Gaming Advice / [PF] Poison doses and usage
« on: May 20, 2012, 05:04:34 PM »
So, I looked up and down but I cannot tell for the life of me what effectively consumes a dose of poison upon a successful use. I know the dose is NOT consumed upon accidental poisoning, and that's pretty much it. Does an injury/contact poison dose get used up after one successful strike? Two? More? Wouldn't one attack per dose get expensive WAY too fast?

Min/Max 3.x / [PF] So let's pimp out an alchemist!
« on: May 20, 2012, 03:50:00 PM »
So I'm pimping out my Vivisectionist archetype alchie. Bare bones so far:

Str: 12, Dex: 16, Con: 14, Int: 16, Wis: 10, Cha: 8

Feats: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot

I plan on having him mostly throw stuff. Alchie splash weapons once I have some financial security going. Campaign is possibly going long.

So anyhoo, initial thoughts:

1) Master Alchemist is pretty yummy. Cutting crafting time to a tenth of something that's ALREADY short tingles me nicely. Now, what to do for costs though?

2) Needs a way to increase DCs for things like... well, anything he can craft, really. Poisons, tanglefoot bags, the works! Gotta be something in there.

3) Needs suggestions of nifty potions, particularly for persistant potion later on. Barkskin, Haste, Invisibility?

Gaming Advice / [PF] Question about full attacks
« on: May 08, 2012, 05:47:15 PM »
Assume a Monk1/Synthesist1 (bought the limbs evolution twice for a total of six arms, base form biped). He full attacks with flurry of blows, plus his two claws. What does his attack sequence look like? I'm guessing it goes Flurry, Flurry, Claw, Claw (with each attack from flurry at -2 and each claw at -5). Is there an example monster that mixes weapon attacks and natural attacks I could examine?

Legends of the Heroes / Trearion World Tales
« on: April 19, 2012, 06:31:32 PM »
Trearion is a fictional steampunk-ish world I'm writing up. I wrote a short tale that, while does not delve all that deep into the world itself, showcases a couple of characters within interesting positions. Hope ya'll like it.

