Now this is some serious (awesome) planning :)

well, i didnt send a letter... i use twitter to contact em..

i assume that whoever run the group of websites that are cohosted can copy the bg folder and it can be pasted to wherever, at least that seems like the simple thing to me.

There is NO ONE. That's the point. The whereever is also the point.

Also- you all- come up with a plan and EMAIL it to me. I can't check in here regularly. I can't even get on twitter regularly, so please don't try there either. I need 1 plan, 1 email.

but does anyone care how my day is?
Well you never asked how my day was going, I had to move a BUCKET OF PEE to get to my patient today, imagine how that went. :(

I have 2 kids. Don't even talk to me about bodily fluids.

You all can figure it out.
I guess we sort of already have a plan.
No, sort of is the point here.

I've had people email and say "hey, fix it!" or "hey, get your guy to fix it!" or "hey, I don't know what I'm doing but maybe I could fix it!"

None of that works. At all.

I can't fix it. There are problems within the files. I don't have the knowledge and don't know anyone who does.

AND- here's the issue- these are hosted right along with my other sites. Pretty simply, right on bluehost (which isn't expensive), but I can't just hand over login because then you can get into everything.

So- let me clarify...

There are 2 options. Someone could really really know what they are doing and be extremely trustworthy, but gotta tell you, I've been burned BAD in the last couple years (like, we're talking police involvement) because of trusting the wrong people so doubt that will happen. OR

Someone could know what they are doing, set up their own site, be trustworthy enough to get the keys to my backend to get all of the data out, copy it into their site and tada, off of my plate.

Again though- decide here. Talk it through. And then send me a comprehensive PLAN (not ideas or wishes) that will take max 1/2 an hour of my time.

I have a full time job, a part time consultant gig, am teaching 2 undergrad courses this semester, have 2 businesses and 2 kids... I have no time.

.
.
.
hehehehe... I said "keys to my backend"

It really isn't much to host a site these days, a three year contract with the current host, including domain name fees through them and their current coupon, comes out to $427.62 or just over 11/month which is less than people pay for Hulu's hosting of free media.

Already offered on this score - I've got a number of websites hosted under an account of mine, so while this would be the largest, wouldn't be a problem to add one more. Plus, I have a vested interest in keeping the hundreds of thousands of words of my content from disappearing into the aether :P

Go through the plan. It has to:

-- require pretty much zero effort on my part

-- take assholes like that guy up there with you.

I posted on the metaboard. You all figure out the solution. Email it to me.

Any further information on this one? We're quite literally slowly dying here.
To fix things all you have to do is access the admin panel and turn off email registration required or fix the mail bot. But the owners couldn't give a crap about the site, no log-ins, no activity, no additional sub-forums to discuss their made-up games they are trying to sell online, and every time there is a problem people try to grab Meg's attention on Twitter and nothing works.

Presumably the only reason this thing is even online to begin with is because the host wants the full payment up front so we're coasting off the initial donations but no one has any idea when they will end and obviously we won't get any warning when renewal comes up and become subsequently dropped.

I can only hope someone did a crawlbot of the site, or is malicious enough to access the database, so we can all run off under a new owner whom when they decide they want to step back isn't a dick enough not to hand someone else the ability to correctly run the site.

Hey, you know what-- you're welcome for paying for this site for you to use. You're welcome for building it in the first place. You're welcome for putting in a ton of effort over the years for keeping it running.

And here, let me run through what I got in return:

-- people demanding things of me on twitter. (Yeah, guess what, I ignore that. Come with solutions. I don't have time for someone else's problems).

-- a letter mailed to my HOUSE-- someone found me in real life and where I lived? So not cool guys.

-- Um, yeah... nothing.

I don't want to be here. I don't play D&D. I've never had a single dime from anyone to pay for these boards. Ever. What donations??

And made up games? Dude, I was in Oprah magazine.

So not the way to get help.  :clap

Board Business / Here's the deal

Hey all--

Hobbies change. Le sigh.

I (clearly) don't have the time or energy to upkeep these boards. And the demands on twitter is annoying... like... I get you need help, but does anyone care how my day is?

And the letter to my house was just damn creepy.

So- two options. I could just shut it down. But I so don't want to do that! (But did I mention that someone sent a letter TO MY HOUSE?)

Or-

You all can figure it out.

Who will take over. Who will host. How will you transfer, etc.

