Epic Content
« on: September 24, 2015, 05:49:14 PM »
So the recent Fun Finds discussion got me thinking, we really haven't posted a lot of information about Epic content. Probably because of it's reputation for being broken.

Well I'd like to dig through some of it, but as you know Epic addons are well scattered across the Supplements so it's pretty easy to miss. The Player's Guide to Fearun & Dragon Magic I know have Epic content but is there anything else?

Various Forgotten Realms books have epic spells in them.  One (from either Lost Empires of Faerun, or Champions of Ruin, IIRC) allows a Lich to break his phylactery into several parts (one per caster level?) and all must be destroyed to permanently kill him.  It can be cast multiple times to further break his phylactery into more and more parts.  It only had a spellcraft DC of around 35 or 40, IIRC.

There are several things like that scattered around.  I'll take a perusal later tonight.

Edit
Quote
Aumvor's Fragmented Phylactery

Transmutation
Spellcraft DC: 30;

A lich can separate its phylactery into multiple parts.
From: Champions of Ruin

Although that isn't the actual spell text, something tell me that link will help you in your search.

Edit 2:  A quick perusal at the link shows epic spells from various FR books, and also Sandstorm.

Epic Insights had a crapton of epic level progressions for different PrCs.

Complete Warrior had some Epic feats, and I think Sandstorm/Frostburn/Stormwrack each had some Epic spells.

Fake Edit:

Sandstorm has the epic spells Beast of a Thousand Legs (smacks a two mile radius with a bunch of tornadoes for 20 hours), Dire Drought (smacks a 1000ft emanation with extreme heat for 20 hours), Global Warming (a hundred mile radius permanently moves up one temperature band), and Volcano (does what you think it does.)

Frostburn has the epic spells Animus Blast (kill creatures with cold, raise up to 20 of them as undead under your control), Animus Blizzard (similar concept), Coldfire Blast (40d6 Frostburn damage), Dire Winter (the opposite of Dire Drought), and Ice Age (the opposite of Global Warming).

Stormwrack has Part The Waters (MOSES VS. GODZILLA!), River Dragon (turn a river into a dragon. No, really.), and Seas of Blood (large area of water becomes bloody, and a bunch of Fiendish Sharks show up.)
"There is happiness for those who accept their fate, there is glory for those that defy it."

"Now that everyone's so happy, this is probably a good time to tell you I ate your parents."

A variation of Epic Magic  but one of the Forgotten Realms books also has stuff on making your own Mythals. Lost Empires most likely.

I think CA (both) are the only completes w/out epic base classes.

I also suggest forking Fun Finds: Epic Outsets

Complete Arcane had epic advancement for the Warlock, Warmage, and Wu Jen. CV had no epic base classes.

So the recent Fun Finds discussion got me thinking, we really haven't posted a lot of information about Epic content. Probably because of it's reputation for being broken.

Also because it's so easy that it feels like cheating. If you don't have bounded resources, you can do anything.

Dragon 297 had 8 epic PrCs, 5 epic spells, and some epic feats (including the awesome Battle Dance).

Lost Empires of Faerun pg 43 has Iolum's Longevity which allows you to nuke the Fighter's Bag of Rats every few decades to extend your youth.  Plus two Seeds, Shadow, which mimics other magic, and Mythal which makes Epic Spellcasting even more broken.  Largely due to having more mitigating factors and allowing you to mix effects without giant jumps in DC.  You can easily get the Mythal DC down to 0 meaning you can come up with new ones instantly at no cost.  Easily giving yourself huge Spellcraft bonuses, temp Hp and regen for backlash damage and conjure secondary casters to make each successive Mythal ever more powerful.

The last time wotc bombed their forums,
Tempest snagged some of the old Epic stuff.

These dead-end at various gleemax links,
so a search of the Wayback is needed.

I never interacted with Jaerom Darkwind, but
he was very active on the wotc boards pre- '05.
Perhaps he's still vaguely interested , idk.

I approve of this thread. One of the things I mean to do is go through all th eepic stuff and decide what is allowable inside a vanilla campaign without breaking everything. Hint: some of the feats are fine, but some of the spells are WTF-worthy.

Yeah, kind of.

Mostly it's not really too bad, I've had to restructure the list a few times so far but I'm slowly getting things together.

I think the likely hood that a "normal" Tier 6 class build,
gets all the way up to epic, is zero (like 1 / x -> infinity).
Planar Metropolis' have >50% chance 1 Epic Commoner
and Sigil is supposed to have (infinite) one of everything.
Invoke pun-pun clause to confirm.

Most of the Tier 5s would be hard pressed to not blow
their money on Revives, Reincarnates + Resurrections.
"Hey why don't you retrain into VoP?"
"You actually think I'm'n'a make it to level 22 ?!"
"Welllllll ... you do cut a cute purple unicorn now."
"Shaddup!"

Dragon #363 has Epic Destinies you can get by sacrificing your 21st, 24th, 27th, and 30th feat slots, getting a series of abilities related to the destiny you choose.
Some are hit and miss but some are quite decent.
Like with 4e characters, you are expected to end your adventure career after Lv30, though it specifies that is up to the player and DM ultimately.
Im really bad at what I do.
A+

WotC has an article on them too, but I'll mix and match. Maybe Dragon offered more.

hmm ... There was a thread about those.

Boz's posts 4+5 is that article.  Interesting stuff,
which technically ought to enable all 4e epic destinies.

So preliminary list, I'm still working through the FR books and psionic's online stuff, the ELH/DMG will of course be the last thing to be added. Oh and note on WotC's Epic Compilation which contains most of the older/3.0 Epic Insight articles, a bunch of it's stuff was updated so I tried to cross it out the best I could.

Soro, are we implying that the above list is balanced for ECL17-20 play. Or are you still in the "collection" phase?

Still on collection, like I said it'd be a bit.
Most of my research takes place on my part-time job (it's the best time to doddle around with games!), just haven't been there much lately it seems.

Also as a rebuke. Without Epic Spells why is "Epic" so bad? I mean you name Slots, but seriously there are no 10th level Spells, no 11th, etc. Those Slots are entirely used to cast Metamagic'ed none-Epic Spells and there are several ways to reduce Metamagic Costs or make them entirely free to begin with pre-Epic. At least on the Epic side you're still expected to use a higher level Slot and have 38+ in your Ability Score before you can Persist a 9th level Spell...
