Robert gives the newcomers a polite nod. "Robert Jenkins," he says, finally taking Eric's proffered hand and shaking it. "And perhaps the proper way to induct these gentlemen into our little dinner society would be to go on another camping trip? Or, barring that, a more thorough introduction from the start?" He tips Constable Jones a pointed look.
At the mention of his name, Will gives both Jimmy and Eric a nod. He turns to Jones and in a soft voice, though still audible by the rest of the room, he tells Jones: "So... we're picking up stray dogs now? How will this help our cause? We're in enough trouble as it is. Do you even KNOW who they are, what they can do, who they work for?"
"Are we leaving town, or something? I heard Robert make mention of a 'camping trip', or something.
Who is after us (other than everyone we're not supposed to be talking to)?"
Jim shrugs, resigned to tell his story again. "I heard a scuffle so I went to see what was going on. A big smelly fisherman, strong as a bull, took down two thugs and told me he'd pay me to find Thomas Martin. He told me not to let the 'wrong people' find out. As the law is always the wrong people this guy is going to try to rip my head off. I was supposed to talk to my landlord when I found out more. I didn't break any law, I didn't do anything wrong!"
"You think he's still there? Waiting for Mr. Martin?
And what do you mean by 'what you met', and not who you met?"
"Or rather, whatever's left of New York...
Jones, nothing could have survived whatever that blast was. We barely did, and we weren't that close. Nothing would be alive for a solid few miles around. Why would we even bother about checking the city?"
"I've killed men, and I can use guns. I'm best with these though." Jimmy slides his hands into his coat pockets and pulls them out wearing a pair of brass knuckles.
"You seem fairly well armed. Can you use them well enough?""Yes. I learned to hunt as a kid, both with a bow and a rifle. I'm also a bit of a duelist, and since I'm standing here today, I have a good track record.
Is Eric restricted in where he can go? Otherwise he might follow Mr. Jenkins since he's supposed to be helping him, anyway.
"Also if possible, someone work on translating that book we found tonight. At least enough to give us a title and some idea of what t contains.""What language is it in? I know French and Latin."
Robert arrives home late, explaining to his parents that he'll be going on another trip tomorrow. Before turning in, he reads through the book for a few hours.

Harry will probably take him around somewhere quiet to eat, keeping him out of the most public places if possible. We'll sleep at my home or at the library, based on convenience.
Jim goes home with his new 'friend', hoping that things get cleared up properly.
Assuming nothing happens, Will makes his way to his home above the cartographer's shop. If someone is heading the same way, I gladly walk with them.

Before turning in, he reads through the book for a few hours. If the books are in English, Latin, or French, Eric will help read, too. If not, he'll stay quiet and not pester Robert, although he may chat with his parents depending on how late it is and how much they like company.[/s]Oops. Forgot I was with Harry and not Robert.
"Get ready; we're heading to the library once prepared."Eric Shaves one last time before leaving.
"So gentlemen, do we pass through Valley Forge again on the way to our destination? Or do we make camp in the woods or occasional way station? There are possible disadvantages to each...""I don't know enough of the area to have a preference."
"Second, and more important, it seems the wildlife is more aware of our enemies than we are; if the woods go silent, we will know to be cautious.""Good point. I've been traveling recently anyway, so I don't mind the woods."

"I don't suppose anyone thought to bring a butterfly net?" Robert pauses thoughtfully, rummaging in his pack and producing a crossbow bolt. "Did you want to keep this thing alive for study, or can we pin it up?"
"In that case... Eric, you claim to be a good marksman? Let's see what you're worth.""Fair enough. Looks like we're... pinning it?"
"Sorry guys."
Mutters: "Goddammit."
If the arrow isn't too far away, Eric retrieves it. Otherwise, he just leaves.
"Wait. I thought this was a bad idea, and people were stupid to think they could control it."
Will stares silently at Jones until he finally speaks up. "Pardon me Jones, but are you INSANE?! I've seen enough proof as it is and now you're suggesting we call upon one of those freaks? If you really plan on doing this, you already have your corpse for the only way for you to get through with this is over my dead body!"(click to show/hide)

Since he doesn't want his catspaw being eaten, we will not have to worry about the local infestation after this evening.""What? I'm assuming you mean the bugs are gone, but what's that part about his catspaw?"

Harry gapes at Jones. "How the hell does he ensure that?"
Unsure of exactly what to think of Jones anymore - his image of the man had changed so much over the past few days - Harry helps him build a fire. As he works, he whispers, "Jones... you know, we're becoming more accustomed to these horrors. I think I may be going mad, but at least I've been exposed to these.... things. You and I should talk. About learning what's necessary; I'm quite studious. And taking off some of the strain would keep you around longer.
I wont lie Jones, I never particularly cared for you, but I don't have any intention of just letting you die from this crap. Next time something calls, I'm coming out with you, one way or another." At this point, Harry shut himself up, realizing he was rambling. His head was still whirling...
"Fair enough. I'll go first, if no one objects."

"Which approach should we take? My time in the military unfortunately left me ill prepared for such judgements.""Not necessarily. Maybe you have an idea what either of them would be doing in this situation, so we can avoid them."
by what direction do you wish to enter the city?"I'd suggest entering with the wind at our backs, if possible to hopefully keep the smoke away as best as possible, but we'll have to be careful not to get trapped by a fire."

