Nanashi makes a mental note about the tooth... I guess he got into a fight at the place he was drinking...  it was an oni party after all...

I nod.  "North it is, then."

I begin walking north.
“Hast thou not felt in forest gloom, as gloaming falls on dark-some dells, when comes a whisper, hum and hiss; savage growling sounds a-near, dazzling flashes around thee flicker, whirring waxes and fills thine ears: has thou not felt then grisly horrors that grip thee and hold thee?”

Spider beings walking north.  Then, suddenly, he stops.  There is a bear in the path.  And it doesn't look very happy.

It roars.  A horrible bestial roar.  The sort of roar that would make lesser men wet their pants.  The sort of roar that would make even oni a bit scared.  Err, probably.

Either way, roll Spirit: Willpower against the bear.

You are completely and utterly paralyzed from fear.  This could have gone better.  Well, you can keep trying to make Spirit: Willpower checks vs. 4 every interaction to through off the spine-numbing terror.  And you can react to things, so counterattacking is possible.  But still... Those claws...

Are heading straight for you, Spider.  I hope that oni training paid off.

I desperately attempt to strategize.  But how do you outmaneuver or out-think such a perfect killing machine as the bear?

Having studied its movements and established its weaknesses--to wit, it has none--I desperately attempt a parry.

So, uh, that would be 15 damage as the bear's horrible claws cut through your armored exoskeleton.  :(

Time to make those Spirit: Willpower rolls to break free of the crushing fear!

To be honest...  Nanashi never did much fighting before he got here...  But there was one thing that terrified him more than anything.

Assassins?  those were easy to dispatch, they were human.  The various youkai are also simple enough, they have minds, they have reason.

Bears?

They just kill.  Remorseless emotionless.  Nanashi doubts that it would even feel pain.  He sees the bear claw into Spider and tries to move, he honestly tries, but is incapable of it.

"Well now, this doesn't seem entirely fair."

In your bear-induced horror, you can barely look up to see the source of the voice.  A strange-looking girl, with blue hair and black rabbit ears.

"Lets cut you down to size, okay?"

Something like a blade appears in her hands, and with it she quickly cuts the bear.  Once.  Twice.  The bear falls into clean thirds.

Which reform into three smaller bears.  Damn bears.  On the plus side, these smaller bears don't seem quite so scary.  So you can actually move!

Nanashi, you're up!

Nanashi shakes his head.  This savior from above trisected the bear.  Perhaps they have a shot.  Still, it's best to not take chances with these things.  Nanashi quickly takes out some of his oils from his bag and begins tracing runes on his arms.

"Hrm," I say aloud, adjusting my initial estimation of the bear, "it appears that it does have a weakness for cute girls with rabbit ears.  Then again," I add with a licentious grin, "who doesn't?"

With that, I attack the nearest sub-bear.

The sub-bear, looking rather startled by its sudden trisection, attempts to parry your blow.

Yeah, that worked better than it thought it would.  Spider takes 6 points of damage.

Having determined that, even in their reduced state, they are still more than capable of attacking the dude in armour, they try their luck on Nanashi.
