A few minutes later the hike down to the road nears its end, and you can make out the upturned cart on the south side of the hardpack.  The woman appears to have left, but Skulda had previously watched her cautiously hide behind a tree and some scrub upon hearing your group moving toward her through the forest.

As they near the wagon, the raven flies over and alights on Skulda's shoulder, and she says loudly while turning towards where she knows the girl/lady is hiding "It's OK, Dear. You can come out. We know you're there, but we won't hurt you."

"Tired travelers that got separated from their caravan due to troll attack." Agni replies. "We actually managed to spot you on our way here and then we decided to see if you could help us... We are looking for the caravan's whereabouts... it was heading to Eyrrinberg. Saw anything?"

A short, lithe woman with a snow leopard following her steps forward and offers her hand, which is covered by a black glove which twinkles in places as if studded with tiny stars. As she pulls her goggles up, you see that her green eyes are slightly almond shaped, and tilted inward, and you can just make out the points of her ears behind her golden hair. She says "I am Skulda. Pleased to meet you. The road can be a dangerous place for lone travelers. Would you like to go with us while we try and catch up with the caravan? That is... if we're heading in the same direction."

The woman is indeed headed in your direction, and falls in with your group as you resume your march east.  The day passes slowly as you plod along the road, passing a few scattered farms; Moeid glanced longingly at one of those farms as you approached it, but quickly jerked her eyes forward and continued on stoically until it had fallen well behind you.  When asked about the farm she said only that she intended to head to Eyrrinberg with the rest of you.

Questions asked at farms you pass tell you that the caravan passed by the day before, or that they camped in the farm yard and set out early that morning.  You find signs of their camps, coming upon the first late the first day; a bit more than an hour before you were planning to stop.  The next day you find their camp a bit sooner, and the third day sooner still, around noon.  You can tell they are pushing themselves longer than they had been before your absence, and each night they have camped at a farm, not on the open road.  Each day you continue past these farms, inching ever closer to the caravan that had left you behind, and finding farms of your own at which to request a night's rest.  With an hour's work from some of you, chopping wood or stacking hay, the farmers are fairly accommodating, allowing you to sleep in their barn, or even in their own house.

Late on the fifth day of travel Skulda finally spots something she had been hoping to find much earlier:  three large earthen mounds on the south side of the road.

"Praise Hel! Maybe I can finally call us some horses. Agni, come with me. The rest of you go on. We'll catch up." Skulda barks, dropping her typical honeyed tone and speaking as if she just expects everyone to follow her orders unquestioningly. Not even looking to see if the others listen, she crouches next to the graveyard and starts drawing out a circle on the ground with crushed chalk.

As the others pass on out of view up the road, Skulda finishes her binding circle and sits cross-legged in front of it, but instead of going through the ritual summoning that Agni saw before, she begins to heave and retch, and eventually leans over and vomits forth what looks like black feathers mixed with black, caustic smoke. The swirl of smoke and feathers pours forth from her, but instead of blowing away in the light wind, it is sucked into the middle of the binding circle and vanishes.

When it is finally over, she sits up, visibly shaken and sweating, then moves over to another nearby site and begins drawing a second circle. At first, it looks the same, but after looking more carefully, Agni notices that the symbols which ring it are distinctly different. Then, in a slightly cracked voice, Skulda says "Come, Scion of Hel, Emerald One. I have need of your grace, and skill. I have made the proper signs in deference to your Mistress. Come, and taste the World again."

Abruptly the symbols within the circle begin to glow, and a black, swirling vortex forms in the center. Then silently and slowly, a figure rises from its center: a beautiful woman, in the ritualistic robes of a Priestess of Hel, her eyes glowing like emeralds in the sun. Wordlessly she points at Skulda with a hand ending in fingernails that look like ruby-tipped claws and then she vanishes in a flash, leaping into Skulda's body.

Skulda lurches backward and shudders, and then opens her eyes. The most obvious change is that her left eye now glows with the same green that the Green Lady's eyes glowed with, but the countenance of her face has also subtly changed. She stands with a deliberateness of her motions that is not typical of her, and says to Agni "Come, let us catch up with our comrades. Help me mount." and with a flourish of her wrist a horse appears, complete with saddle and bridle. She holds her other hand out expectantly towards Agni.

Agni watches the scene silently, but can't stop thinking.

Quite different from last time... And I guess something is off... As if the spirit took over Skulda's body....

Then, when Skulda asks for his help, "As you wish... ma'am. And while we are away from the group... Are you still Skulda, or the entity that I just saw?"

The woman says haughtily "Of course I'm still Skulda." and grumbles something about foolishness and men under her breath.

After about a minute has passed, she summons another horse for Agni.

Agni mounts the horse summoned by Skulda and continues talking.

"I apologize. I did not want to offend you... But, I feel something about you has changed... And it happened right after that lady spirit entered your body. She saw it too..." Says Agni looking at the space where his "companion" is. "That's why I thought that spirit was controlling your body, or something..."

Skulda, a bit more like herself, says "No, she is not controlling me... but I do admit that she might be influencing me a bit... Expelling the first spirit left me a bit weak... and she took advantage of it, gaining a bit more of a hold on me than I'd normally like."

After a moment, she says "Nothing to be alarmed of, though. I am still fully in control, when it comes down to it. It's just my emotions that are a bit altered... somewhat like looking through a colored glass."

"I can tell... but it is difficult to fight it. Possible, but there is a price... Each time I resist her urgings, I am weakened a bit until she leaves me. The influence of most spirits only impacts me in minor ways, and many times the binding is tighter. So I needn't worry about it at all. But some of them are stronger, and odder... This one is not so bad. She was once a mortal Priestess of Hel. Some of the others I am sure were never mortal..."

"I am not totally sure. Even she has been dead for so long that she's forgotten by all but a small cult devoted to her. I think she was tricked and betrayed by a creature from Niflheim who called himself the Green God. She died in the Cairn Hills, shortly after bargaining with it. More I do not know."

Skulda and Agni's conversation drops off as they see the rest of the party ahead on the road. "I see you weren't joking about the horses," Bjartr says, a bit surprised.  "Too bad the day is nearly played out; dusk will be upon us in less than an hour."