Will nods at Harry. "Sounds like a plan, let's do this!" He gestures the group to follow.

"Insane and melted? Sounds like a potential effect of the blast, but why this late with the chaos? There has to be something behind it. Did you see if they're travelling spread out, or could we slip around them?""They seem pretty tough; it takes more than one shot to drop them. As of now, they slightly outnumber the British.

Jimmy goes back to the flophouse where he was staying when he met the 'boss'. He wants to talk to the owner and maybe get some information out of him.
Robert leans back in his chair, running his hands through his hair in exhaustion. "Let's wait for him to get back. There's a good chance he knows most of this already."
A stonefaced and pale Jones returns with an obviously upset Eric.Actually, by this point, Eric would look relatively calm. If anything, more relaxed than normal.
"Our new friends...servitude problem is over. And we need to talk."
Harry looks up from his reading, looking less than surprised that a talk was needed. "And what horrors can we expect this time?"
Jimmy smiles menacingly. "My boss wants me to find Mr. Martin. Do you know anything?"

Eric says nothing at his comment, but looks to Harry, raises his eyebrows and nods in astonished agreement.Harry looks up from his reading, looking less than surprised that a talk was needed. "And what horrors can we expect this time?"
"I've just shot someone in the head. I believe the stress is getting to me."
The book drops with Harry's jaw. It's hard to say which made the louder thud when it hit the desk. "What in the world did you do that for? Who did you shoot?""The person who claimed to... own me. He became belligerent and... was shot for his troubles. Although it was a much quicker resolution than I had expected."
Jimmy leans in menacingly. "Then tell me what you know about the man who hired me."
The book drops with Harry's jaw. It's hard to say which made the louder thud when it hit the desk. "What in the world did you do that for? Who did you shoot?"
Will hugs his mother and gives his father a firm handshake, a usual routine in the household. "No need to be worried, I'm fine as always. I'm even starting to regain some of my memories." <<Joined by terrible headaches>> He throws them a smile, hoping they won't ask about what those memories are. "If those rumours tell we lost New York, they are true. It's been set aflame during the conflict. Our next mission will be to visit nearby settlements. Do you happen to possess a detailed up to date map of the area, including all nearby villages and their cultures?" As he converses with his father, he is storing the maps that are no longer needed.
"You're being decidedly unhelpful. Why is that?"
"What others?"
Harry, who had been sitting straight as a post, allowed himself to fall back in his chair, though he still had a look of vague confusion. "Well, I'm glad you wont be in trouble, and at least he's out of the picture, but maybe you should stay here and let me investigate for a bit, Jones. You're been under too much physical and mental torment the past while. You've taken it harder than any of us. If there is something only you can do, teach me to do it, but I'm going to insist you not go out.
Now sit. Robert and I can tell you what we know about this book..."
Jimmy grins. "Point me in the direction of one and I won't bother you again."
Will stowes the cylinder containing the fresh maps in his bag. He says his parents goodbye once more, but adds "By the way, do you remember Thomas Martin, the church's sculptor? Have you seen him or heard of him the last couple of weeks?"
Jimmy kicks him, but not too hard. "Wake up, I'm not done with you!"
"From what we've been able to translate, the author believes that he has been...transmuted, perhaps, into an unnatural state. That is to say, he believes that humanity is unnatural or corrupt in some fashion, and he wishes to be like the outsiders who are coming into this world."
He pulls up an eyebrow. "Really? What do you know of them?"
"Then are the returning Petitioners actually the people who left, or are they Outsiders in disguise?"
Jimmy thinks quickly, his reason warring with his anger. Reason wins out, he needs information badly and his newfound relationship with the Sheriff won't be helped by murdering someone. Jimmy picks him up as gently as he can and rushes to the doctor hoping he's still home.
"They are extensions of the enemy. Or servants perhaps. They will not retain human memories for the most part, and will imitate us at best only clumsily. They will be predators of our kind.""So, if we encounter someone we don't know, if we talk to them long enough, we're likely to see through their ruse?"

They will be predators of our kind.""So, if we encounter someone we don't know, if we talk to them long enough, we're likely to see through their ruse?"
"Any idea who might have done this?" Jimmy asks.
Jimmy shakes his head. "I hit him once for not telling me what I need to know. The rest of this? That was probably caused by other people that needed the same information and have less self-restraint than me."http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/rascal
"Are they like the black thing we killed, the one that melted? Could it be the strong one who is Jimmy's Boss? How much like us do they look, and can we turn them normal? I hate to say it, but I'd love to know how to weaken or kill them."
Harry pondered on this, nodding for a bit. "Alright then, so they're monstrous, and different than we have seen thus far. That sounds absolutely appetizing. Still, how strong should we expect them to be, and will they die if we shoot them in the head?"
"Any idea where I might find them?"
"So how are we supposed to...handle Professor Cannon if a direct conflict is dangerous? I would suggest luring him into overextending his powers, but the possible consequences are undesirable." Robert tilts his head to one side thoughtfully. "We could always fill his basement with gunpowder.""I like that second idea a lot more. Can he be hurt by bullets? We've got guns. It just seems a solid distance and some cover would be prudent."
Is there anything anyone needs done?""Before all this happened, I was just passing through. Recent events have put my plans of drunken debauchery on hold."
