D&D 5e / Is a Tank'lock possible?
« on: March 30, 2015, 11:18:45 AM »
In 4E I played a Con'lock that served as the party's tank because mostly because I was up to my teeth in HP compared to everyone else.  Now we're playing 5E and we still don't have a legit tank, but I'm wondering if I can spec my Warlock out to take on some of the tanking type roles.

He's a fifth level right now and I've been doing a lot of Armor of Agathys and Arms of Hadar to get up close and provoke opportunity attacks and deal out some extra damage, but I'm already locked into GOO and Tome.  Any suggestions moving forward?

General D&D Discussion / Re: Is D&D 5 better than D&D 3.5?

what about 5e vs PF?

I know a lot of diehard PF, but I prefer 5E to PF.  Combat is smoother and simpler and I really appreciate low level balance especially when trying to bring in new players.  Every PF campaign I've ever played with new players has always left them feeling like they were either underpowered when trying to play mundanes or overwhelmed when trying to play any caster at all.  With 5E a level 1-5 Wizard feels as useful and easy to understand as a 1-5 Fighter and a 15-20 Wizard feels powerful, but so does a 15-20 fighter.

I have to agree with TenaciousJ - if you're playing PF it's too easy to break a game with a Synth Summoner and if you're trying to run a game with new players you're gonna spend the first several sessions trying to explain all of the goddamn bloodlines, oracle revelations, etc.  But I think a lot of what I like so much about 5E is that there aren't several thousand pages of expansion material out yet.  If you're playing PF or 3.5 you're looking at a new player tasked with choosing dozens of classes and prestiges.

When my most recent 5E game started the DM sent out a survey to the new peeps playing that had about five questions.  Is your character the kind of character that likes to swing a sword and do lots of damage?  How does your character feel about magic?  Which would you prefer to do?  Would your character be a group leader?  Do you put distance between you and your foes?

Then she just sort of gave everyone an option that suited their play style and it worked out really well.  I'm sure a lot of my preference to 5E has to do with that though.

EB with repelling is awesome.  With 4 rays you can easily control a field over a couple of rounds.

If you're doing a GOO pact with your Warlock you can mentally communicate to any creature that understands a language.  I bet someone could make a decent case for ravens understanding a language.

De nada.  :cool

I'm playing through as a Tomelock right now and I actually did the same thing for my familiar, but I'm kicking myself for it because we're a pet heavy party as it is so my bat seems markedly useless at the moment.  I really wanted an Octopus for gnarly tentacle action, but not being anywhere near water makes that hard.

I've read the source materials.  It looks really really fun to me, but I've yet to find anyone who wanted to play.

Or just choose a race with darkvision.

This, for pushing darkvision into a 1 mile radius:

With PC attacks.

This for pushing sensor radius into 10+ kilometer range, with attacks. This post and the one under it:

Arrgh! The birds, the birds.

Any further questions?

Does Darkvision work for something like Darkness?  I think you'd have to take something like Devil's Sight (Warlock Invocation) to see in Darkness.  But if you're taking Warlock you can dump darkness for something like Hunger of Hadar and get some decent AoE control and damage.

Cast Hunger then use repelling blasts to push enemies into the AoE.  You can still target them with Devil's Sight even though they're in the dark and if you took something like magic initiate which lets you get extra cantrips you can use something like Ray of Frost to keep them in the field and keep them taking damage.

D&D 5e / Re: Have they simplified too much?
« on: March 26, 2015, 11:58:29 AM »
No way.  It makes optimizing more complex and based more in planning strategies than just having big numbers.  Plus, it's super easy for non-players to get into.  I'm in two weekly games right now and each of them are made up of about 50% new players.  Not only are they enjoying it, but they also feel just as relevant to combat situations because as it's been mentioned before it's kind of hard to screw up too badly with most of the classes.

Compared to the more recent 4th edition it's got layers and layers of complexity beyond just simple pick your attack and then move forward and compared to 3.5 it's easy enough for most people to be able to pick up a PHB, a character sheet, and a pencil and start playing that same day.  3.5 was a nightmare for anyone coming into the game - especially if you were playing with experienced people who minmax - there were dozens of books that veterans either had or had access to that could ramp them into gods by 7th level and if you were the new guy who decided to be a Bard because isn't music cool you were useless in a lot of situations.

I like 5e.

I prefer a Tomelock to any other kind of Warlock, but if you're just going to for the addition of a familiar before going back to Cleric levels why not do a Chainlock and get a familiar that you can do more with?

I'm MW.  I've been breaking D&D and pissing off DM's for years and having great fun with it.  That's really the reason that I'm here.
