All WBL in a vast pile of jewels and coins, which practically means +4 to two ability scores.
A long time ago, an infamous ghost experimented in making axes rather than swords. Life and Death were the result of this: far more self-aware than the swords normally are, and too proud to be 'just' a piece of equipment. Eventually, they got away entirely, and utilising their newly-found ability to take form to garden a small patch of desert wasteland themselves.
It is beneath this garden that all the treasure their subsequent wielders have been made to donate to, with the easily-removed (seemingly) axes throwing people off suspecting anything more.
The axes are quite similar in attitude: both of them like the peace of gardening, and are too proud to be treated as tools or equipment. Death, however, is macabre in the extreme, and takes alarming joy in combat, whilst Life is on the whole more excitable but less eager to kill.
