Chapter 2: Burning Farms of Death
« on: June 25, 2012, 02:58:59 PM »
The next farm appears quite normal in the distance.  You begin riding up to it by nightfall.  You can dimly make out someone sitting on a rocking chair on the porch.  He is most definitely armed.

"I 'spect you gentleman have gotten close enough for my taste.  What's your business here."

Jones: "I'm an official Constable in nearby Philadelphia, these are my associates.  We were hoping to find a place for the night."

"How do I know that's true."

Jones: "You don't.  You can let us come closer so we can talk without shouting, or we can go elsewhere."

Jimmy snorts and mutters, "For that matter how do we know he's not going to shoot us if we attempt to leave?"

Wilfred glances off to the side, and mumbles "Do you think he'll take half a bottle of rum?"

"A peace offer? It didn't even come to mind. Try it, I have little patience for another gunpowder exchange."

Robert glances back at the rest of the group, then carefully, slowly steps out of cover, taking a few paces forward.

"You don't look like the average constable.  You look a lot like Peebles apprentice."

"Strictly speaking, I'm not a constable. You know Mr. Peebles?"

Harry steps out after Richard, leaving his Ferguson rifle on the ground behind him. "I am, strictly speaking, a constable. Harry Dresden, of Philadelphia."
I'm here and ready to keep confusing the hell out of everyone I meet.

Jimmy sees no reason to interact with this man more than he already has.  Let the others make targets of themselves.

"It's a very, very complicated story." Robert glances back at where Jones and the others are. "It might be best if we told it inside."

Robert shrugs ever so slightly, in a "What choice do we have?" gesture.

Eric approaches, leaving his rifle behind. His pistol is inside of his jacket.

"Explanations will come when I make sure I can trust you.  It'll only take a moment.  Shirts off please."

He looks tense.  More than tense.  You realize he doesn't want to shoot you, but he's under the impression he may have to...
