Min/Max 3.x / Re: Pimp my Gish

Aw,dang, I'm sorry, guys! I forgot to mention that I'm limited to non-setting sources, and Dragon Magazine is allowed on a case-by-case basis. Incantatrix and Alternative Spell Source are out.

RobbyPants brought up something I hadn't realized about the BAB, so I decided to go cloistered cleric at level 1 to fill out the fractional BAB for CloiClrc 1/ Wizard 3/ Duskblade 2/ Spellsword 1/  Abjurant Champ 5. I'll tell you about my build so far, and I'd totally appreciate guidance about where to go after level 2!

I'm second level so far with Boccob as my deity. I traded the free cloistered Knowledge Domain for Knowledge Devotion, got back Knowledge Domain to get all Knowledge skills as class skills, and got the Planning Domain for free Extend Spell. For my lvl 1 feat, I took Persist Spell.

Now that it's second level, I can Persist 1 lvl 1 Cleric or Wizard spell with Illumian Naenhoon.

I chose to go with Abrupt Jaunt Conjurer Specialist. I'm trapped on an island, so there will be no shops or people to buy scrolls from for a long while.
My spells are:
animate rope
grease
expeditious retreat, swift
mage armor
magic missile
silent image
wall of smoke

I'm really proud of my build so far, and I'd totally appreciate input on where you think I should go from here based on the above!

(STR 18, DEX 17, CON 16, INT 18, WIS 14, CHA 16)

I gave up on getting Arcane Channeling from Duskblade levels until Epic.
Smiting Spell fills the flavor perfectly, but Arcane Thesis probably isnt the answer unless I use the same spell with it every time.

The only thing I really had in mind was that my stats can support some distressing MAD, and that made me think gish. A psionic gish could be cool, but you'd have to lay it all out for me--I've never had them in a game before!

Hey, everyone! I'm finally back to playing D&D after years and a half-dozen nonstarters, and this time I actually get to be the player!

I'd like to be a gish with as max BAB/spell levels as I can get. However, I also want to eek as much out of my classes as possible since multiclass penalties are in full swing (though this merely slows the pace. It's a solo campaign).

For flavor, I'd like to be a mighty caster who can slay opponents the good old caster way, but who can slam an opponent down in a few mighty blows with a bigass weapon when they step too close, but I don't want to be a one-trick pony in service of that second part if I can help it.
The sooner it comes online, the better.

Because of absurdly generous rolling procedures and colossal luck, my stats are
14, 16, 16, 17, 18, 18

My thoughts so far are: wizard 1/ duskblade 2/ wizard 2/ spellsword 1/ abjurant champion 5/ Eldritch Knight (or something) 9
That build by itself is so cookie-cutter, though, that I'm pressed to add more. I've considered dipping cloistered cleric at lvl 1 as an Illumian to get that sweet turn-based Persist for arcane, all knowledge skills as skills forever thanks to the knowledge Domain, and all those skill points in all those Knowledge skills for eventual Knowledge Devotion silliness.

But I'd also like to get lvl 9 wizard spells, Duskblade 3 for Arcane channeling, and the max # attacks from BAB by lvl 20.

Obviously, something's gotta give. I'm just not sure which direction to go! If I give up on Naenhoon:Persist or Knowledge Devotion, I don't even know what skills and feats I'd take!

Please help?

Certainly better than weapon specialization. A nice boost for crit-based STR fighters and barbarians. Depending on what your baseline of power is, though, I'm not entirely sure it's worth a feat. For some campaigns it might actually be a good alternate rule to be applied to all characters!

Pardon the thread necromancy.

I recently watched the Ben Drowned footage, but I doubt that's what you mean. It wasn't very frightening anyways...

That's the best analogy for a gaggle of dispersing young adults! Anyone in SoCal? That's where I am.

Glad to have you, Xyphis! My nephew lives in Chicago; I hear mixed reviews.

I'm actually interested in getting into cars. Where would an absolute newb look to get into something like that?

I hope I'm not interrupting your line of dice rolling here, but I had to drop in and say that Tenchu is the best series, and I'm glad to find a homeboy here n that regard. Yo.

Glad to have you, Akryea!

So, what's the setting/conflict of your gestalt game?

Hi! Welcome!

So, what are your homebrew systems like? I love reviewing interesting new mechanics!

I've always been a fan of the claymation-fighter perspective: you can get stabbed, sliced, and beaten, but your willpower/resolve/manliness makes you as clay, and organ damage really isn't so important in the long-run. I always figured the fact that the regeneration spell specifically calls out broken bones meant that hp loss just meant soft tissue damage, and the cure spells just sort of melt you back together (like clay) and fills in the missing parts.

I guess that's a problematic view, but I didn't even know about the Luck-based hp) until a few years ago, and that never rang true for me. It seems like a general inability to accept heroic characters.

Maybe it's because I grew up with adventure video games like Mario 64, God of War, and Soul Reaver where the cause of losing hit points was getting hit, and, in fact, not dodging.

Don't have many funds to dedicate to such a noble cause, so I only have:

Beast Wars (complete series)
Digimon Adventure 01
Avatar: The Last Airbender (complete)

Had I the funds, this list would be nigh interminable!

That reminds me of a swashbuckler rewrite I made.

Nobody critiqued it, but I believe it to be competently crafted.

Sonic Boom looks good now.

For 8th level, what about a passive ability like the Deathwatch spell within the radius of his blindsense that lets him hear the vitals of creatures?

What about a bonus to sense motive for hearing the pulse quicken or the breath grow subtly shallow?

Detect Thoughts x/day? Literally hearing what they are thinking...

Maybe they can hear their name called from any distance? Plus a short message or something.

Wouldn't Acoustic Engineer give a bonus or penalty to Move Silently instead of Hide?

I don't think it is particularly mechanically elegant for Sonic Boom to assume the target has Sonic Resistance = HD, because that makes a situation where outsiders and undead of the same CR have dramatic and unexplained difference in tolerance to sound (for outsiders tend to have few HD per CR, and undead have many HD per CR). Instead, I would say that the Sound Shaper's sonic attacks still deal half damage to creatures immune to sonic effects.

For Amplifier, does it work with Audiophile to allow the Sound Shaper to turn all evocation spells into force damage? if not, I think you should call that out specifically in addition to Energy Substitution. If it does, wow, that is pretty insanely powerful.

For Perfect Acoustic Engineer, what action is it to change which sections you are altering? So, say you are making the rogue's space very quiet, but the rogue moves. Is it a free action to make the quiet area follow the rogue? Swift? Immediate? Move?
Additionally, this ability is pretty cool, but it doesn't exactly scream "Level-10 Capstone Ability". Something more appropriately "awesome" would be causing those affected by sonic spells to go deaf for 1d4 rounds on a failed Fortitude save, especially since this could be coupled with Audiophile to make evocation spells quite formidable.

I really enjoy this class, though! Great work!
