Other RPGs / Shadowrun 3e and 4e - Share your experiences
« on: April 11, 2014, 10:01:01 PM »
A number of friends of mine (no I swear they're actually friends! In real life and everything!) were contemplating getting together for a tabletop experience, as all but one were interested but had no previous experience. The one was interested, but had very little experience, mostly with 4e dnd which didn't strike him. So after a bit of time, one mentioned he'd heard good things about Shadowrun, and as I was the resident tabletop geek of the party, it was decided I should grab the core books or so, digest the rules, and start a game.

So this is fine, as I dont mind being shanghai'd into DMing, but I have never played shadowrun before. It looks pretty simple, and could be easy to just quickly set up characters for and get going, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with shadowrun, or knew if mythweavers or gitp or somesuch active place were the place to go for tips and reviews.

Anything I should be pre-warned about? Anything good to know for someone jumping in? Just a general information grab here, thanks in advance for anything and everything.

So I can't be the only person who loves the idea of hiring a 5th level npc/taking leadership to get a troll or a hellhound or a leprechaun, right? Oscle, I love your classes. Even if I can't turn it into a PC, there's always something I can do with them. Nice job on the Hound.

Go ahead and open a spot. No idea when I'll be back regularly.

My work schedule coupled with a wealth of fun (sarcastic use of fun there) has pretty much killed any amount of time I spend online anymore. With that in mind, I am stepping out (or down, whichever the case may be) of every game I am currently involved in, including this one.

If any of you know folk from the other games I'm involved in, and I haven't copy/pasted this into the OOC thread for that game, please let them know. I'll only be stepping out of this site for an undetermined amount of time; I simply don't have the time to keep up with and compose messages for the games I'm in. Which sucks, because as you all might have picked up from the number of games I dive into, I enjoy pbp. So hopefully I'll be back soon.
So I know this game is slow moving, but it's honestly my favorite game at the moment. It sucks to split from this. Zach is a character I've thought a lot about, and I am sure I will bring him back in the future and develop him even further. I hope you all continue to enjoy this game; hopefully Zach can slip into the background as an organizer. Take it easy, all.

So this is a thing. I suppose this doesn't fall at a bad time, since we just took a city. There are a wealth of things that Rao could get up to; he's a doll to play, but I simply don't have the time to give my little engine of destruction. Sorry, all; it's been fun.

More specifically to this game, I am VERY, VERY sorry. I suppose Greed could easily be arrested/lost somehow, but I know this comes at a shitty moment. If I could promise any time at all, I'd try and see out the fight, but I can't guarantee that. :(

Everything clicking into place had Zach panicking more. "No, no thats fine then, enjoy it." The strange little white-haired man went back down to the main room, muttering something about "no spies, so hopeless, no spies, no hope...." under his breath as he walked. Eventually smacking himself, he stopped panicking and started taking deep, meditative breaths. This would go swimmingly, if he had to make it so himself. He focused his attention on the Medusa, hoping that the guild's man would make an appearance soon. Not having seen the person beforehand, and knowing the world's penchant for ill-placed humor, he was ready for the worst, and as he took a drink to steel himself he seemed to relax into the madness.

Until the exchange happened, Zach would be nearby Clarice, watching for any signs of issue from the guildmembers or any sign of disturbance from a non-member.

I'm really sorry, all, that I've been out for such a long time. A combination of being overly busy and it completely slipping my mind. Things have been difficult lately.

Is Kong supposed to be with the group, or alternatively, after so long and with such weirdness in my postings, woul it be easier on all if Kong and I stepped out?

Greed made no swipe at her as she passed, seeing how his clumsy, bold strikes might plant one on Dirk before he has a chance to recover himself. Instead, he looked straight on at Olivia, praying that she was the type for pride and honor; "Are you leaving a challenger standing? Cowardice or impotence? Should never let a woman fight without her toys." He gave his best sneer as he taunted her, hoping to seal the remark. The guard captains and knights he'd ever scuffed with usually took that kind of shit personally, and he would hate to miss an opportunity to distract her, or at the very least make her look foolish.

No, actually, though I will take the moment to do something really, incredibly stupid if given the chance. If it works, that is.

Rao paid the cries no attention, if he indeed heard them at all. They stopped fighting, so he stopped exerting himself. Like a cat strutting after a hunt, he walked slowly around the closest group of halflings, choosing those that looked tastiest to pick apart limb from limb, one at a time, discarding them if their taste did not satisfy him.

Murders. Now there was something Harry hadn't thought he'd be delighted to hear about. There wasn't a damned thing he could do right now about the town, and though he was supposed to be keeping an eye out for anything suspicious, as well as preventing the coming apocalypse, he couldn't help but think that dealing with a string of murders might be important. Important to figure out who was doing them, and why now. So Harry made it his aim to uncover the sources of these murders, note the anomalies he could find, try and put an end to a human source.... and pray that the source was one human who saw opportunity in chaos, as opposed to the alternative new foes sowing strife....

He took whatever files he could find on the string of murders and settled himself at a desk, making it very clear to any involved that he wasn't to be disturbed. No doubt he would have to talk to some of the other constables, but first to settle himself with the facts.

"Eric, I don't know what kind of help you're comfortable with, but I think we should try and figure out what kind of rumors are going around. I'm going to see to the constables; could you see what the people are hearing? Anything to do with anyone from the city, you never know what there could be to hear." Harry himself goes to report in with the constables. He needed to know what current social brewings were happening, what centers of unrest there had been, and the more recent crimes. Even if he had a duty to the people to rid them of these strange happenings, he still had a driven need to protect them from themselves.

Now that I have some time to sit down and look at the "guns", I'll let you know soon what kind of tech I foresee Zach wanting.

"Jones, how in the hell do we keep our eyes open for an invisible monster? Aside from the signs of general oddity that you have been kind enough to identify, we've had no training in seeing. Do we operate by gut instinct?" Harry had been generally quite skilled with gut instinct, though sometimes not quite skilled enough. Such as knowing when his duties as a public peacekeeper might be hindered by his general lack of muscle against drunken reprobates.

"Everything is going to go wrong. With our luck, this is going to turn into a blood bath. And we will wind up owing money to get it cleaned up." Zach wasn't usually nervous at large functions; his position had always been clear, drilled, ordered. He hadn't needed to question or formulate. But now, this, it was partially his own making. His own task, which he felt both excited for and completely incompetent at making happen. He'd ordered a few of the new recruits to stand as posted guards, never alone, as he would have been ordered to do. He had them in shifts, so that they would not grow to resent their positions, and so that they could interact with potential clientele, making them more useful in the future. He had taken many considerations, and come up with solutions to many problems.

And at the end of the day, the plan was to pray that things went accordingly, and hit any mob that might cause problems in the face with the narrowest portion of his sword until they stopped moving. This did nothing for his nerves, especially since he so very much hoped it might go well. Retreating momentarily to his room, he called out for the Sackbiter family. "Sackbiters? I may have a task for you all, if you're not intending to partake of the celebrations downstairs. The younger ones, who might not be wanted around alcohol and violent guests, in particular...."

Greed's right arm swung back as he regained his stance. He went to touch his necklace, thought twice, and made an aggressive shift forward, arms raised. He needed to get one good swipe in at her; trying to wrestle her down just wouldn't do. To Dirk he hissed, "Just go," before making a hard haymaker aimed directly at Olivia's head. He cursed himself for not having any smoke bombs or escape devices, but it couldn't be helped.
