Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / Re: My spellcasting house-rules
« on: February 02, 2012, 08:35:28 AM »
I modified the Cure and Inflict spells. The changes are to increase the bonus amount healed (on top of the d8s), remove the cap for bonus HP, and allow it to be based on CL or HD of the recipient, whichever is greater. Also, the mass versions have a range of Medium and can affect any targets in a 20' radius.

Also, I added in a blurb about being able to cast any spell with a range of touch on any number of willing creatures within the caster's reach on a single slot. This will hopefully encourage buffing and make healing go much further on a per-slot basis.

Ask someone if they want Coke or Pepsi, they'll answer with their favorite drink quickly.

Ask someone if they want Coke, Pepsi, or Mountain Dew and you'll still get a quick answer.

Ask someone what kind of soda do they want and it will likely take a bit to decide.

Political decisions are more meaningful than drinking ones, so the decision process takes longer.
Well, luckily they have eight to ten months to mull it over.

the choice is not Pepsi or Coca Cola.  The choice is Pepsi or getting kicked in the nuts.
Ha! Best paraphrasing of the issue ever!

On a related note, this is probably a lot of why negative adds are so effective. As much as people hate it, I think they understand the idea of choosing the lesser of two evils. Just make the other guy look bad enough, and people will fall in line.

Gaming Advice / Re: Cold/Hot Environments and Energy Resistance

If memory serves, Resist 5 causes you to be unaffected by any environment that doesn't cause lethal damage each round.  Fire for hot, Cold for... cold.
Common sense wise, that makes a lot of sense.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: What is the point of traps?
« on: February 01, 2012, 10:23:45 PM »
Alternately, mundane traps are still used, but are really only meant to be CR 3 and lower. More lethal varieties might exist (that would deal enough damage to be unfair at low levels), but they're expected to be overcome quite easily. At this point, they're really just decorations, like that tapestry in the corner over there. So, it might make sense to use them at low levels, but beyond that, you don't even bother rolling. Effectively, you stop using them.

Hence why so many people, except the ones in power of course, want to get rid of the two-party system.
Aside from the status quo, why are we stuck with it? I've heard there are benefits to it, but I don't know what they are.

Regarding evangelicals and tea partiers and Gingrich... yeah, it is some kind of bizzaro world scenario.  Well, I actually think it shows  how weak the principled conviction  is within so many of those groups on those issues.
In all fairness, I think it's bound to happen when you try to take a lot of complex issues and simplify them into a handful of yes/no answers. It's even worse when you try to narrow it down to one (Republican vs Democrat).

Come election day, you're going to be asked how you feel about abortion, gay marriage, the budget, the economy, the war, and a whole slew of other things, and your only two viable answers are "Republican" or  "Democrat" even if you only agree on some of the issues.

The way traps are now doesn't really do much to the party that knows about them.  And the party that's hit by one knows about them, and then they start checking everything.  That's the problem.
Yeah, that's my biggest complaint. Traps in obscure locations tend to encourage behavior that makes the game boring as hell. I like the idea behind traps, but their current implementation really only works if the players and DM reach a gentleman's agreement on what's fair use of traps so the game doesn't slow to a crawl.

As an example I read years ago at The Den:

Quote from: Josh_Kablack
"You find a sword"
"I search the sword"
"You find a ruby in the pommel"
"I search the ruby"
"You find that it glints in the dawn"
"I search the glint"
etc

(Of course, this was made worse by having to declare every little thing searched, but you get the idea.)

I'd say that because pf the precision damage thing, TWF does get a significant benefit over THF, even taking into account the DR thing, until you get to crazy levels of DR (20+).  Most DR falls into the lower range, and even then there are ways to get around it (Transmuting comes to mind).  Not only that, but PA multipliers work on TWF too, you know.  The only difference is 1-hand vs 2hand weapon.
I guess if you have pounce either way, they'll be pretty close on a charge. The only real distinction is you have to pay a feat to get TWF up to par, so you should be getting something for it.