These are hosted along with our other web stuff so I can't just turn over the password, because wow, pandora's box... so it has to be someone trustworthy to grab files and get out. I have NO ability to support from the server side. None. (Obviously)

It's definitely win-win. Keep on chatting, minmaxing a storm and get the support you actually need.

When you've decided, send me an email at gameologists at gmail.

Smooches.

Creations & Ephemera / Pack the Pack! Meg's board game is live!
« on: June 24, 2014, 11:16:47 AM »
Totally abusing my power with the news and the sticky, but hey, I think I put in the time way back when to deserve it ;)

I made a game! A tabletop game and now I've turned to Kickstarter to get it made. It's tiles and a minimum print run is 1000 copies which means I need to raise $18,000 (yowza!). HELP!!

It's an awesome game, it really is- I got a ton of help and a bunch of notice. I was chosen as one of Cards Against Humanity's Tabletop Deathmatch's Finalists (out of 500 submissions) and had a reality-show 'esque made about the game.

But the word needs to spread like crazy if this game is going to have any shot.

Here's why it is cool:

- Fast game that is easy to learn but lots of strategy options
- Great warm up to a night of gaming
- Tons of RPG "easter eggs" and then some not-so-hidden references too (original D&D characters anyone??)
- All ages meaning you can play with probably ages 9 and up without losing any fun
- Non "Gamers" will have fun with it too- play with your mom!

Please please help! Tell everyone you know. I really need the word to get out and it's not which means if I don't get a push soon the game will fail and that is super sad. Because it's a great game, it just needs more people to know about it.

Well THAT was painful!

We REALLY need a web admin- someone who isn't just our friend that we beg every time this happens.

It was a severe attack again and took some code cleaning- something way beyond my pay grade to the point I don't even understand what was wrong.

There must be someone here who is capable of fixing this sort of thing, yes? So if it happens again we can get quicker results?

Blarg though, giant pain in the butt.

Off Topic Fun / Podcast Survey- help us out!
« on: May 09, 2012, 02:10:55 PM »
We've made "the top list" for the past 2 years and I want to again this year!

Go and fill out the podcast listener survey! And while you're there, click on us!

http://rpgpolls.com/fill/survey/2012-RPG-Podcast-Listener-Survey/brilliant-gameologists

Putting our name at the end just shows you got to the survey through our referral, so when you tell your friends, your loved ones, and that weird guy on the bus who is always trying to sell you his hair, make sure you tell them to put our name there too so we get credit.

That way we can see the stats just on the people who went to the survey through us. And that would be cool to see 'cause I'm betting you all are MUCH cooler than the average podcast listener.

So go on, it'll only take 3 minutes, take the survey! And put some comments (about how awesome we are) in that comment box at the end. That's what it's for!

For example, a comment just went in that said: "I hear if you have a podcast you get to nail @bg_meg."

Maybe not say that, but putting in comments is one of the most fun things to review when we go and do the full analysis episode.

12
I've had more thoughts on the conservative vs. progressive talk too so I think we'll definitely need to revisit that.

Thanks both for amazing feedback!

We've made "the list" for the past 2 years and I don't want our pathetic showing of episodes to stop it again this year! (though we have released weekly episodes for 2 weeks now, so we're on a roll!)

They are all embedded in the show notes. What do you think about any/all of these?

Grinds My Gears

What do you think of the phrase Dime a Dozen?

RPGs as Kid's Shows

Wonderpets is either brilliant or brilliantly horrible. And no one is voting for the former
It reminds us of Burning Wheel
What Kid's Shows remind you of RPGs? Or vice versa?

The Culture War

Are you Progressive or Orthodoxy?

Drinkin'

Should you drink at the game table?

Other Questions
What do you think of our interstitials? What should we go with?
Are you pro or con Ming Ming?
Do you like our new format? Psych, I don't care what you say, we're doin' it.

There will be! I just have the details left to do on another new one (actually wholly new this time!)

I did post a couple and may continue too- they are ridiculously cute, and it's not just me as a mom saying that. Seriously.

I'll put them up in the photos on the Brilliant Gameologists facebook page:

Me too. We need some awesome folks to outweigh the legions.

Just as an FYI for us...

Last Tuesday (valentines day), josh and I welcomed another little girl! Well, little is relative. She was 9 lbs, 4oz so not too little at all.

We're all doing great. Val, who is 2, is doing great with her new little sister, though she doesn't get why baby Carlie doesn't wave to her and why she spends all day (and night) biting mommy's boobs.

So we're mostly MIA right now. Just wanted to share why!
