Title: The strange village-Chapter I
Post by: oslecamo on March 10, 2014, 06:10:05 PM
For years, decades perhaps, your main purpose on life has been to control Taint on the world, probably the greatest danger every sentient being ever faced, yet so few know the true facets of.

Your deeds are great enough that you've met face to face with Mage Lord Yadima himself, to better fight the spread of corruption and depravity in the Magedom. All of you have been offered positions on the organization of the Desert Ghosts, tasked with remaining always vigilant for any uncontroled presence of taint-to contain it when little, to burn it down when too dangerous.

In the common people's eyes, the Desert Ghosts are the Magedom organization tasked with purifying their land with holy fire. On a good day, they hold sudden festivals with fantastic fireworks and other great demonstractions of pyrotechniques that draw in tens of thousands of spectators. On a bad day, they burn down derelict buildings if not whole villages or even full towns that have been deemed too impure. They are an highly hierarchical organization, their supreme leader the Grand High Torch, who has the ultimate authority to burn anything he or she pleases.

Away from the common people's eyes, the Desert Ghosts perform all kind of covert operations. Their festivals are more often than not planned distractions to help their top agents perform their work. After all, depravity and corruption often rise to the surface when emotions run strong. However, they also know how to be discrete, to see and hear whitout being seen or heard, to make tainted people and items disapear when their corruption is still slight, so they may be put to better use. The great burnings are a last measure, when taint in an area has become too strong to deal with in a secret way.

Several of you accepted to join the Desert Ghosts, a position of power of prestige even if most people don't know who you are, but even if you refused, you maintain a good standing for having helped them so many times, directly or indirectly.

It's thanks to your connection with the Desert Ghosts that you've come to the desert oasis village of Kaipo.

Normally such a place would be beneath your attention, but a couple of rumors have drawn your attention. First, tales of an outbreak of mad people, that seem to fit with the usual symptoms of corruption and depravity. Second, word is that a Lunarian is in the area as well. The inhabitants of the moon are a pretty rare sight on this world, and when they come down, is usually because something important is happening.

As you draw near Kaipo, you can see right away the village is in a state of decay, with crumbling buidings and most people on the street seeming apathetic, barely aknowledging your presence and just lumber around doing their everyday routines whitout any hint of emotion. They don't seem sick or malnourished, but you can see many of them have bandages and wrappings on their bodies, as if covering wounds.

And then you meet her in the middle of the crowd-lunarians usually look pretty much as humans, but this one is standing out as a sore thumb due to her exotic clothes. In particular her Mithral Breastplate that flares brightly under the setting sun.

Tainted and decayed... this town truly demonstrated everything that the moon wasn't. If it wasn't for the job ahead of her, Tsukiyo would go home; back to her tomes and studies. But no, this demonstrated exactly why she was here; if the land was tainted then the oceans would follow, and thus the moon's purity would be compromised. No, it had to be stopped.

Simply, though, she didn't have the power to do so entirely on her own. At least she could make a start... if she could work out how to go about helping these people. So suspicious, to cover themselves like that...

A man wearing fullplate who is literally glowing like a huge bonfire, and riding a translucent dragon, sets down in the village alongside a few other creatures. His loud voice booms out over the quiet courtyard "Greetings Lunarian! We bring you greetings from Magelord Yadima! I am Steyven!"

From behind the brightly glowing Steyven a small girl peeked out and looked in the Lunarian's direction with a dour, gloomy look. She didn't give the woman much attention beyond that however as the little girl began climbing down the side of the translucent dragon and plopped down on the ground, brushing off her dress once there. She then promptly took a few steps towards wandering off but quickly caught herself, looking back up towards Steyven as if looking for any sign that she should hold off for now; perhaps until he was done conversing with the alien, then.

Those that could see through magical disguises of sorts would quickly notice the exposed ball joints on her hands, peeking out from the neckline of her dress, and the much more lifeless glare hidden behind that dour gaze revealing that the child probably was not human, at the least.

A shimmer is briefly visible to the visiting Lunarian as her impeccable vision pierces through an illusion, and she can now see a small pixie garbed mainly in blue and red silks flying upon delicate wings. A pure white silk sash is tied around her waist, and its taint-warding power is apparent. However, as her divine sight continues piercing the fey creature's layered façade, she notices that the pixie's body appears to be suffused with hotly-burning flame. The fey isn't on fire, however; rather, it seems to be a part of its very being. She is certainly not a normal pixie.

Steyvan, however, does not see the fire, though he does notice the pixie's own innate glow overlapping his own as she flies off toward the Lunarian.

All others currently see nothing of the pixie, though they know she is there. If it weren't apparent before, it is once she begins speaking.

"Good day, Oh Exalted One. Erm, Your Divine Majesty? I've never met a Goddess before, so I'm not sure what's appropriate for addressing you. I've never met a Lunarian either, so this is a double-first for me. In any case, welcome! I'm Serafina, but you can call me Sera for short. Most people call me Fina, but we've got a Nina already and I didn't want to confuse anyone that I didn't mean to confuse. You must understand, right? I hear you know everything. Is that true? Gosh but that must be a terrible burden. Useful, though. For instance, we sure could use your help."

The pixie seems nice enough, and perhaps a bit nervous in the Lunarian's presence, though one gets the sense that Sera is no stranger to rambling...

Floating down next to the dragon is what appears to be a suit of armor that is missing its legs.  Its gauntlets are slightly detached, though remaining floating in the appropriate space, further confirming that the armor is empty.  It carries a large shield in one hand that looks to be a part of its body, although a closer look reveals that it is just a shield that has been specially crafted to look so.

"You are the Lunarian, here to help fight the taint."  The voice emanating from the helmet is firm and strong, not echoing as one might have imagined.  "I am Bulwark," it adds, almost as an afterthought.

