Remember the critter appears if you are successful and then begins to fade as long as the circle isnt broken.  How do you wish to isolate the non participants?

I'd suggest going back to the jail and trying it down there. How far out are we?

http://13160-presscdn-0-69.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/03_02_Colonial_Williamsburg.jpg we'll use dis as a map for now.  The Inn you're at is the same space as the Williamsburg Inn.  The jail is at the Spa of colonial Williamsburg

So, under a quarter mile. I'll check with the other guys before I start the ritual.

Is there enough space in the jail to do this ritual, or do I need to be out in the middle of the woods?

It requires a fire so outside seems likely.  Also you need two other participants.

This might not work. We need someone to guard us. Are any of the other guards in the know about Barnes' beliefs?

I'll ask them what they've seen, working under Barnes, and to be truthful. I'll explain that the recent events have made this important.

Sense Motive, to see if I feel they're holding back:

They look damn uneasy.  "You mean the prisoner don't you?"

"Yes. You know some strange things have happened since Barnes died. Your full honesty is not only appreciated, but necessary. I'm not judging; I just need to know what you've seen."

"I don't think our prisoner is human.  I've seen Barnes feed him live rats."

"Same here.  He scares the hell out of me, but Barnes always said we couldn't kill him, and we couldn't let him go.  Never understood why.  Said we'd need him when the End Times came."

"End times." *sighs* "Why am I not surprised?

What did you see or hear of the attack that took Barnes' life? Did you hear the noise out from the distance in the forest ten minutes ago?"

Elizabeth is attempting to gauge how open these men might be to magic/the ritual:

They know about as much of Barnes' death as you, and are highly suspicious it happened the way it did.  They seem terrified of magic, but would be open to the ritual to gain revenge for the old sheriff. They did hear the roar.

"Before I met Barnes, while studying natural science, I learned about what you might call 'magic'. It's not so much of sorcery as you might think in fairy tales, but more of a deeper understanding of how the world actually works. It's something I feel I could spend my entire life studying and never fully understand; rather, I'd still barely understand it. Barnes knew far more than me, but he and I were on the same page about these issues.

I went with the other two constables to where that monster was that attacked Barnes and I saw it. It is monstrously huge, and I do not think all of the men and muskets in this town could kill it, or if we could, it would come at a prohibitively high cost. I do know a bit of banishing such creatures back to the realm where they came, but I need two other people for the ritual, and it cannot be interrupted. The ritual will bring the creature here, but physically bind it. I'd like the other two constables to guard us while we do this, to make sure that we do not stop. Are you willing and able to help? You need to be able to maintain your focus no matter what you see, knowing that this should save a great many lives."

Bhu: does it matter who the other two people in the ritual are? My thought was to have them help with the ritual, leaving the other two PCs (who are hopefully more skilled) to guard us.

You can use anyone you want, so long as you make sure they know their part.

If they agree, I'd say have them help and have the other two PCs stand guard. We should do this out somewhere remote. I'll stress to them that the ritual summons and binds the creature, so they can't cut and run, or it won't stay bound.
