Chapter III-Maerimydra
« on: October 04, 2015, 11:22:33 AM »
Once the larges drow settlement in the north-central portion of Faerûn, Maerimydra was long past its glory days even before the current crisis. The castle that was the home to the city's ruling house had been no more than half full for centuries.

After having broken through the combined Kiaransalee drow, goblinoid and giant army, your group meets several Maerimydra refugees and remants from Lolth's loyalists who crawl out of their hiding places to pledge their support to you. They're in pathetic condition, starving and sick, not really any good for combat, however each offers you information of recent key events that happened in Maerimydra, allowing you to piece together a story.

An heavily wounded drow spy approaches Koroguma in particular:

Your... disciple... Sent me to deliver you this...

He hands a scroll to the ogre mage before falling dead on the ground. The parchment is nonmagic, but still of high value for you, as it is a highly detailed map of the city!

Koroguma unfurled the scroll with a satisfied grunt. Kagetora had done well, mapping out the locations of the invading camps. A pity the messenger had perished before he could ask about the missing shadow lord.

The ogre mage showed the map to his companions.

"A siege then," he pointed out the camps arrayed against the city's keep.

"If we with to cut off the head of Kiaransalee's serpent...that will be our prime target. First however we'll have to evade the horde. What are your thoughts Mistress Aullara?"

Her power was impressive indeed, though her claims of divinity seemed far-fetched. Regardless it was best to play along, as they remained useful to each other. Inwardly he wondered if she had set Tisiphone to her recent affections, the better to keep the oni engaged. If that were true, such manipulations were hardly required. Koroguma had his own reasons for being there, and had found the warmth of the drow warriorsess to be a suitable shield against the cold stone of the Underdark.

Aullara watches in curious amusement as the messenger approaches the Ogre Mage.

"Your resources are impressive, Koroguma... and this map shall prove useful, if its features are up-to-date."

She glances over the map's contents briefly, checking for points of strategic importance.

"Perhaps we can use the battle between the fire giant leader and Irae to our advantage. The more occupied they are with each other, the less occupied they will both be with us. However, with Kurgoth's eyes upon the castle, our likely destination, and with the supposedly increased defenses, it will not be easy to simply slip through unnoticed. Still, it will serve us well to travel as inconspicuously as possible. Tisiphone, you are better versed in the strategy of battle than I, what say you? Or, perhaps, does our new ally have a unique perspective, something we can't quite picture?"

Meanwhile, Aullara looks over the spy's body. He had been in bad shape, but managed to survive long enough to deliver key intelligence. It would be a good opportunity to test her newly appointed powers.

She reaches down with a hand an touches the fallen drow's limp head, whispering words of power and her hand begins to glow. A moment later, and the glowing ceases, with Aullara antcipating the power's effects with marked attention.

"Landwalkers sometimes do not think of waterways as paths of travel. The map shows streams flowing into a lake within the city."

The drow spy's fatal wounds are miracolously healed under Aullara's touch and he stands up, with a look of disbelief in his face.

You brought me back... Why do you deny me the sweet release of death? Don't expect any gratitude from me for this.

"It was your decision to come back from beyond the veil. I merely opened the door. You chose to walk through it. Now, if you are ungrateful for the chance to serve your mistress once again, perhaps you wish for me to send you back. This, too, is within my power."

The spy skulks a bit before replying.

You are indeed correct. I could've ignored your call, but I was just trying to run away from the horrors I saw. I didn't fear death, I feared dying and being back as one of the unholy abominations that now stalk the city. If the White Bashee triumphs, there would be no place for me to hide in the other side either in the near future. I'll follow you for now, and then perhaps when this is over, you can send me to the cold embrace once more.

Tisiphone looks at the map.

"Perhaps we could sneak into the Noble Plateau climbing or flying and see how things are from up high. If the Tower didn't have many patrols, we could go there instead." She pauses for a moment. "I wonder if we could somehow bait the giant's troops somewhere else and then take the chance to move to the castle. " Another pause. "Why is the Lake of Blood called as such? What kind of dangers does it hold?"

Koroguma addressed the resurrected drow.

"What of the Shadowlord? Where last did you see him?"

To Tisiphone he replied, "The campfire smoke will render aerial observation much less effective."

He looked towards the insane fish-man for his...insight.

Aullara tugs upon the threads of history connecting Maerimydra to the present, hoping to recall some relevant information. Perhaps, even, there was something she had learned about the great city when she was but a girl?

"The campfire smoke will render aerial observation much less effective."

"We don't need to see everything. Cross checking the information on the map with the few information we can get from observation is bound to give us some advantage, even if minimal. At most, we will lose some minutes and risk being found by random patrols... That will be crushed by us."

Koroguma addressed the resurrected drow.

"What of the Shadowlord? Where last did you see him?"

"In the grand boulevard, master Koroguma."

Koroguma nodded at the messenger. Of course Kagetora would certainly have moved on by now, but it was good to know the Shadowlord was still in play.

The ogre mage knew little of this city, aside from the map, so left the strategic planning to the drow most qualified for the job.

After listening to the information regarding the Lake of Blood, Tisiphone continues speaking.

"So, for the moment, we can count the Lake of Blood out, unless we have a death wish."

She then turns to the fishman. "What kind of magic do you have in your control that can help us in this situation?"

*BURP* "Well, I am quite proficient with illusions. I could perhaps lure out the guards, or cause a distraction of some other sort."

"And you need to stay close to the illusion in order to keep it working or you can leave it and go do something else? If it's the former we will need to sacrifice you in order for the rest of the group to move in. If it's the latter then you can make an illusion to divert the attention from us. Anyway, we can't lose any more time."

"Very well. And how big a diversion do we need or want to make here?" This time, Tisiphone looks to Aullara.