A man clad in red armor that had it not been for the dull red and earth tones of the desert would have been seen out of place stands on a rooftop corner watching the new comers making their grand entrances. Certainly the legless one won that round. The Lunarian's presence did draw a number of adventurers here as he thought it might. Yadima has certainly carried through, perhaps it's time for him to join a group after all.

Pivoting on his foot he turns and walks towards the stairs leading downwards to meet this esteemed recruits of the Desert Ghosts. Stepping out from the tavern's entrance he continues forward into the group simply nodding his hello to them.

Imos looked at the conglomerate moving towards the Lunarian - not hard to recognize her, she stood out - and followed. He smiled at the Lunarian, and then looked around. "You're not here of your free will, you're here to cleanse those of us with tainted souls. And why is that... Mmmn... Ah, I see it now, the oceans. Taint would spread from here to the oceans, and from there to the Moon. And that would be quite a problem, wouldn't it?" He frowned, and then started suddenly. "Apologies, I failed to introduce myself; I am Imos Agamen."

Steyven looks at the two unknown newcomers, and back to the Lunarian wondering to himself <Who are these two guys? Is he right? Is that why the Lunarian is here? I hope she answers. Man... my leg is itching.> Then he leans down in his saddle, and begins scratching under the armor on his ankle.

The man detects the following thought:

'Oh, I hope she doesn't hate me now. Why am I so nervous? I've held an entire city captivated, cleansed taint from dozens of corrupted souls and lands, put a great Dragon to sleep with my magic, and am one with the power and majesty of elemental flame, but the presence of a God has got me rambling? I must just be making a fool of myself...

As Imos glances into the mind of Nina he notices rather devoid of any thoughts, perhaps almost making him wonder if she's resisted his influence. A few echoes came through shortly after, though she seemed to simply be repeating everything everyone was saying around her to herself in her mind. Hardly having been granted intelligence for nearly that long, frivolous and inane thoughts didn't exactly come naturally to her.

Imos paused for a fraction of a second, glancing over the thoughts of those he could read, and found no hostility, so he relaxed - if only slightly. These people were truly here just to help, and that was a blessing. Still, he would wait for the Lunarian to respond before talking any more.

"Required? No, I would not say that I was required... though you are right in that the threat of Taint reaching the seas is what draws my attention.  The looming threat of war by an organisation supposedly committed to destroying the corruption makes it essential that the matter is kept under control," the Lunarian answered, looking around at the people that had arrived presumably more to talk with her than to deal with the taint in this one village. Such a strange amalgamation of people hardly seemed the kind to be stirred for such a remote place.

"We could skip the formalities and start with this village... or, if you are willing, I would like to learn more about you all, and the world from the perspective of one that lives here. Just a touch, and allow me to learn all I can."

In other words: the scholar wanted to learn everyone's life history.

Noticing Steyven's inclination to continue with the Lunarian, Nina turns away from him and scans the surrounding village, or what is immediately nearby of it anyways. "Is the objective not to investigate the possible presence of Taint in the area right now..." she quietly mentions towards no one in particular. "The alien is optional."

The stupid grin on Steyven's face is quickly replaced by a look of anguish, then guilt, and reluctant resignation, all within less than a second. "Yes... you're right, Nina."

Then he turns to the village and yells in a very loud, unfriendly voice "Repent now, Sinners, or face the flames of Justice!"

"Wonderful! Through justice bring about peace!" he exclaims enthusiastically.

Turning towards Nina, "You suggested we take initiative and secure the area before any real discussions. I agree to that and our friend here appears eager to continue." Turning towards the rest, "Is there anything else we need to discuss now, or can it wait until we're sure there are no spies about?"
Title: Re: The strange village-Chapter I

"Of course there are spies. Even if none here work as such, all it takes is for one person to live and talk about what they have seen. We are not, it must be said, an inconspicuous group: people will know. Even should there be proper spies, I see no reason to be concerned, it would be very... unwise for their masters to take action," Tsukiyo said, wondering why spies were even on his mind. It wasn't a reasonable concern for the location.

"If we're worried about eavesdropping, allow me..." Imos said quietly, and reached out, brushing against the minds of the group, and connecting them telepathically to one another, and the Lunarian. "Now then, isn't this better? No pestering ears to listen in."

Feeling the link, Nina didn't quite understand the sensation much less how to use it. Thinking was certainly still being tested on, but not thinking at the others now was...she didn't know how to describe this actually. Inadvertently, she ended up echoing what Imos had said through the link. "So...who are you worried about spying on us?", Steyven's question, too was repeated into the link. She caught on to what she was doing however the second time and gave Imos a curious look. "I don't quite understand?" she spoke aloud, however it too ended up being echoed simultaneously through the telepathy as she did.

Then he turns to the village and yells in a very loud, unfriendly voice "Repent now, Sinners, or face the flames of Justice!"

The villagers around Steyven cower for a moment, slowly backing away from the wyrm warrior and spreading out while most of their eyes are fixed on him. Some with confusion. Some with hope. Some with fear. Some with hate.

Repent? For what? I'm not a sinner!
Not me! Them! It's their fault! They're worst than me!
What wrong did we ever do to deserve this?
Please just end our misery...
It's easy to speak of Justice when you're clearly rich and well in life like you look...

Mumble several voices around you.

Meanwhile, due to the crowd crowd spreading out, Tsukiyo notices that most of the nearby bandages of the villagers are not covering normal wounds, but rather hideous deformations, many slowly oozing oily substances. Some seem like vermin nests from which centipedes slowly cral out, others where flesh and skin are crystallizing into mineral forms...

Mentally, Tsukiyo's voice was much louder; the weight of age and mental acuity lending a force to it that set it at odds with the soft tone that she maintained. "The villagers are hiding Taint. Without the bandages, it would be obvious... but it has yet to reach the point that it cannot be healed. If any of you are skilled as a healer, I believe we can help these people. Without burning the land to a crisp."

