Other Games / Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition
« on: May 12, 2019, 02:38:36 AM »
I just realized that Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition came out last year (basically a reboot of the 2002 BioWare game based on D&D 3rd edition).

For those that are not familiar, it has a pretty decent re-creation of 3rd edition rules, converted to real-time (with pause) and a decent but not extensive(it doesn't have every splatbook like we're used to) list of classes, prestige classes and feats to scratch that minmax itch.

The main limitation I've found, is that you can only pick 3 classes (including prestige); but, that still leaves quite a bit of wiggle room.  It's also refreshing to see the imbalance preserved, you could play a monk with your CHA maxed out and pick toughness every time... if you really wanted to.

I've been looking through recent character build threads and it's nice to see new 3e players running around.

General D&D Discussion / looking for the most extensive random tables
« on: October 22, 2017, 05:37:30 AM »
I'm making something ridiculous and looking for the most extensive random tables, don't care which system (anything from D&D to pathfinder, OSRIC or whatever), I also don't care whether it's cannon, home-brew, 3rd party or "licensed official content", books or websites.

Looking for everything random: encounters, NPCs, villages, dungeons, story plots, items, etc. everything.

I know that most DM/GM guides are going to have a lot of tables, and the complete list would be ridiculous, but which ones really went crazy overboard with the random tables?

Edit: Apparently, there's a whole subreddit for that called BehindTheTables they have a TON of random tables.

How would you guys stat out the Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant from adventure time?

For the 3rd arbitrarily reoccurring CO challenge Break this houserule, as the title suggests, levels of bloodline from UA and/or LA from templates can be bought off with fighter feats(as if using LA buyoff).

Other classes that get bonus feats off of the fighter list, or 'as a fighter' can use this option as well. (feat rogue, etc...)

For example, a first level fighter can use it's first bonus fighter feat to get LA+1 for free(from a template or race), she may then gain an additional +1 LA(or a bloodline level) for free if she choses to use her 2nd level fighter bonus feat(at second level).

Using this ability does not raise the characters ecl.

Using this ability does not waive any additional requirements for templates.

This rule could also be easily written as a feat which would simply be added to the list that a fighter can choose from.  I'm feeling too lazy to type up right now, feel free to do so if you feel so inclined.  Or I will do it later.

5
The rules: (These will be spoilered for future challenges)
1:  No points are given to trolls
2:  This contest is open indefinitely, thread necros are encouraged
3:  Builds are judged on Creativity, Borkedness, Rules-Clarity, Something Else
(click to show/hide)
4:  Everyone is a judge, go nuts.

For the first arbitrarily reoccurring CO challenge Break this houserule, all partial progression PrCs are now full progression PrCs.  This includes spell casting, manifesting, binding, incarnum, shadowcasting infusions and the like.

For example, Green Star Adept10 would progress casting by 10 levels instead of 5.
Thrallherd10 would increase manifesting by 10 instead of 8.
True Necromancer would give full arcane divine progression.

So are  there any badass builds that can survive and thrive in Gish city'?
Any PrCs that suddenly become playable? What borkedness do I need  to watch for if I implement this house rule?

You Break it You Buy it / another Thrallherd ass pull?
« on: June 17, 2013, 02:09:48 AM »
So lets say a Thrallherd gets himself an Artificer thrall, that thrall has rending Retain Essence (as all artificers do).

Are there any rules that would allow said thrall to break down those annoying believers (or their guaranteed possessions) for xp?

I mean warforged were crafted at some point in a creation forge..
EDIT: The relevant text here under fair use:
Quote
The artificer must spend a day with the item, and he must also have the
appropriate item creation feat for the item he is salvaging.
After one day, the item is destroyed and the artificer adds
the XP it took to create the item to his craft reserve.
Since there is no item creation feat for making new warforged, the thrall can't break them down.

Maybe grafts could work, or something that boosts a monks unarmed strike (and is poorly worded).

Remember that a Thrallherd can only decide his believers race and class

EDIT: Perhaps a race or class that specifically comes with something, like a liches phylactery, or an erudites psicrystal

EDIT: edited b/c I was AFB when I posted this

Aha! Legacy champion: "Must possess a legacy item" is a prereq, so we are guaranteed to have Retain Essence fodder for the artificer, though we may have to wait until the second thrall or have the main PC be an arty himself....

