General D&D Discussion / Howling Warrens ... how gygaxian a DM do you wanna be?

Pick up Underdark, and check out the rather small Howling Warrens section.
It's a 4e version of the 3e and earlier Pandemonium plane.

step 1 ... -5 to Perception checks to determine if the PCs can hear the howling
step 2 ... notice the disease has a level and a plus (!)
step 3 ... notice the save value goes up by +2 each time

result ... it is entirely possible that the PCs never know they've actually wandered
into The Howling Warrens.  The save number keep ratcheting up, to unbeatable.
And the disease level can go up too, also to unbeatable levels.  The PCs have to
blow all sorts of coin and time and rituals, to figure out what's happening.  Too late.
Encounter powers become 1/day.  Dailies are also just 1/day. 

Huzzah --- says the mean-o  :shakefist nerfy DM.

You Break it You Buy it / BoVD Alternate Curse

BoVD has some alternate curses in the opening chapter.
1 of these increases a monster one age category.
Hello Dragons !!

Let's say you are a 1 HD 1st level dragon wyrmling, whatever color.
Not a dragonwrought or kobold (too bad).
Mercantile feat, and that theme-y thing that gives some more gold.
You can buy 3 castings of Bestow Curse, right off the bat.
So your baby dragon is now age category 4.

During 1st level, you can afford 6 more castings = age category 10.
During 2nd level, you can afford ? more castings = age category ??
etc ... (this doesn't include the 1/level discounted item)
At will item = 3*5*2000*.75= 22,500 gp

Here's where things get interesting.
Advanced Dragons have virtual age categories.
So far as I know, there aren't any other "virtual"
age-type rules in Draconomicon or Races of Dragons.
I might be wrong, but it's a very limited application.

The SRD uses the virtual category, forwards and backwards.
Meaning the HD and the age category define each other.
EDIT --- jumped the gun on this part. The SRD doesn't have this.

So this appears to be uncapped.
And those Improved Spell Capacity feats look oh so yummy.
Anyway, it's T.O.  :evillaugh
This isn't happening in a home game, at all.


EDIT changed the 2nd level 7 and 17 to ? and ??

r.a.i. Ardent with a 6/10 PrC // Divine Mind
pre Mind's Eye updates , for historical purposes , could even be nerfed a little

Psi Rogue // Divine Mind with Mind's Eye updates
Full caster powers known and ppoint equivalents , but limited to 5s and 1 6th level power.
DM aura helps the flank buddy. Forces lots of MAD choices.

Lurk // Expert / Assassin / Ebon Saint
Combines the only Lurk PrC with decent synergy from the needed Assa spells.
Possible single 9 , allowing 2 8s via EK feats and Psychic Chirurgery expenses.
Then make an item of the single 9, and take the other Mind's Eye option.

Soulknife 20 // PsyWar 20 or PsyWar 11 / Slayer 9
... rather silly it takes away One mind's eye psywar update.

Ideas ?

Off Topic Fun / Vent holes in a whale carcass

I was thumbing through a newspaper and came across
an article about a scientist that studied whales.

step 0) ... beached whale either dead or dying
step 1) ... haul whale into better position and location via Backhoe
step 2) ... drill vent holes into the underside of whale ... ( umm ... death farts anybody ?! )
step 3) ... dissect whale outside/in piece by piece
step 4) ... climb inside the whale to continue work
step 5) ... break and remove one rib, so you can get to heart/liver/lungs etc ...

So then my kitty avatar kicks in ...  :D ... uh-oh

If you've ever seen the Hellraiser set of movies,
you know about Pinhead and his chain attacks.
Idk which one has the girl that plays with the cube
artifact down in the "hell" part, but at some point
she ends up putting the Skin of the other woman
on herself, to escape from whatever plot line.
This sounds a lot to me like the Skin Of Proteus.

Ok so go find yourself a whale like above, and
wear it like The Skin. No one will know whether
you're a beached whale or not.

IF POSSIBLE ...

It seems to me the definitions of Towns and Cities are restrictions right up.

Finding said thorp or village or metropolis ... via skills or spells.

Diplomacy is probably necessary ; especially when dealing with Cohorts of higher level Commoners.

Of course I like PsyRef ... and the skill checks to know about it, and then Want it, are easy.

I'm open to just about anything.

My local races sucked.

The national races sucked, and were predictable.


The other thing that sucks, is with the advanced primaries
in Iowa, New Hampshire, and similar,
there's gonna be political yap adds going all Christmas break.

Let's see if I can talk my relatives out of having the TV on 24/7.

So do you figure it will work? If so, this "trick" will work for any "monster" prc that uses medium humanoid shaped monsters. Such as the slaad and yan-ti prc in savage species.

I checked through all the bits and pieces and I would say it works.