"Villagers! We can help to cure the corruption that afflicts you. All that is needed is your time, and your co-operation."

Mentally Steyven says "If the land itself is tainted, we'll first need to heal the land, or move them to an untainted place."

Outloud he says "Yes, we are here to help! And I am not as different from you as you might imagine, friends. I too was once corrupted, and depraved. I committed terrible crimes, and was for a time lost to madness! But I was redeemed, and so can you be! Here! Today! There are those among us who can remove your Taint, give you a new lease on life, as I was once given! We are here to clean the corruption from your homes, and from you!"

Steyven glares at Bulwark, and continues his pleas with the villagers. He steps down from his draconic mount, and from the twist of his ankle it becomes obvious why he rarely dismounts. His limping, awkward gate makes him look even more pathetic than most of the villagers. His voice now sounds meek despite being raised enough so that he can be heard. "We need your help, though, to help us help you. When did the problems start here?

Where do you get your food and water? Is there a central well, or food storage?"

Many of the villager's looks change to contempt when they see Steyven's limping form. One of the villagers, looking somewhat healthier and whitout any bandages, steps forward

There's an underground river nearby. That's what keeps the village's pool filled, quenches our thirst, and irrigates our crops... But it has started to taste somewhat fouler starting a year ago. You're free to drink from it and refill your reserves.

But you look like you're all more than well fed enough. I don't see why we should tell you where we keep our solid supplies.

Some of the villagers behind him proceed to cheer him on:

Yeah, we don't need your help or your pity!

You sound just like that shaman that came here months ago, he said he would help us, but we did everything he said and everything just got worst!

Just leave us alone! We'll turn this around by ourselves!

Most villagers still seem hesitant tough, not saying anything, looking like they're expecting to see how the situation develops.

Things used by everyone, like the common water and food stores, are I think the most likely to be the sources of the problem. Maybe someone's poisoned your river upstream? We'll do what we can to find out if that's true, and put a stop to it if it is.

Now where might I find this river?"

Serafina whispers to Steyven, "Hey, can you have the 'dragon' look at the crowd?"

She then flies up near the astral construct's head, and then lands on it. When it begins looking around at the crowd, she begins saying, "Good people of this village, we are no con artists trying to steal your food, and we know you are not 'sinners'. We seek only to benefit the land and its people... and that means all of you. Though my companion is simple and not very good with words, his good intentions are true. You don't need to show us where your food is. When did your problems start arising? Months ago, when this 'Shaman' showed up? Or long before that? Perhaps if the Shaman caused the problems to begin with, we could track him down for you, and at least you would get some small measure of satisfaction from making him answer for his deceit. And, if we are unable still to help, we will leave, and everything shall be as it was before we arrived. Though if you would be so kind as to direct us to this river, we would appreciate it."

Basically all villagers seem to buy Serafina and Steyven's combined "performance", most of their gazes upon you changing to a mix of curiosity and hope. The one who had spoken earlier talks again, but this time adressing the astral construct. And sounding a lot more polite.

My sincerest apologies if any of us sounded rude my lords... I'm afraid our recent hardships have numbed our sense of hospitality.

The foulness started roughly one year ago, and it was one month after that the shaman appeared. None of us had ever seen him before, and we never saw him again after he suddenly vanished from the village another month later.

If you wish to check our river, just follow that road over there that goes west. But I don't see how anyone could've poisoned it, since the source of the river is underground as far as we know.

"Just two and a half centuries ago, there was some trouble with orcs. They dug out tunnels following the course of the river; it is entirely possible that this 'shaman' could have re-excavated them," Tsukiyo explained, after some thought. If the tunnels had been exacavated to get at the source... well, depending on construction--whether they intended to keep them open--there was either a risk of collapse or traps and possibly guardians to deal with. Troublesome.

Some random trivia about a village I'd never even heard of before being told I was being sent here a couple of days ago... and not only are you not from this kingdom... you're not from this world!"

"Ah, it seems that I forgot to introduce myself," Tsukiyo said, brushing a stray hair behind her head and pulling a folded piece of paper--and paper, not papyrus or parchment--out of her sleeve and unfolding it. She seemed to have prepared her introduction in advance, then forgotten to memorise it or check it.

"I am Tsukiyo-no-Mikoto; one of those few living Lunarians originally born on this land, before the moon was inhabited. I am a scholar and the one whose duty it is to first see to any corruption that threatens the moon. This is far from the first time I have visited: in previous eras, I have gathered a following as a Goddess of Knowledge, of the Moon, and of Purity," she recited, pausing and slipping the paper back where it came from, "That last portion is a self-fulfilling prophecy."

Nina moves over and perches upon one of the forefeet of the dragon, rather than climbing all the way up to it's back, as it appears Steyven is ready to pursue this lead about the river.

"Miss alien sounds like a wealth of helpful information." Albeit probably a compliment, her dour tone didn't make her sound as if giving any credit to the woman. After a pause, she then made to correct herself after the alien finally provided a title to address her with; "Tsukiyo-no-Mikoto."

The villagers crowd parts way to let you walk down the stone road towards the underground river as you talk between yourselves.

After just a few minutes, you reach a rocky formation, upon which there's the entrance to a large tunnel, from which blows a refreshing wind, somewhat humid, a clear contrast to the dry desert air. The walls of the tunnel look natural, but there's rough stairs sculpted on the floor that lead you down. Following them, you soon start hearing the sound of rushing water, and after some more time you arrive at a large underground cavern. A gushing river intersects the area, bursting from a massive hole in one of the cavern's walls, and disapearing underground trough a hole in the other side. Cracked and broken clay pots line the rock walls along with some iron torch supports fixed to the walls, and the floor is a mix of wet sand, mud and rock.

