The soldier's eye brows rise with the question, "I don't suppose they would mind all the much, assuming the food was still cooked."

"Well, yes, that is the other problem," Darayat admits, frowning. "And I take it no one else knows how to cook?"

"Are you willing to trust some random person's cooking? Cause I know I barely trust his, and it actually taste good." He makes a gesture toward the belligerent cook, who replies with a skillet. The soldier has to dive out of the way to avoid it, and from the ground he gives a sigh, "Though I am beginning to think the risk might be worth it."

"Well, I suppose we could always try diplomacy first. Stand in front of me, will you?" Darayat gazes around innocently while flicking his fingers as though trying to shake water off of them and murmuring a few words.

The lizard whirls on you, another skillet cocked and ready throw, his face has mild confusion though, "Why I want them win?"

"That's what I want to know," the artificer says innocently. "See, we've all been marching for days trying to catch up with the opposition, and right now everyone here is half-starved and disturbingly close to an enemy force. And there are two options I can see here: You keep doing what you're doing now, and if they come back everyone's still starved and some of them are lying on the ground unconscious. Or you start feeding everyone, which I guarantee will make you the most popular person around."

The lizard's reply sounds conflicted, almost sad, "I want cook...but boss not say I cook."

Darayat nods sympathetically, taking a step forward. "Alright, then how about this? Tell me who your boss is. I'll go find him and see if he'll let you cook."

The lizard takes a moment and then with some seeming difficulty replies, “Leit-naut Flar-teno.”

The soldier next to you pales a little, “Oh dear…” He grabs your shoulder, pulling you away a little and then close. He whispers, “He has to mean Lieutenant Florentino, but he died when our levies were routed…”

"He'll find out sooner or later." Darayat sighs heavily before walking back over to the cook. He hesitates, then says, gently, "There's something you should know. The lieutenant...he's gone."

Worry turns to alarm as the message sinks in, "Boss...dead..." is all that comes out of the cook's mouth before he starts hissing and growling, but he makes no threaten actions. Suddenly he stops making any noise, perks up his head and looks expectantly at you, “You boss now?”

"Uh." Darayat glances around, but no one seems to be willing to step in and help. "Yes. For right now, I'm the new boss." He stares pointedly back over at the other soldiers, giving them a help-me-if-you-want-to-eat-today look.
