What was the joke about catgirls and D&D physics again?  :smirk easiest kill in the arena.

Anyway, for such cuteness, I'll kill you last if you stay out my way.
Also, am I the only one really worried about the empty pedestal?

Only if you care to give away what character is yours. It's a small advantage, and it will go away the second the field goes down, but whatever floats your boat.

Actually, I'm freaking out about the empty pedestal right now. After that, the kobold is the main threat, followed by wob nair.
Of course, I definitely don't need to worry about the spider.

Can we get a list of who the players are in this game?  Clearly we have:

sirp
shiki
impk

It seems there are 11 of us, unless one or more of them are NPCs.  Who else is involved?

Well, what if it's just literally an empty platform? The Wizard could be messing with everyone. He seems the sort for psychological games.

No, he wants a proper fight. His goal is to see who is best at fighting, not play petty tricks on us.

I think it's a pixie.
If that's the case, we'll see him when the AMF's turn on. However, I doubt 4 LA would be a good idea in this game, considering that the DR 10 is far less valuable than normal.

Pity my character can talk. What I wouldn't give to say "kill, maim, destroy" at this point.

Curse my lack of automatic and bonus languages... Wait, what happens if your Int bonus is higher than your number of bonus languages? I might be able to get common, if overflow bonus languages can be (any).

Will we have any kind of indication that there's an AMF active or do the characters have to figure that out themselves by noticing that some of their abilities don't work?

If you want to get technical about things, the PHB/SRD states that all characters know common (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/races.htm#raceAndLanguages)

Quote from: SRD>Races
Race And Languages

All characters know how to speak Common. A dwarf, elf, gnome, half-elf, half-orc, or halfling also speaks a racial language, as appropriate. A character who has an Intelligence bonus at 1st level speaks other languages as well, one extra language per point of Intelligence bonus as a starting character.

It's probably an oversight of the people writing the PHB, assuming everyone would be playing one of the races in that book, but there are rules to support you at least knowing Common, if you want them.

It's basically going to be crackling obvious magick draining purle lightning or something similar. I know AMF's don't destroy a wall of force, but meh. Epic level wizard does what he wants. :smirk

Let's play a game called reach into the pile of treasure without 'finding' the spider. Wouldn't it be terrible if you put some armor on with the spider inside? Considering my character can actually fit in pockets, I wouldn't count on finding him before he's out of the AMF's LoE, and I'd hate to know what nasty presents he'll leave from the pile o' loot.

Thanks. :lol I've actually been second guessing myself. I didn't really have time to make a new character from scratch, and so recycled one that I'd made for an old game, but never got to use. It's heavily based on one of VennDygrem's old characters that he played in a (brief) PbP we were both PCs in, in fact. ;)

Now I'm wishing I'd made use of some of the following (maybe in combination):

1) A paladin with the weird substitution level that basically gives him a dragonborn horse mount.
2) A soulbow with the Wild Cohort feat (and some kind of flying animal cohort).
3) Something with Vow of Poverty.

I had also considered making some kind of soulbow.

I'm interested in seeing how this goes. I'll be happy to make it of the starting area alive.

Wait for your turn order, and post it in the thread. Once you leave the clearing, switch to PM's.  Oh, 40 feet.

Going to post this for our reference, from the recruitment thread:

Quote from: Wrex
It's a move action to grab "Something useful' - something good for you, but random. It takes a full round action to find something more specific, like a sword, with a stiff notice check required to find something even more specific, like "A +1 eager  consumptive sword". If you have two minutes, you can take twenty.

And how far is it from the pedestals to the edge of the clearing?

How high are the pedestals?

Only about ten feet, the AM field stops at the pedestals.

Roughly seven feet

and about fifteen feet wide.

You could roll for damage even before knowing if the attacks hit, you would just ignore the damage rolls if they didn't. Or you could roll the damage in a new post. You are allowed to make multiple posts, so don't edit.

I tried rolling 1d3+3d6+6 and the roller interpreted it as 1d3+3, so a corrected roll is in the next post.

Badly injured and lying on the ground next to the whale-man, the winged woman rapidly rolled away a couple meters on her side (Tumble check (1d20+3=22) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3562564/)), escaping (safely) her assailant. Now on her knees and more or less free, she flew upward as high as she could.

I'm pretty certain you can't tumble while prone. Even if its possible, there would be a -10 on the check just to move 5 feet.

Quote from: srd
Crawling
You can crawl 5 feet as a move action. Crawling incurs attacks of opportunity from any attackers who threaten you at any point of your crawl.
Quote from: srd
Prone
The character is on the ground. An attacker who is prone has a -4 penalty on melee attack rolls and cannot use a ranged weapon (except for a crossbow). A defender who is prone gains a +4 bonus to Armor Class against ranged attacks, but takes a -4 penalty to AC against melee attacks.

Standing up is a move-equivalent action that provokes an attack of opportunity.