"It looks pretty dark down there and Steyven is just as blinding. Do you guys want torches?" he asks as he reaching into his pocket and throws a lit campfire about two feet in size on the ground near the entrance. The campfire is eight perfectly sized and burning sticks that appear eager to be used as a torch.

Most of you don't notice anything strange on the cavern at first glance.

Bulwark, Serafina and Imps hear some faint noises across the  cavern walls... The sound of metal striking stone repeatedly, but barely perceptible over the loud noise of the rushing river.

You also notice a floor  section that seems a bit different from the others. Examining the ground closer, he finds a camouflaged trapdoor under the mud and stones. It was carefully hidden, but isn't a trap. Rather, it opens into a dark, narrow tunnel that leads downward. A foul smell now rises from the new opening below you. It seems like an adult human could squeeze trough it if they tried, but they would have to crawl.

After a brief pause he says "I guess we're going down there, aren't we?"

"That's... a neat trick! Wow! Too bad that won't protect against this smell... You probably don't have to worry about that though, huh? Goodness, that is wretched!"

Serafina unties the sash from her waist and re-ties it around her head, covering her nose and mouth as best as she can. It doesn't help much, but she's prepared to do just about anything to reduce the effect of the stench.

Not wanting to end up smelling like a sewer, and wanting some protection against possible traps and rockfalls in this tunnel, Tsukiyo put some of her power to use and followed. If there was any muck of filth down here, it would end up plastered to the tunnel walls rather than drenching everybody.

It would be no use if someone trod in a dead body or something, though.

Inside the darkness and tight space, you have an hard time keeping track of how far you've progressed or how much time has passed, altough you can still hear the sound of the rushing river trough the stone, meaning the tunnel isn't straying too much far away from it even as it twists and turns multiple times. But the stench, the stench just keeps getting worst. And after a while, all of you can hear the sound of metal striking stone somewhere underground.

Then you see a faint light at the end of the tunnel, and after some more feet of progress you emerge in a large cavern. The source of the stench becomes instantly evident-there's rotting humanoid corpses everywhere! The floor is covered in them, while more bodies are on the walls and ceiling, hanging from metal chains. Some have been reduced to skeletons, but most still have tatters of decaying flesh and skin hanging from their bones. Many hold dusty weapons like axes, spears and swords of some kind, and are clad in light crude armor.

There seems to be another tunnel opening at the other side of the room.

At the center of the room the corpses pile up in an huge mound, over which stands a stone throne, in which sits a female corpses clad in typical Magedom priestess clothes. Multiple chains are attached to her flesh. Then suddenly the corpse's head turns toward you and opens her eyes and speaks to you:

Tsukiyo joins in, dumping her knowledge of their likely opponent--including what she knows of her actual capabilities--and then adding in some more general information about harming her specifically (and undead generally). Sadly, meeting any of the conditions was more or less impossible, and undead weren't known for being possible to subdue.

It was worth trying, at least. If not, they'd have to keep watch whilst purifying. And maybe she'd regenerate free of Taint.

Nina scoured through all of the new information on this woman that was suddenly unloaded on them thanks to Tsukiyo and absorbed it rather readily. What stood out for Nina though the most was how it was possible this Joana had indeed lost herself to her Taint and Tsukiyo's prodding about that very same point helped form her plan of action now.

"If they threaten you, then just I?" she asks as she glances between Joana and Tsukiyo as if asking permission of the both of them, not wanting to inadvertently cause exactly what Tsukiyo sounded like she was expecting before everybody was prepared.

Imos sighed, and readied himself for combat, standing in square *14.

I need a WILL save, DC 26, against read thoughts from the mob (and any other enemies in a 60' cone in front of me). If it would be immune, it's DC 21 instead. It makes the save with a -3 penalty (which is on all saves, and all non-STR-based Skill Checks and Ability Checks). If it (or another enemy) closes to within 30' (radius, not cone) I need another DC 26 WILL save against an Aura of Menace, or take -2 on attacks, AC, and saves. If it's vulnerable to FORT effects, as its undeadness seems to be contradicting, I need DC 20 or it's sickened for a minute. Wow, that's a bunch of saves.

In general, someone who had just met Serafina would assume that she would freak out in a situation like this, that she would lose her cool and be useless. They were wrong. Sera thrived in the heat of battle, and she used that heat to sear her foes.

Just before Nina dives into the pile, Steyven says with a low, almost inaudible voice "Yes... time to burn..." and begins swinging his odd weapon over head. Tsukiyo continued to relay information as she moved forwards--including that when Joana inevitably came back if they killed her, she'd be as tainted as ever, so subduing was vastly preferable to killing. Amongst the stream of semi-random facts was more precise knowledge of how to harm these things for maximum efficiency.

Somehow, she'd gained an amazingly crafted sword. It seemed to simmer with some barely-contained radiance, though its practicality was rather... questionable with the ornate carvings adorning it.

After speeding up the rest of the party, Sera flies upwards to the ceiling of the cavern, taking care not to bump on the numerous decomposed bodies hanging from the chains attached to the stone above.

Steyven advances next, his breath burning down the front rank of Joana's unliving bodyguards, burning several to ashes.

Nina follows up, diving right inside the undead mob, skillfully feinting trough the dozens of rotten hands trying to grab or block her path, until she finally reaches the chain priestess. Joana is caught completely by surprise by the bold attack, and Nina's fist connects directly with her face. The tiny doll can feel it is harder than steel on contact. She still succeeds in shattering its left side, sending Joana flyng upwards! The room trembles a bit as Joana impacts the ceiling at great speed, before she falls back down togheter with some debris, the nearby undead hurrying to shield their mistress once more.

Bulwark closes in, conjuring a defensive bubble around Nina before striking at the pack of walking corpses in front of him, cuting a couple down with his axe before smashing another with his shield.

The ranks of the undead quite depleted, Imos manages to penetrate their minds:
"Obey Joana.
Serve Joana.
Obey Joana.
Serve Joana..."

