Elizabeth quickly calls a meeting with her most trusted men.

"Some spider-like monster let him go because she laid eggs in him. There's nothing we can do to save him, and he's only going to get worse until he painfully dies when they hatch. We need to kill him and burn the body, but the mother will likely know and come for revenge.

Still, it needs to happen. I'm trying to think of how to spin this to the town. If I tell them we need to kill him to stop a monster infestation, they'll either panic or decide to burn me at the stake. I could maybe argue about him having a plague and being contagious. That might be the best way to go.

I'm thinking we quietly end his suffering here, say he expired due to an infection, and that he shows signs of being contagious, so we need to cremate him out of town."

Elizabeth puts her forehead in her hand.

"It's a fair question, but there's no real way to prove this without waiting until its far too late. If even one of those things survives in the town, this problem will get much worse.

How I 'know' is by looking at the evidence, and comparing it to the esoteric tomes I've found and studied. Sure, individually, they look like collections of mythology, but collectively, they do a far better job of explaining things not understood than anything else. And while you might question the veracity of such texts, I ask you, 'How did I learn to conjure purple fire or turn into a hawk if these books are just rubbish?'

We need to act, and I think the best route is to smother him, take him out of the town, and burn him. I'll be the one to kill him, but I'll need a few people to help me carry him out, build the fire, and corroborate the story. Also, we'll need to go out of the town in force. We need to assume we could be attacked any time we're out, and the fire might attract the 'mother'."

They aren't happy with this, but it is agreed too.  The doctor balks though, so you may need to do some persuading.

Is the doctor in the room with him currently? Elizabeth wasn't planning on consulting him on this.

He's being held at the doctors house to keep an eye on him.

Is the doctor aware of the magic that I used in the fight?

Somewhat.  Are you explaining the infestation bit to him?

He's just as leery now.  He worries if you kill the man here the parasites will leave the body.

"Good point. We should take him out of town and kill him right before burning the body. We should be able to cover him in a shroud to take him out of town."

Is he fully unconscious? Is he moving about at all? Does he have any family here? Have they been visiting him?

He is neither conscious or moving, and seems to have no one to speak of.  It's why he was on the hunting party.

Lets take him out, shrouded, aiming to be quiet to not draw too many questions. We'll take some wood with us. Once we get far enough out, clear an area to build a good fire to burn him. Right when we're ready to build the fire, kill him. set the fire in a ring around the body, so any parasites fleeing have nowhere to go.

It appears to work.  No parasites emerge, so perhaps they weren't far enough along in development.  The hunter never wakes, even when you put the musket ball in him.  One of the men says a short prayer.

It's then you hear an unearthly shriek in the distance.

Just to make sure, the body is burning, right? We should run back to the town quickly, and be on the lookout for any lone travelers.

Is the thing still shrieking, or was that a one-off thing? Is anyone in the town acting differently?