Sorry to go all rules lawyer. But since this is all player-versus-player, a laissez faire interpretation of the rules is likely to be problematic. On that point, the extra attack for a successful trip with the Improved Trip feat got skipped. Since I already previewed this post I'll roll in the next one. And again, sorry for piling on more misery Shiki

The forgotten hit is all good, but it doesn't say in the prone condition's description that these are the only move actions possible while prone, neither does it say in the description of the tumble skill that you can't use the skill while prone. I'm not sure how you came up with a -10 mod to tumble also.

Tumble says you can do it as part of normal movement. Crawling isn't normal movement.
On the other hand, it says you can take -10 to Tumble at your full speed, which is quicker than normal, so... it can both ways. But "crawling isn't normal movement" is more reasonable, IMO.

If you put any weight in the Rules of the Game articles (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040622a) at all...

I guess that makes that Rules of the Game article the primary source here.
If memory serves, the 16 implied all D&D 3.5 was allowed, meaning that article is probably fine.

Also, regarding crawling =/= normal movement, normal movement is never defined, and could even be considered any use of a move action.
Title: Re: the OOC and general Q&A thread!

I would assume that since crawling gets its own subsection under Move actions, that it does not count as "normal movement."

Besides, even if you tumble 5 feet, that doesn't put you out of reach of something with a 10-ft reach, unless you tumble a second time and by then you're out of actions and all you did was roll a few feet away.

It does if they only moved to just within reach when they went to hit. I think whaleman wanted to avoid the AoO from tripping, and moved to just close enough for him to hit.

So, Whaleman get's the extra attack rolled above, and if Wob Niar survives, they get away?

(click to show/hide)
Also, I'm noting seeing enough rolls in the trip section for a trip. There should be 1 touch attack to start the trip, and one str check from each.
although the whale guy gets Str + 8 and wob niar only gets Str, wobniar still has a chance of resisting.

Hmm, there are definitely more angels to consider on this than I had thought. 5' would be enough to get her out of range, since it was only because of reach that my character was able to hit Shiki's without charging.

Generally I think that the Rules of the Game articles are a useful and relevant addition to the game. But I don't see where Skip came up with the tumble DC as being 20 rather than 25. Even if we assume that crawling is 'normal' movement (IMO there are merits to both arguments), crawling speed is 5'. And accelerated tumbling, full rather than half available speed, incurs a -10 not -5 penalty.

Whaleman should get a hit in anyway though, considering I dun fucked up and forgot he had improved trip. Fuck you sleep deprevation! :shakefist
Does this refer to the attack already rolled or an AoO from moving while prone? The ruling going my way is one thing. But I don't think it would be fair to Shiki to get an extra attack just because the bonus attack earlier was skipped. There should at least be the opportunity to revise actions.

I had assumed that the 1d20+3 total 11 was wob niar's str check, which my character beats on a 1. But I'll roll just in case.
Rolled 1d20+16 : 6 + 16, total 22

I can't find a ruling one way or another. I'd say that it depends on flight maneuverability. If it can fly up at any angle, take off from prone should be fine. If they need forward speed, it makes sense for them to need to stand first.

All good questions I don't have the answer to, I'm afraid. Time to troll teh interwebs?
Rules Compendium says nothing, Players handbook says nothing, DMG says Nothing.

I'd suggest that good and perfect maneuverability allow one to fly from prone, by way of extending the minimum distance flying level before gaining altitude to all forms of movement. Only way I can think of the draws on the rules somewhat.

You're playing the ooze, though.

I notice Ajith might well be more successful if I didn't play him in character. He's not stupid; it's just that he's got things he prioritizes over winning.

I figured that whale was not the best target, but Ajith doesn't care, he wants whale hurt first anyhow.

For that matter, starting a two-man alliance against a group of five people the same level is not the action of someone who cares much about not getting hurt.

Here is what I do: I go here (http://www.angelfire.com/rpg2/dungeonsunlimited/), find a map that is reasonably close to what I want, and then draw a grid on it. Then I put down single letters for peoples' names. Like this (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=5294.0). It's pretty quick and easy, but works well enough.

Sometimes I copy and paste pieces of the map over other parts, to change it up a bit, if I can't find one exactly like what I want.

Title: Re: the OOC and general Q&A thread!
Post by: VennDygrem on July 08, 2012, 09:39:15 AM
It's not technically the same as grappling. When I engulf, my targets get trapped in my body and are treated as being grappled. Normally you're limited in how many creatures you can actively grapple because you normally have only two limbs to use to hold the grapple (in the case of some creatures with improved grab, they can use each limb on a separate grapple, though usually at a penalty). In this case, I'm not using any limbs for the grapple. As long as I have space in my body (enough for one large creature or four medium or small creatures, I should be able to engulf targets.

However, I have noticed a rule in engulf that stipulates that I cannot make a slam attack in a round in which I attempt to engulf. Technically, I think that means I can not make the grapple check to deal damage, so all I can do is get right up next to the hunter. I'll change my actions to reflect that.