Having synchronized with his targets, Imos launches a flurry of spines, taking several more down, before launching a volley of mystic missiles at Joana. The magic projectiles however fail to properly lock on and end up exploding against some of her surrounding bodyguards.

Izuna blends in with the shadows and suddenly fist marks appear on some of outward undeads, before they too collapse into dust.

With its numbers considerably reduced, and most of the remaining undeads half-broken, the mob still holds togheter, and in the middle of them you can see Joana rise her arms with her hands hanging down. Her eyes start glowing with more intensity while the rest of the room seems to become even darker and colder.

Yyesss... Come closer...

Suddenly, the piles of corpses closer to you start moving, and several of the corpses rise, forming new mobs! Smaller than Joana's own, but still dangerous looking.

Before you can react, the depleted mob at the center surges forward, trampling over the front party members before lashing out with a variety or rusted weapons, trying to overwhelm you with their numbers!

Joana herself grabs four of the chains attached to her arms with her hands, and violently rips them off. In a fluid movement, she flings the weapons in the air, and as they fly, the metal links sprout razor barbs. Joana twists her arms, and the flying chains twist in mid-air acordingly, striking at Nina and Imos with great speed and power. On contact, there's sudden bursts of purple energy that drain their vitality.

A massive stream of fire out of nowhere burns a sizeable chunk of one of the new undead mobs, plus of Joana's depleted mob.

Serafina follows up on the burning, turning more corpses to dust, and many more fall on the ground with the strength of the impact!

Tsukuyomi, Imos and Steyven then combine their efforts to tear trough the last bodyguards of Joana, finally exposing her.

Nina quickly takes the chance to inflict two quick lunges with her spear. Joana tries to dodge and isn't fast enough, yet the tip of the spear barely penetrates her hardened flesh.  The doll can't stop feeling like she may as well be trying to pierce trough a steel block. Nina then swiftly retreats to the back of the cavern with her needles, and  this time Joana proves faster as she twists one of the chains attached to her arm to lash at the fleeing doll's back.

Bulwark follows up his assault personally engaging with Joana with a flurry of attacks, but altough he seems to first catch Joana off-guard and inflict a cut on her shoulder, she then procceeds to dodge all of his other attacks with a disturbing grace.

Why won't you stop moving?

Screams Joana, now partially charred from Serafina's flaming feedback, as the priestess grabs two more chains firmly in her hands, steps behind Bulwark, and procceeds to lash out with them. The other floating chains simultaneously lash, even more violently than before! Imos finds himself unable to escape the attacks, while Bulwark, Tsukuyomi and Steyven find themselves wrapped in tightening metal links!

The smaller undead mobs limber towards you as Joana strikes with her chains, attempting to swarm you under dozens of rotting bodies and rusty weapons, but they prove less effective than Joana's corpse bodyguards, now all reduced to dust in the cavern's floor.

You can now also see clearly that dark smoke is exiting from Joana's wounds, and as it comes out, they're slowly closing up.

As Nina escaped and the chain followed after her, she twisted around to face it in mid-flight as if waiting for it and intercepts it with a tiny fist. It's a glancing strike however as the chain merely curves around and hits her regardless. Almost competently unseen by all, Izuna decides to change tactics and stop some of the creatures from swarming over everyone. Slamming his hands together as he jogs around to better see the horde behind everyone. He slams his left arm into the ground as it rapidly growing and thickening spined vines spring up over the area. It's one of Izuna's best techniques, and enormously useful as a fuel source.

The chains, though they ensnared the goddess, seemingly failed to harm her; an invisible barrier repulsed the damage itself and the chains could be seen tightly pulled against what looked like the glimmer of paper in the air, rather than Tsukiyo's flesh. The mob, meanwhile, bypassed that but continued to present no threat to her integrity.

"Sadly, I'm rather tied up at the moment."

And then she struck out at the undead that had rather stupidly decided to stand right beside her.. Flaming sword was go.

Steyven once again unleashes a gout of flames from his mouth, and instead of washing over Tsukiyo (who is between he and Joana), they instead dodge around her in a twisting path and slam into the chain priestess from behind. Then he dissappears in a flash, and reappears right next to Joana and unleashes a flurry of blows from his spinning weapon and also his shield, each burning with the flames of his weapon's odd song.

A fire sparkles in Serafina's eyes as she is finally able to single Joana out from the rabble. Softly, she speaks, "Burn, ye corrupted, and may ye be reborn into purity."

Guessing that much of Joana's control over her nearby minions seems to be connected to her chains, Sera conjures a layer of slippery grease upon the chain in her left hand, making it difficult to hold onto.

As Serafina condemns Joana, the rest of the party unleashes a variety of attacks upon the chain priestess. Each of them causes ever growing pure-white flames to burst from the undead priestess on top of breaking more of her hardned flesh, until she's turned into a ball of light that illuminates the whole cavern as if it was daylight.

Ah... I remember now... I remember the warmth of the sun above...

And with this last words, she explodes in a burst of light! As the flames disappear as fast as they bursted out, the only thing left of her body being a pile of dust, upon which lay her chains and some charred pieces of clothes and jewlery she was wearing.

The other undeads, as well as the animated chains, instantly freeze with their mistress's destruction, and then fall limp on the floor once more, except those caught on Izuma's sudden forest that remain holded up by the throned branches in some macrabre display.

Nina turned her gaze to the ground as Tsukiyo gave her answer. "Then maybe we can return later..."

Her attention turned to herself finally and the few marks still upon her from the battle. As well, a noticeable but still small crack ran along the side of her face that she could feel under her magical disguise. "...I'll require some repair later if not available currently." she thought aloud to herself as she walked up to Joanna's remains and stared at them once again as though considering collecting them. In the end she left them be and moved closer towards the tunnel Serafina had pointed out sounds had been coming from earlier and a bland, grey trail of energy followed her as she did.

