ANY touch spell". Even ranged touch ones or spells from other classes.

Abjurant Champion is 6 levels long: the first level is called "1 (and only one) level in spellsword" ;)

I agree that JPM is better than EK. It's true that JPM loses 2 caster levels, but even with a full JPM build you can get the nice breakpoint "BAB 16+ and ability to cast 9th level spells" at level 20.

Thanks for the input.

Do you think that even if the shadow blade ruote is better even if you don't use "feat granting items"?

Min/Max 3.x / Champion of Corellon elven gish
« on: September 25, 2014, 06:10:26 AM »
Hi. I tried to create a gish using the Champion of Corellon prc (to have Elegant strike). Quite feat starved, but it manages to do the "4 attack per round and 9th level spells at level 20.

The build is:

Race: Elf (maybe snow elf from Frostburn to have -2 cha instead of -2 con)

Wizard 8
Swiftblade 3
Dragonslayer 1 (to have armor & weapon prof)
Champion of Corellon 2
Spellsword 1
Abjurant Champion 5

At level 20 we'll have BAB +16 and spells as a 17th level - wizard.

Assuming no flaws, we need UA wizard ACF to take fighter feats. We can use Otyugh Hole for free Iron Will.

1: Dodge, Combat Expertise
3: Mounted Combat
5: Mobility
6: Weapon Finesse
9: Combat Casting, Spring Attack
12: Improved Weapon Familiarity
13: X (bonus fighter feat, with Combat Expertise, Dodge, or Mounted Combat as a prerequisite)
15: free (maybe Practiced Spellcaster to have full CL)
18: free (Arcane Strike could be fitting, since the char is a gish, or even Power Attack if we use an Elven Courtblade to do some nasty combo with wraithstrike)

Without flaws, how can the build be improved? I know that dropping Champion of Corellon could make easier to build a gish, but I'd really like to keep the "Dex on attack & Damage".

17
Will they put the "chicken infested" flaw? ;)

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: [3.P] Is there a statblock for Cthulhu?

Haven't we already Pazuzu for that?

The "unspeakable presence" covers well the "loss of Sanity" aspect, imho. And even I really like that you can't really kill Cthulhu.

100% in line with the famous quote "That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die."

General D&D Discussion / Re: How many of you allow LA - templates?
« on: September 09, 2014, 03:00:53 AM »
I don't allow LA - template.

IIRC, is even hard to base the effective LA looking at the CR of a template. For example, CR - wise is not THAT different is a creature can use a SLA 3/day or at will. But LA - wise is a HUGE difference.

I'd use the Pathfinder Version (eventually retroconverting it to 3.5), since himho is very faithful to the original. He's got even the "when "killed" he becomes otherworldly vapor", and the "non euclidean" SQ is just a touch of class ;)
