Rather abruptly forced into melee range, Aeloru did the only thing that seemed appropriate: take a deep breath, then strike out with a holy symbol--hard.

Vist's balls of lighting get the Cornugon down into a mess of charred flesh, although it starts to regenerate almost instantly. Iskandar is faster however and uses his blessed kukris to slice off the horned devil's head before it can get back up. The regenerating burned body twitches some more before it finally stops moving and healing itself.

Dyson lands a clean hit on another Bone Devil who hisses in pain and frustation.

Aeloru's holy symbol partially caves in the blood devil's chest, making it cough black blood as it is left reeling from the impact!

The remaining fiends silently eye the situation, seeing that both their their superiors are dead, and then teleport out of the battlefield one by one with perfect synchronization, coldly abandoning their dazed kin.

Vist

Popping the joints in his translucent neck, Vist glares at the remaining devil and extends a thumbs down motion with his hand.

Following that, Vist floats over to the headless Cornugon, looking around it's body for anything that looks onyx or wandlike.

The stench of half-burned devil flesh is horrendous, almost burning the wizard's eyes, but Vist manages to last long enough to find and pull a long thin tube finely crafted of dark purple mineral from a deep wound cut by Iskandar's blades on the infernal corpse's chest. If the devil blood and gore is cleaned off, there's tiny arcane marks etched upon its otherwise smooth surface.

Vist

Vist takes up the onyx wand carefully and examines it while he waits idly for the others to finish off the remaining devil.

The last bone devil is cleanly decapitated by the inevitable, and the infernal's body decays to glowing white dust that is scattered by the local wind.

Vist's vast arcana knowledge allows him to swiftly figure out how to operate the wand.

Vist

Handing the wand off to the Inevitable, Vist draws for Heaven's Eye from his pack.  Incanting softly, the translucent mage invokes a Scrying sensor in the court of the Great General.

A door of onyx opens, a path below emerges.  Pelor's light flashes silver in the heart of darkness.  Dawn shall come again. he intones through the distance.

Vist waits for 30 minutes, then takes the wand back and activates the portal, urging the party through.

After a few minutes several squads of pegasus and wyvern riders descend into the perimeter, clad in ebony and platinium armor, wielding sleek spears, swords and scrolls. The one in front salutes to the party and speaks:

“Good job clearing the target area, champions. We're the vanguard appointed by our Lord to charge in to Nessus with you, a great honor I feel grateful of sharing with you. As many of us as possible will pass into the portal once you deem the moment right to open it. Once we're in Nessus we'll split up and provide a distraction to draw out any enemy guardians and traps.

Personally speaking, I greatly envy you right now for your opportunity of challenging Asmodeus himself at their home citadel. But I also feel like my own squad would stand little chance in such a situation. Still the battle we will fight in the next hours will echo across the multiverse, and me and my mates will be able to proudly say we were a part of it.

More of my Lord's troops will be arriving shorty to secure the area and launch fresh attack waves. ”

Indeed as the party waits more and more squads of troops arrive, some flying, some on foot, some teleporting in, until there's a veritable army waiting for their opportunity to go in.

Once Vist activates the portal, it starts glowing a faint red, and you can feel an intense heat and smell of sulphur coming from the other side.

Iskandar distinguishes the faint sounds of combat in one of the many hallways around you. Looking in the direction, he spots a burning pit fiend just around the corner engaged in brutal combat against somebody else.

At their feet there appear to be the corpses of several slain lesser devils and celestials.

With a supreme focus of effort, the Inevitable shrugs off the cloying nature of the plane and stands silently awaiting directions from those it aids. Despite being sentient and powerful, it is nevertheless has a relatively simple nature and outlook, not unlike the simpler machines that it resembles.

Iskandar concentrates fully, pushing away the influence of the plane and renewing his will-derived defenses. Opening his eyes again, he spots the conflict  from afar.

"There seems to be a battle ongoing in the distance... one of the fiends is locked in combat with some other powerful being, perhaps a celestial of some sort? I admit, I have little experience with such creatures beyond what we have encountered as a group."

Trying to shake her head to clear the effects, Aeloru considered the devil's words carefully amongst the cacophony of battle. Trusting her allies to not invalidate her attempt at diplomacy and the infernal's own clear desire to escape, she chose the less immediately problematic option: one devil, in the long term, was less of an issue than assaulting Nessus without information.

"We will allow you passage in exchange for information. So long as it is made swift."

To her allies: "The Archon has forsaken its duty. Trust the celestial forces no more than the infernal; they care not for the souls of the dead as should be their duty."