As Sera piles up and burns the corpses, the atmosphere inside the cavern seems to lighten up a bit.

While the rest of the party patches up their wounds and takes a short rest, Tsukio and Imos team up to carefully examine the cavern.

Around two thirds of the corpses seem to be of mostly of orcs, with some hobgoblins, humans, lizardfolk, duergar and troglodytes mixed in. The other third however, belong to a race you can't recognize upon closer examination. They have thin tails, sharp teeth, and what pieces of skin they have leftover are covered in short, dirty black fur. Some have third extra arms, or two heads, or both of those. If you had to guess, you would say they're unfortonate beings who've been too heavily disfigured by taint corruption.

From the tunnel that Nina approached, a chittering sound started growing louder. First only heard by Imos and Tsukyo's sharp senses, but steadily growing until all of you can hear it as you rest.

Imos and Tuskyo also find what looks like a secret passage on the western side of the cavern, the entrance covered by a rock that seemed part of the wall. Taking a peek inside, the tunnel curves after a few dozen feet, and there's some  faint  green light coming from the other side.

Tsukiyo's expression grew grim as she studied the ratlike beings, stepping back once she'd worked out what they were beyond the effects of the taint. This was not good, at all. "The situation here is far more serious than the minor taint of the village above suggests. These... creatures should be gone; wiped from existence. Thousands of years ago, those of us who lived on the moon co-ordinated their eradication. Every last one should have been burned to ash... but it seems like some have survived. Know this: they are more intelligent than their corruption suggests... and to the last they embrace Taint."

"I would explain more, but I think they might be about to show themselves."

The resurgence of these ratlike beasts was trouble indeed; even if they could destroy whatever infestation was here, that left the possibility of more having survived... and Tsukiyo considered it unlikely that it would be easy to arrange any sizeable force to scour the dark places of the world for their lairs.

As Steyven calls back his mount and Izuna brings moldy life to the cavern, Nina approaches the other cavern passage, starting to prepare herself to make a stand.

In front of her is a dark tunnel that  splits in two, longer than her spear reach. The chittering sound is even clearer at this position, but Nina can't see anything out of the ordinary. Then suddenly something is flying towards her and before she can react, green, bubbling acid splatters across her clothes! A split second later, another projectile follows from the same direction, but this time it just grazes her and hits the floor, releasing more acid that  starts corroding the stone. When Nina looks back at the tunnel, where before there were just seemingly still shadows around the corners, now are two human-sized rat-like creature, standing on their back legs and  holding slings and glass spheres on their front paws. The parts of their bodies that aren't covered in brown rags reveals dirty black fur, that matches the surrounding tunnel enviroment to almost perfection.

Almost simultaneously Bulwark suddenly becomes inert, then falls to the floor, the armor pieces separating and rolling across the cavern floor, as if the mystic forces that had binded them togheter so far had been drained away by some unknown force.

Nina's needle knocks the sling right out of the left creature's hand, but the other manages to keep the grip on his weapon, before the moving doll gets out of their sight.

The disarmed Azanideo then draws a rusty-looking dagger from his robes and starts sprinting towards the position where Nina was just ago with a series of quick, short steps,  but that leaves him in clear sight of Serafina. Unleashing her fey magics, the creature yawns as his eyes close and he drops his dagger on the floor, before he curls himself up in a ball of fur and rags on the cavern floor, clearly asleep.

You then hear more quick steps from the tunnel, but this time clearly away from you as they grow fainter before you cease hearing them at all.

However, this may not be needed, as we would have to cleanse the river."

The first thing the goddess did upon arrival was to catalogue the enemies they were facing, identify their weakpoints, and relay as much of this information to her allies as possible. The second was to change back once more from 'wise teacher' to 'hit things with a golden blade': as against the undead before, she summoned an elaborately-embellished falchion, gleaming far too brightly for this cruel place--even more so after the goddess said but a single word.

Nina's ribbon assault tears and wraps around her "mount" leaving it pretty hurt and restrained, and it seemed like the warlord would've suffered the same fate, but at the last moment he throws his ragged cape in the path of the ribbons and the piece of clothing takes most of the damage, with the azanideo being only lightly damaged. Underneath the dirty garment is revealed a belt filled with strange contraptions.

Imos auras quickly reveal the exalted surrounding the party are quite durable of both mind and body, only one fallking to sickness, and another opening its mind to him. It's not a pleasant feeling. When Imos fires his spines, the warlord's armor proves to still be quite sturdy despite its apparent bad condition, and the projectiles fail to find an opening.

As Serafina speeds up her companions, Steyven steps forward to attack the warlord in personal combat. As the bullroarer comes down to smash the warlord's helmet, the azanídeo reveals surprising skill at managing to deflet it with its armored gauntlet. However Steyven is relentless in his assault and his two next blows get under the warlord's guard and crush some of his armor plates, igniting the fur underneath. At first the azanídeo doesn't seem much botherered by the fire, but as they burst in white sacred flames, it squeals in clear pain.  The warlord still manages to pull back before Steyven sucessfully activates the bullroarer's secret surge ability.

Tsukyo creates the perfect weapon for the situation (or at least the weapon she considers better for their current challenge), Isuma creates a miniature forest to entrap the exalted.

Naked skins dangerous! Deal with them! I'll go get help!-squeals the warlord, grabbing three strange tiny small  oval devices with rough surfaces from his belt that he throws at Steyven. The first misses as the azanídeo is partially blinded by the righteous light of the warrior, but as the trinket falls to the floor, it explodes violently in a burst of flame so intense the stone floor itself is partially melted! All party members but Isuna are caught in the blast, as well as one of the exalted, but the flames don't seem to affect it.

