Roll20.net, tips?
« on: March 31, 2015, 07:44:01 PM »
I imagine I'm not the only one here to have played on Roll20.net, but now I'm about to DM a game on there and I'm having some issues.

Namely maps.  How the heck do you get maps to work as a DM?

Upload map
Set it on the map layer
Use the helper function to align it to grid
Cover the area with fog of war
Reveal fog when players have vision (assigning an aura helps judge that distance)

One of my players has a subscription for dynamic fog, but you have to do more map prep work for that to function

I think there's a well done tutorial, that's how I started

The issue is the "set to map layer."  It doesn't seem to want to do that, instead turning into a movable token.

I'll look up tutorials, though.

It's entirely possible a browser update broke some functionality. If you think it's functionally not working, see if you get a difference between Firefox or Chrome.

I don't remember the exact steps to actually set the map layer, since I setup a bunch of stuff in advance quite a while back. If I get some free time, I'll go back and check.

From the Page Toolbar, Create New Page
From the left toolbar, select the second icon, select Map & Background
From the right toolbar, select the second tab: Art Library
Search for a map, or select the Star for your Art Library and upload or use something of your own
Drag the map to the canvas
Right click on the map, Select Advanced, Select Align to Grid
Select 3x3 grids of the map, it will pop up a box to confirm dimension scaling, select Align to Grid
Hold Alt while you click and drag to make additional adjustments, without snapping to grid

All this worked ok in Chrome today

Based on the games I've played in it and the comments my DM has made it seems Roll20 prefers certain kinds of files for maps.  I don't recall the type he had the most success with.