Anything better out there?

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / Is my Monk Tier 3 yet?
« on: June 27, 2012, 05:22:36 AM »
As the title says... two quick modifications to the Monk base class.

Flurry of blows is a swift action.  (Because Monks are so fast!)

Mind Over Matter (Ex):  Through rigorous training, both physical and mental, a Monk's body and mind become unified as she gains levels.  At each level, beginning at first, a Monk's ability scores each increase by one.  For example a first level Monk would have +1 to Str, Dex, Cha, Con, Wis and Int.  A 20th level Monk would have each ability score increased by 20.  This is not a bonus; but, a change of the ability scores.

So, a first level Monk with starting abilities of all 10's would gain the +1 bonus at first and have all 11's.  By the time the she gets to Monk 20, her stats are all 30's.

This should make it much easier for any given Monk to hit, make saves, have skills, grapple etc.... all the kinds of things that a Monk wants to do.  Shooting for Tier 3 here, am I there?

Min/Max 3.x / race + feat for fly and burrow?
« on: May 20, 2012, 06:52:41 AM »
I'm looking for a +0LA race and or feat(s) that will give me decent fly and burrow speeds in e6.

Two flaws, class levels are already decided.  (Not a caster)

Anything come to mind?

VATES

"I assure you, that your submission shall be to the benefit of all."
             - Kudzu, Elder Vates of the Blacktree Clan

Manipulative, calculating, philosophers of nature, Vates often live among Druidic societies, performing dark rituals of sacrifice for the benefit of the community.  Having wildly varying ideas of what Nature itself consists of, individual Vates are not always accepted by Druid Orders.  If a particular Vates is not accepted, she will often go off and attempt to start a new Order; a, "Naturally Righteous" Order.  Vates will stop at nothing to pass on their traditions, even going so far as to Rebuke a group of animals or humanoids and force them to participate in the ancient rituals.  These acts are committed only in desperation; because, each Vates knows that their version of sacrifice is the "correct" way to venerate Nature.

MAKING A Vates

 Starting Age: As Druid

You Break it You Buy it / The Emperor Redux
« on: April 01, 2012, 01:55:17 AM »
(Takes Item Familiar, to get enough xp for 3 more class levels)

                (xp == 9th level Character, ecl 1)
                                                       |
                                                       v
Binder1, (All 36 Major Bloodline Levels),   Ardent1, Wizard 4, Changeling Wizard 5th substitution level, Ghost 2, Master of the Unseen Hand 4, Thrallherd1, (Arcane)Swordsage1

Fragile at low levels, but at the end;

[If Bloodlines stack with each other, b/c they are "Bloodline Class Levels" that specifically stack with other "Classes"]
EBL = 1 + 36 + (33 * 12 [BL's adding to each other]) = 433
ML = (1Ardent + 36 + (33 * 12 [BL's adding to each other])) = 433

IL = 1 + 18 + (33 * 6 [BL's adding half to each other])) + 7[Half of remaining class levels]= 224
                                    (198)
Telekinesis CL = 12(Ghost) + 4(MotUH) + 36 + (33 * 12 [BL's adding to each other]) = 448
Telekinesis BaB = CL(448) + CHA mod
Telekinesis Full attack = +448/+443/+438/+433

The Emperor chooses Telekinesis from Ghost
Shards of Leadership (except uses Thrallherd to kick it off) for every Power and (Arcane(which includes Arcane versions of Divine spells))Spell as a Power
Is Shapechanged all the time as a Maneuver

Alternating Thralls with levels in Planar Shepherd and Hierophant or Cleric and Hierophant provide tons of wildshape and Turn/Rebuke uses

A Thrall with 36 Bloodline Levels and 6 levels of Fiend of Possession could bestow powers on an item with a value as an enhancement bonus equal to its class level, so a
6 + 36 + (33*12) = a +438 weapon for you to use with your insane Telekinesis CL!