The two next bombs from the warlord land right upon Steyven, giving him no opportunity to take cover from the blast, and still reaching his allies. When the smoke clears you see the warlord has swiftly moved away from you, unnaturally fast for someone clad in heavy armor, and is now behind the exalted who was guarding the entrance, who meanwhile moved closer to you, raising a clawed hand and from it unleashing a dark ray of draining energy upon Steyven.

The exalted behind the party starts shouting from behind the vines now separating it from you:
You little shitfaces think you're special with those fancy powers of yours? You're just more food for us! The moment you decided to come here, you've proved how seriously retarded and braindead you are, because you've just thrown away the worthless existences your creators gave you! You're less than pathetic!

Its insults are filled with vitriolic, malice and hate that threatens to sour your mood. Then another of the exalted adds:
In other words, worms, HALT!

The last word has an overhwleming, powerful power behind it, and you feel compeled to obey it. The third exalted inside the vines doesn't say anything but instead spits green bile on the floor next to you, and from there sprout two hideous red beings quite similar to its "parent", except they're "just" as tall as Steyven and lack wings, plus are carrying rusted glaives. The fourth and last trapped exalted meanwhile is trying to shake off Nina from over him,  then suddenly disappears in a puff of smoke, and appears again outside the vines, leaving Nina behind.

Nina's lance pierces the armor and impales itself on the fleeing Warlord's shoulder, making it squeal again in pain, and again when the more white flames burst from the wound, but the azanídeo proves quite durable and tenacious, managing to pull its body away from the weapon as it scurries behind the approaching exalted.

With extreme irritation at being nearly immolated, the goddess ablated the worst of the damage through a hasty shield, leaving a minor amount of damage that began to heal even as she, somewhat poorly, attempted to cut through one of the smaller Exalted to buy herself a path out of this mess of trees and outsiders.

Steyven quickly dissappears and reappears just outside the reach of the azenido next to him, then opens his mouth and breathes a gout of flames, engulfing the warlord and the two azenido nearest him. Then Steyven quickly hurries behind a column to try and avoid any reprisals from the warlord. He can't afford to be hit with any more of those flaming bombs...

While the Warlord was definitely a priority, this situation somehow felt a bit more precarious than the last fight and trying to pull off the same trick twice in a row gave Nina a strange feeling; though a lot of feelings were generally still strange with her. Regardless, there was something really big still right next to her, and one of the other ones was spitting up reinforcements. If they could all do that, they needed to be stopped before her party got too far behind on the numerical advantage. The tiny girl leaps off the ground and bounds up the form of the Exalted beside her in much the same fashion she did it's friend. Crawling around to it's head, she somehow perched herself before it and brings about a pair of tiny fists that promptly begin radiating in golden energy before suddenly unleashing a torrent of punches at it's head with such force that the golden power burst right through the giant rat and continued into it's allies beyond it.

With more reinforcements and her allies facing increasingly annoying odds, Serafina decides it's time to even up the field again. Were she not invisible, she would be seen to glow softly, her eyes becoming soft orbs of flame. She raises her hands, and with an effort of will channeled into her magic, brings them down again. Then, invisibly, she flies out from under Tsukiyo to head off the Warlord.

Imos spines shot at the Exalted whose vulnerabilities he could sense succeed on weakening it, before Nina lulls the monster and his spawn to a deep sleep even as the battle rages around them!

Tsukyo's blade proves of a refined craft indeed as it slices the other standing spawn neatly in half, the goddess barely feeling any resistance from its flesh against her weapon.

The Azanídeo Warlord manages to duck out in time to evade the worst from Steyven's flame, the nearby Exalted isn't so fast and is entangled by the pure white flames, screaming in pain!

Nina follows up with her flurry of radiant punches. The Azanídeo once more tries to dodge the incoming attacks with seemingly impossible agility despite its bulky armor. But the animated doll was ready for that, and her wave of attacks elegantly matches her target's evasion attempts to smash it against the ground anyway, before the giant rat burts in more pure white flames! Nina can feel the charred pile of flesh still twitches under the grasp of her martial energy, although it isn't offering resistance anymore. The other nearby exalted simply explodes into a burst of scarlet light, leaving behind a smell of sulphur.

The expression of the other exalted changes to panic at seeing their master fallen, and then they all disappear without a trace.

Then the exalted who had been delayed into teleporting arrives, only to be slammed violently against the nearest wall by Izuna's secret arts! As it recoils from the impact, squealing in pain, the monster seems to notice all of its allies are gone or down, and then pops out from the cavern again, although as with the others, Serafina can't sense they're coming anywhere near you anymore.

The invisible flame-pixie cheers in triumph.

"Hooray! Take that, you lousy abominations!"

She flies around the cavern, documenting what needs to be burned cleansed by pure fire.

Then she comes to the warlord.

"So, we can't just leave this thing here. But where did he come from? How did he get here and taint the surrounding area, including the water supply? Speaking of which, we may want to see what we can use to convince the townsfolk of what was the cause of their spoiled lands and water, without risking the spread of their corruption. Their opinion doesn't really matter, but I still think they deserve to know."

Directed by Nina, Serafina and Izuna proceed to properly cleanse the surrounding caverns out of all traces of taint with their mystic flames over the next hours. Intense smoke fills the air of the tunnels, sending most of the remaining azanídeos scurrying away in fear of your advance, in particular as you come out from their supposed center of power. The party can hear their screams echo across the stone walls as the panicked runaways are eventually caught by ambushes of the other creatures living underground when they eventually reach their areas. Some azanídeos turn and try to charge back at you, but their attempts are pathetic at best, as they're now leaderless and scattered. The ones that aren't burned to ashes right away by your fires are killed by your blades or more exotic weaponry, not even slowing down your purging of the area.