As for SA out-pacing DR, I think you're right. As I mentioned earlier, it's pretty hard to balance TWF and THF. It's not too hard if you set the balance point to be base weapon damage. The problem is that TWF can quickly out-pace THF with stuff like Sneak Attack. You could balance it assuming SA use, but then TWF becomes pathetically weak without it.

Robby, what was your original TWF change?
I covered it in my combat thread. TWFing is in the first post, and I redid the TWF and TW Defense feats in the second post. I hadn't yet rewritten ITWF and GTWF, but I like Ziegander's ITWF version.

Basically, everyone gets the equivalent of the 3.5 TWF feat for free, and the feat now reduces the penalties by 2 and lets you take full iterative attacks. TW Defense gives you a scaling Shield bonus to AC and an immediate action parry option.

6956
Well, with two longswords it eeks out a bit more damage. Even more so with weird stuff like monkey grip. I might be convinced to lower the penalties across the board though (to -2/-4, -2/-2, and -0/-2 without the feat and to -0/-2, -0/-0, and -0/-0 with the feat).

...

The first one allows you to make two attacks on a standard action, on a charge, or even on an attack of opportunity in addition to lowering the penalties by -2. I think that's certainly worth the feat.
Yeah, Monkey Grip could interact with it weirdly. How does Power Attack work? 1:1 like normal? The thing is, if you're putting in a one feat investment to get TWF and you have to take a -2 penalty to hit, it can be easily compared to a THFer using Power Attack, taking -2 to hit for +4 damage.

Even getting the extra attack on a charge or AoO, you're still doing about the same damage as a THFer, with a -2 penalty to boot.

Now, given all the extra ways you can tack on extra damage, it's actually really hard to balance TWFing and THFing beyond base damage. Obviously, extra damage like Sneak Attack favors TWF, and per-attack reductions like Damage Reduction favors THFing.

Do you mind if I use your ITWF version in my project? Veekie suggested something similar, but I like the way yours scales.

No, I don't mind.
Thanks!

General D&D Discussion / Re: How do you play a hyper-intelligent character?
« on: February 01, 2012, 11:16:53 AM »
It's a hard comparison to draw. There are lots more ways printed to increase your Int in 3E than in 2E. A lot of 2E involved DM fiat, wishes, or similar means. I think there were some Tomes back then, too, but I don't remember the specifics of them.

I think gnomes got a +1 to Int (and -1 Wis), but they were otherwise limited (you could only play a fighter, thief, cleric, or illusionist, and you had some pretty strict level caps, so you'd never be able to cast Wish).

6958
Interesting. I'm still not a fan of the normal -2 penalty on attack rolls, seeing as how, without feats, the damage is still about on par with two-handed fighting.

I like your TWFing feats. I think the base one is a bit weak, but if I'm reading it, you can make two attacks on a standard action, right? That's a definite improvement. Again, I think the penalty should probably be -0, though.

Do you mind if I use your ITWF version in my project? Veekie suggested something similar, but I like the way yours scales.

Other Games / Re: Dominion (card game)
« on: February 01, 2012, 10:34:29 AM »
I was mostly talking about Chapel in a game with Black Market. I didn't mean to compare it to Forge just as a card. Forge would lose on cost alone.
Oh, my bad. I took that out of context.

I still do buy them, but I should probably stop because I tend not to use them. I played one game where I discarded my Forges almost every time they made it into my hand.
That's kind of how I feel. It looks good sitting there in the supply, but it seems so often, I look at it and my remaining four cards and either don't see a good way to trash them or I see me being able to buy something better anyway, and wish it were a Gold, instead.

That said, when I have a choice between helping myself and hurting someone else, I tend to choose the hurting. Just because I figure my hand doesn't get any worse by hurting them, so I can still play the hand I drew, but their draws get progressively worse.
Yeah, this is purely anecdotal, but when I play two-player, it seems if one person attacks and the other doesn't, the aggressor almost always wins.
