So in my group's current Pathfinder campaign, we've managed to come into possession of an Intelligent +2 Unholy Dagger.
Since nobody in the party is good-aligned, and my character has a long history of making foolish bargains with evil beings in pursuit of wealth and power, I'm currently looking for ways to con the dagger into believing that my character is evil as well, so he can either wield it or at least get a better idea of it's abilities before selling it off to the highest bidder.
A few relevant facts:
My character, Lem, is a 6th level Halfling Warlock focused on social manipulation. He's currently got a +7 will save, a +17 to bluff, a +16 to diplomacy, and a +23 to intimidate. (+25 if used to demoralize.) He also has a +17 UMD and the warlock ability that let's him take 10 even in stressful situations--meaning he's three points away from auto-succeeding on the roll to emulate an alignment. The one thing he doesn't have is the charm invocation. We just hit 6th so I could take it this level, but other invocations are a priority and since it only affects one target at a time I'd rather not tie up my only Lesser invocation just to control my weapon.
I'm also the party item crafter, though I only have Craft Wondrous at the moment. One of the other party members is a half-elf with Paragon Surge, so we can nab any spell we need during downtime for crafting.
3.5 material is allowed, with GM permission.
The way I see it, there are three main obstacles I need to overcome here:
- Not getting controlled by the dagger in the event Lem looses an ego conflict.
- Getting an extra +3 to UMD, so I can take 10 and auto-make the check to emulate an alignment and not take negative levels from holding it.
- A way to detect as evil, or at least not detect as non-evil, in case the item can use one of the various detect alignment spells as one of it's powers.
The first one is relatively easy: A protection from evil spell should do the trick. Lem's the party item crafter, so a custom wondrous item that casts Prot. Evil in response to attempted mind control 3 times per day should suffice and be relatively cheap. I can tack on a UMD skill buff to cover the second issue, so the only thing I really have to worry about is convincing the item's intelligence that I'm evil. We're 99% sure that it's Chaotic Evil and I'm CN so we've already got that axis covered.
Undetectable Alignment seems like a good start. I can either claim that I'm low enough level that I don't register for Detect Evil, or admit to masking my alignment but claim that it's so I can walk among all the goody-two-shoes undetected. I'm pretty sure I can bullshit a magic dagger--unless it's Sense Motive is
really high, in which case the Prot. Evil should prevent the item from taking over long enough to shove it back in the extra-dimensional space we're currently keeping it in. The spell lasts 24hrs so a once per day command word item would do it for cheap. If I really have to prove to the item that I'm evil, I could try using a charge from my wand of Infernal Healing first, but since that only lasts a minute it's not an all-day solution.
So, any suggestions or insights? Other ways to fool alignment detection? I was thinking something that makes your alignment appear to be the same as whoever is checking would be nifty, but I don't know of any spells or items like that offhand.