(click to show/hide)

Finally after a long day of work Nina can now feel the area has been almost properly purged as you emerge out in the open again and can see the sun is setting... But Nina can sense now the village itself is also tainted. With a much smaller intensity than the caverns, but bad enough that will surely fester and grow worse if no measures are taken. Not to mention the villagers who may themselves be tainted also need to be adressed.

Several of said villagers are now in the outskirts of the decayed buildings, observing the giant plumes of smoke coming out from the mountain under which you were working. They mumble between each other, clearly eager for an explanation of what happened, but not daring to directly ask you.

The ghost centaurs point their hands towards you, in strange movements that seem to simultaneously be instantenous and take an eternity to complete. From their fingerprints are unleashed blasts of white warping energy at Tsukyio and Steyven! The goddess manages to dodge in time, but the warrior is hit directly on the chest and suddenly feels like it's been years since he rested or ate anything. Everything around him seems to start going faster, much faster.

"Let's make a flower bloom on this desert."

The hooded figure touches the ground and three magic circles appear around him, each one sprouting a tiny closed white lotus floating in the air that quickly grow until each is as big as him, then their petals open revealing black cores filled with runes. Each lotus slowly turns towards a party member,  Tsukyio, Bob and Nina and the runes start glowing brighter. Nothing happens right away, and you feel like you could easily outrun the flower's movements if you moved.

"By the constellation of eleven star swords I shall smite you!"

Not yet finished, the hooded figure raises his arms and from his sleeves fly out eleven blades covered in bright golden energy that fly above in elaborate and elegant arcs before descending upon the party members! Most fail to land a clean hit, but five do hit, and on impact their energy sears your being before solidifying in golden translucent chains attempting to bind you to the ground, besides Steyven who succeeded on defending against all the blades.

Bob feels his perception of time starting to sloooowww dddddooooowwwwwnnnnnn...

The lesser phanes turn and start flying away from Tsukyio's glare. Even the Hooded Figure seems to hesitate a moment when the goddess stares directly at them, although they hold their ground.

Why? Why had you to come here so soon? Why must you damn moon deities always meddle in this land's affairs?

Serafina's arrow flies true towards the hooded figure and hits them in the shoulder. They seem to go drowsy for a moment, but then it waves its hand and golden runes form around the arrow's shaft and  extend towards the trail of sparks behind it, reaching Serafina in the blink of an eye and searing her!

Nina and Tsukyio see the flowers petals open completely before the runes condense in lances of light that shot towards them. A third such projectile flies through the position where Bob had been moments before. The flowers start flying upwards as new runes start forming on their cores, aligning themselves with their  previous targets.

You! Do you really know what the taint your godling called you to fight against even is? How do you know it to be the full extent of the truth?

The hooded figure disappears in a golden flash, and in the next they're right next to Bob, procceeding to violently headbutt him!

But there is hope for you yet! You only need to tell me everything you observed down there and I'll let you live!

Not finished yet, the hooded figures waves their hands in circles, projecting strands of white runes that surround Tsukyio, Steyven and Nina, forming cylinders 60 feet high and 30 feet wide with them in the middle. The runes start glowing brighter and brighter...

The creature violently headbutts Bob in the chest but instead hits some kind of barrier so he's able to step back and summon a rod of fire to thrust at the creature.

Meanwhile, Bob's healing spell continues to aid Steyven. "Thanks for the wall" Bob says to the new stranger he hasn't quite met yet.

Steyven says in a terribly menacing voice "You are a fool for fighting us, if you also fight the taint. Surrender and join with us!"

Cute. You would only get in my way, and end as taint's plaything, so it's you who should give up, boy.

Your opponent proves too stubborn to comply.

Serafina is doubtful that such a rude interloper would merely leave them all alone if they just reported on what they saw, but if there's a chance that they could get a reprieve from the assault, it might be worth it... But could they trust this person?

Your opponent pauses their assault, although he clearly seems ready to resume at a moment's notice.

I'm listening.

Serafina feels like their offer is honest.

The rest of the party hears Tsukiyo, speaking directly to them--"As things stand, I doubt that we can stop this opponent in a fight. I will explain properly once we are free from here--move closer and prepare to touch me in case they show signs of aggression."

Serafina flies over to Tsukiyo, shrinking down in size as she moves. Though otherwise invisible, Tsukiyo's divine vision can see the pixie's subtly glowing form reducing in size by half as she flitters behind the deity, hiding behind her.

As Steyven spills out the details, the hooded figure slowly relaxes their stance and even inquires after some bits:

This experiment was another failure then, but seems like you managed to stop it before things got too much out of control, and for that you have my gratitude. If you would wish to talk to me again, meet me in one week at Grayridge's arena.

Then there's a flash of cold white light and the hooded figure is gone, although the sand where they were stading has somehow frozen, and on top of the ice float five diamonds that seem to faintly glow even under the sun.

"A strange mystery person with tendencies towards both defeating Taint, like us, and attempted murdering of any others that share their goal. Is that what a hero complex is? Or just selfishness?" the child muses aloud with a very strange selection of words as she approaches the diamonds left behind to inspect them for any obvious danger.

Dropping her invisibility, Serafina flutters over to the congregating group.

"I think that must have been one of the people who experimented on those... creatures, from the caves. He seemed like Magedom, and with Tsukiyo's description earlier... I don't know. Damn this tainted world, to be made so complicated. Simple, beautiful flame I understand, this... This keeps getting more and more twisted up!"

The pixie crosses her arms and bunches her face up in consternation.

The diamonds look valuable and also to pulsate with some faint magic power, but not dangerous, at least not now.

Bob feels like the diamonds have strong magic. They could be easily sold for 10 000 gold each to your average merchant, but they may also be fused with a weapon or armor as a move action to increase their enhancement bonus by 1, up to +3. With 8 hours of meditation with the equipment the enhancement bonus may even be converted to a special ability of your choice while the diamond is fused. Whoever made them clearly put a lot of work and care on such items.
