September 1776 / Chapter 1: A New Beginning
« on: July 01, 2016, 05:00:44 PM »
The setting: A rural town not far from Philadelphia (and by not far I mean a Few days ride).  It has been a few weeks since news of the destruction of New York by fire at the hands of the British.

Except that's not exactly true, according to old Sheriff Barnes.  If you listen to him Washington used a form of alien science we'd call magic o open a door to multiple realities in the hope of destroying the British, and lost control.  Even before then you knew something was up due to the prisoner he kept locked out of sight in some sort of circle etched into the cell floor.  It looks like something out of a book on witchcraft.  No one knows who the prisoner is, but he taught Sheriff Barnes some tricks, which Barnes taught to you.  You learned in order to humor him as they never really worked.

Until now.  Now Barnes is dead, killed by a 15 foot high monstrosity that looked like some sort of spider or crab.  Now your tricks work just fine, and you have to wonder who the unnamed prisoner is, and why he's where he is, because Barnes died before he could tell you everything.  No you have to see to the defense of your town somehow, and maybe get word through to Philadelphia, where Barnes assured you there was help.

And to make things worse it's raining like hell.

Gaming Advice / What hasn't been done (or at least done well)?
« on: June 13, 2016, 12:09:28 AM »
I've been thinking about writing an rpg, and wanted to try something that hasn't been done to death, but not so niche no one would have interest.

So what could actually be a draw without being cliche (i.e. kill people and take their stuff).

Off Topic Fun / Goddammit I hate PC's
« on: May 12, 2016, 10:42:17 PM »
So the PC has been a lil warm lately, and today hit 80 so I decided too peek at Speedfan and see what temps were.

Temp1 (which is something in an ISA socket that isnt my drive, cpu or graphics card) is 51c with nothing else on. Not even the browser.  I turn it off and open up to see if fans are running, and they are.  I dust it out even though there isnt much dust.  Turn it back on and its 51c.  Get old PC to hook up to web only to find out its almost as hot.  Hurriedly chat with people and the only thing anyone can think of is thermal paste or tell me 5c isnt so bad.  Then I notice something is using 35% of cpu.  I hit task manager to see whats up, and while im going through the process list i notice its svchost, which immediately disappears dropping the CPU down to using onlu 6%, and temp immediately stabilizes.  Antivirus and malware scans show nothing, but event viewer has lots of errors.

I hate PC's somedays.

Gaming Advice / animater dead errata
« on: April 09, 2016, 08:37:25 PM »
Does anything anywhere specify what happens to undead created via Animate Dead when their masters are rendered unable to give orders due to a mind-affecting effect?  Do they go uncontrolled, or do they just stand there?

They've changed Windows 10 to a recommended, automatic update.  If you don't have recommended and automatic updates turned off you'll automatically switch over on next update, which will screw you over if (like me ) your job depends on you having a previous version.

Game Design / D20-ish System
« on: January 31, 2016, 02:32:22 AM »
I have an on again off again idea for my own system based off d20 that I work on, and it's time to discuss again.  We'll start with Base Attack Bonus:

BAB does not scale with Level (though there will be rare opportunities to raise it via class).

BAB is either +0 (anything currently having Wizard BA), +1 (anything currently having Cleric BAB), and +2 (anything currently having fighter bab).  There will no longer be Feats like Improved Trip, Improved Grapple etc (or they will give new options instead of what they do now).  Instead all Opposed Combat Checks take a -1 (-2?) Penalty for every point your opponents BAB is higher than yours.  If his BAB is at least 2 points higher than yours you also provoke an AoO.

Unlike currently BAB will be a bonus to attack, damage, and Initiative rolls.

Certain Feats/class powers may require BAB of a certain Level.  For example if there is an Improved Grapple it may require a BAB of +2 or higher.

How does this sound to everyone?

Off Topic Fun / Happy Holidays!
« on: December 24, 2015, 11:06:13 PM »
Happy Holidays to all my friends. Be careful, drive safe, and if you get liquored up at the family dinner try not to begin any sentences with "You know there's something I've been wanting to tell you miserable, life-wrecking motherfuckers for a long time now..."

And belated apologies to those I have been mean to.  You know who you are.

General D&D Discussion / Balancing an Immobile Race
« on: November 30, 2015, 01:59:37 AM »
A friend has made a request of me: one of his players wants to play what's effectively a robotic jack-in-the-box.  Shouldn't be too hard but for one thing: it would have to be carried by another PC as it has no movement of any kind.  It has been suggested allowing it to move via SLA's at higher levels (they want 3-5 Racial Hit Dice), but am I alone in thinking balancing this out will be a tough task at best?