This doesn't even account for the extra xp from having a lower ecl (2 at party level 10 for example) after taking all of the Bloodline levels, so there are really more free levels to play with

Min/Max 3.x / Cheese + Great Cleave?
« on: March 31, 2012, 03:37:41 PM »
[Thought exercise, all official books/web enhancements allowed]

I've been playing Neverwinter Nights and Great Cleave is working out well with my cheaty-faced, 50's-in-all-stats monk build that I made for a speed run. (monk is only for the speed boost) He just runs up to a group of monsters and one hit kills everything within reach.

So, my question is, how can I get this kind of efficiency out of Great Cleave in a pnp game?  I'm thinking a Hood, flyby attack, or Ghost, and some kind of reach weapon?

What would you guys recommend?  I don't usually play melee types except for Wildshape.

Min/Max 3.x / Triple Gestalt Binder // DFA //??
« on: February 18, 2012, 12:31:24 PM »
Just like the title says: building a triple gestalt character, level 1 to 15ish probably, 32 point buy, all official 3.5 & web enhancements,

Other party members 2 -4
One was talking about cleric//full BaB stuff
another said either beguiler//something or wizard//rouge, skills, SA & skirmish stuff
the other two idk or if they will even play

My character concept is that he thinks he is superior and uses others for his gain
So far Kalashtar BinderX,KoSS5, thrallherd1//DFA

I would really like to have something similar to ghost4's malevolence or Fiend of Possession instead of DFA but I doubt it would get approved

Ok, two players dropped out and the DM wants to "experiment" we now have three in the party, triple gestalt(three classes instead of gestalt's two), tier 3 and below base classes only, no multiclassing within a "side" so that "we don't get confused"

Any ideas for the third class?

Gaming Advice / Option of 2d10 or d20
« on: January 05, 2012, 10:19:44 PM »
Thinking of adding a house rule of letting players choose to roll 2d10 or d20 whenever they would normally roll a d20.

Is this the best of both worlds(well, for those players that figure it out), or a terrible idea that will only make casters even stronger.

To clarify, rolling two tens or two ones would be required for critical or auto fail.

now I can drop 2d10's to minimize critical one hit killing party members, or use the d20 for tough DC's

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Magic vs Mundane: Third Wheel Solution?
« on: December 21, 2011, 05:47:24 AM »
Most everyone is aware of the Magic vs Mundane problem that boils down to the mundanes losing, in a big way, repeatedly, in the alley.

Now that being said, I'm not looking for 50 pages of flame war about whether mundanes can hold their own against casters.

I'm looking for a character that consistently hoses casters, yet has serious trouble with the mundane(melee, ranged, sneaky etc...) guys.

All books, editions, third party, ad-hoc-homebrew available(if needed).  Self-nerfing and liberal TO, in order to reach this goal, are allowed.

Here's my first crack at it:
Cloistered DMM cleric that is focused highly on anti-magic and counterspelling.  His custom domain(not_real) allows him to counter a spell of the same level spontaneously instead of the cure/inflict line, and turn undead is now rebuke spell(and possibly rebuke spell-like/su-ability later?).  This allows some kind of DC to decide whether he now makes all decisions regarding the rebuked spell(including dismissing and/or controlling minions).
He also never prepares any spell that is a combat buff, bfc, or healing/direct damage, or grants a minion that is not in the anti-magic spirit of the character.

Yes, it includes a lot of homebrew, but it serves as an example of concept.
Bonus points if you can solve this without homebrew.

Basically, I want a character that kills tippy wizard(angel summoner) and gets killed by fighter20(bmx bandit) most every time.  A kind of rock paper scissors if you will.

Also, is this topic worth pursuing?  If such a character was made, would it matter?

Gaming Advice / D&D 5th Edition
« on: November 24, 2011, 01:57:56 AM »
Well it's mostly self explanetory, tell us why you chose.

Your vote can be changed, so you can think on it.

Edit: slightly changed the options:
Grognars, please correct me if I messed up the earlier editions...

17
As the title states, could a Planar Shepherd choose his own(through epic/arcane heirophant/gestalt etc...) or the party Wizards custom demi-plane for insane time tricks? (Planar bubble)

If so that's an arbitrary number of actions each round inside the planar bubble...
