Speaking of, I just came back from my mom's country home in Canela. Refreshing stuff, right?

Well, sort of. Turns out there is a fucking puma loose around there. It has slaughtered a bunch of sheep and eaten one of the caretaker's dogs. (At least they assume it was eaten. Its body wasn't found.)

I can almost feel Mother Nature taunting me.

I was expecting the post to end in a story about how you fought the puma.

You're not giving the puma's self-preservation instincts enough credit.

Also, minor linguistic faux pas on my part. Technically it's not a puma, it's a jaguar.

As in a Jaguar with jets on its feet?

No, I think it's a regular one.

Some goddamn fool is grinding out their cigarettes in the hazardous room.  Whats in there that it bears said name you ask?  About 20 or so 50 gallon drums full of acetone and methy isobutyrol ketone.  Another 100 gallons or so of isopropanol, and a wall tank of hydrochloric acid.  And about 20 cans of 'paint' which could more accurately be called flammable lacquer.

No leads on the jaguar just yet.

So I'm spending the whole period between now and New Year's Eve at a rented house in Montevideo. The house is goddamn gorgeous, it's basically like living in a museum. It's got TWO FUCKING PIANOS. Who needs TWO pianos? Oh, and nearly every room in it has a ton of books.

So why am I ranting about it you ask? Well it turns out that for whatever reason Montevideo sets my senses on fire. Particularly smell. On a ten-block walk to a restaurant (because my relatives wanted to dine somewhere in the old city) I identified no less than twenty-two different scents. Some of them didn't even make any sense until I realized I was downwind and the scent had been carried a whole block in my direction.

It's summer here, which means the house is coolest where there's ventilation. Unfortunately, it seems every goddamn night a bunch of assholes just HAVE to gather under the balcony to smoke pot (which is legal here, by the way) and that smell unnerves me the worst. By the way, if Montevideo is anything to go by, anyone who claims that legalizing pot brings crime rates down is a goddamn liar. Speaking to the people here, it seems that after it was declared legal, the local drug cartels decided to get proactive about "other" enterprises. You're perfectly fine if you go to certain tourist locations at the ciudad vieja, but for fuck's sake do not go out at night there unless you want to experience rape and murder firsthand. The cops just plain DISAPPEAR at night.

Legalizing pot does affect crime rates positively in areas here in the US from what I've heard..  We don't have the same sort of cartel issues though.

Well, you guys are not smack in the middle of the distribution line. In order to make enough money selling drugs there, weed can't be your sole product, that's why the more dangerous criminal organizations don't get caught over pot. So there is an environment where legitimate businessmen can compete.

Around here, though, it's basically impossible to monitor the entry of such drugs. There's way too much territory to cover, for starters. So legalizing pot here simply makes smuggling other drugs into the country that much easier. Nevermind the vast expanse of jungle-covered territory, so legalizing pot ends up having the opposite effect.

And then there's the fact that a chunk of tourists end up coming to Uruguay in order to legally smoke pot, and some come with other drugs in mind, which represents a market opportunity for the cartels.