         Blades and thoughts

Traysworth and Barion had been at war for longer than anyone alive could remember.
One might claim that, as per fantasy cliché, the Empire was evil and bent on domination and Barion was merely the defenseless kingdom in a pointless war. Nothing could be further from the truth – the fact of the matter was that no one really remembered why the war started. And no one that cared to know was ever able to find out. Regardless, wars that go on for generations, or so the story goes, progress by sheer momentum: one side begrudges its dead enough that it can’t bear the thought of letting their foes win, and so like bickering children, the aggressions never ceased.
On that afternoon there was a battle like any other. Drums were pounded with vigor and trumpets signaled attacks, retreats and maneuvers. Sounds of war much like the clashing of swords, the firing of muskets and cannons, the screams of pain as one’s comrade fell to the ground. Oblivious to the chaos in their own fashion, General Winston Drake of the Traysworth Empire and Supremo Comandante Albieri engaged each other in battle. These two men had long transcended the stage where one’s fist or sword spoke for him; both astride their proud constructs (Drake’s a behemoth of flame, metal and fury, Albieri’s an elegant, verdant Forest Guardian), the two commanders led their troops like musicians trying to outdo each other. The ensuing symphony of destruction would be significantly more beautiful to behold if it only did not involve the feelings and lives and breathing instruments of death or thousands of men and women on a battlefield that had long been drunk with their blood.
Both had become so accustomed to each other’s strategies, customs and movements that the very act of waging war was like breathing to them.
And let’s just say breathing in the face of someone you do not particularly like, though you may begrudgingly respect, for hours on end wasn’t exactly the most exciting way to spend an afternoon. As such, like they’d done so many times before, Albieri and Drake spoke.
They’d gone past trivialities such as their love for their respective nations, their hatred for the crimes perpetrated against their respective countrymen and even the classic insults to one’s progenitors. At this point, they discussed the nature of their engagement itself. Though Albieri found Winston naïve to the point of being starry-eyed, he nonetheless appreciated the fresh perspective this nemesis presented.
“So I’ve been wondering for a while, Al. Have you ever considered why we’ve been at a stalemate for so long?”
Albieri found the question intriguing, though simple to answer. “One would assume it’s simply because we are evenly matched, yes? Neither of us has strengths or weaknesses great enough for the other side to exploit.” Albieri’s pale green locks were brushed away from his face as he sat like a bored prince within his control “womb”. His mind alone sent out the commands for his troops as he carefully studied the ensuing battle. Even moreso, his construct avoided and riposted at Winston’s own with grace and speed belying its size.
“I know that as a soldier you know better than to simply dismiss it as that.” Winston replied. “A soldier goes into battle carrying a number of feelings. Bloodlust, vengeance, grief, the simple desire to protect one’s beloved or treasured. It goes double for those with a cause; they feel their sense of purpose gives them strength, it gives them the power to overcome the obstacles they face and defeat their enemy.”
“Your point being? You believe we are equally correct in our struggles? Please spare me the power of friendship lecture.” Albieri noted with distinct, if subtle, annoyance. This translated into a belayed command that caused him to need to adjust his troop’s movements. This teller will spare you the chess metaphor – if nothing else because he is about as good at chess as a goat is at barking.
“War is devoid of something as simple and black and white as a right and a wrong side. Though don’t let anyone know I ever said it.” Drake spoke through a puff of smoke. The grizzled veteran was fond of his smoking pipe, which he took with him to the battlefield. “That doesn’t mean we can’t really believe otherwise. Faith, such as it is, is a very tangible source of strength in warfare.”
Though one might find Drake’s statement strange beyond a metaphysical level, he referred to the phenomenon called Fiamma, a source of power and energy that nearly everyone in the world could make use of. Manifesting basically as a flame, the intensity of any given Fiamma user’s power was directly linked to one’s emotional state. Despite its basic appearance, Fiamma could be trained to take on a number of forms and develop into a number of powers – the more complex they were, the more training they required.
This explanation was unnecessary to Albieri, of course; it is here for the benefit of the reader.
“So you believe we kid ourselves into believing our side in the war is just. But without knowing who started it, that’s impossible to truly determine.” Albieri pointed out. “I have many different reasons to do battle. Right and wrong have nothing to do with any of them.”
“I fight because, as a soldier, it is my job to fight for those who can’t, so I understand what you mean. Fact of the matter is, the war won’t end until one side stops. Now we’ve had this discussion before –“
“—and nothing came of it”, Albieri interrupted, “because whenever we brought the idea up to our respective ‘leaders’, they all had a dead wife or uncle or son or butler that had fallen ‘in defense of the country’. Destroying the weapons themselves wouldn’t work; they’d fight each other tooth and nail if they had to.”
“Yes. Remember when they proposed we traded our daughters as a means to secure the peace?” Winston said with a chuckle as if he were reminded of something funny.
“Yours knocked out half the guards in the Royal Palace on her escape, as I recall.” Albieri didn’t smile, on the other hand.
“And yours made Count Theloh into an eunuch when he tried to have his way with her.”
“Be that as it may, you had a point before.”
“Ah, yes.” Winston seemed to suddenly remember. “We haven’t gained the upper hand on each other in any battle for over thirty years. We’ve both come up with several different ways to attack and defend, and neither has really been able to deal a decisive blow. It’s not like we’re running out of steam anytime soon, either – our ways of life are much too rooted in prolonged war; our countries are practically built to prolong it as long as it takes. So the ultimate, decisive factor at this point is simple determination.”
   “Determination?” Albieri echoed in confusion.
“Yes. Whosoever wishes to win the most… wins.”
“You’re delirious. You’re claiming that neither of us wants to end this war bad enough?”
“No soldier fights alone. We all have family and friends to fight for. Were it a simple matter of the method through which one’s army is raised… whichever army was brought up to protect their homeland would win, simply because the support from one’s beloved would carry them into the wings of a dream called victory.”
“But we’ve both raised our army this way. Both sides adhere strictly to wartime conventions. We’ve not had to hold a single court martial for crimes of war in fifteen years.”
“And neither have we,” Winston continued, “If nothing else because of the examples we’ve set with the last number of court martials. It was a great idea to send the guilty parties to the enemy camp for sentencing, by the way. Cruel, but efficient.”
“You were the one who came up with the protocols for exchanging prisoners of war.” Albieri replied. This was their way of showing each other respect. Had they not been born in warring countries and gifted with such senses of duty to their nations, they would have made the best of friends.
“In any case, I think you see my point. We both believe we are right. We both have something to protect. Neither of us wants to yield. So we fight. Until something shifts this balance, the blood of our countrymen remains in our hands.” Drake sighed sadly, and noted to the other, “I guess it is about time to sound the retreat. We’re only going to lose good men if we prolong this any further.”
   “Agreed.” Said Albieri.
The commanders saluted each other, turned their backs and walked away, and with them the thundering cries of frustration and parting shots from both sides. Rounding up survivors and mutual surrenders, the armies retreated into their respective horizons. To eat, to drink, to heal, and to dream of victory.

Off Topic Fun / Which Lupin III character are you?

First of all, if you don't know who Lupin is, shame on ya.  :p Go watch the first series RAW!

Second of all, post which character you think you're most like in Lupin III. I think I'm Jigen, personally. Not awesome enough with a sword to be Goemon, not clownish enough to be Lupin, not a woman so I can't be Fujiko.  :P

Gaming Advice / Shadowcraft Mages and spells with XP/material costs
« on: February 14, 2012, 04:29:10 PM »
It is generally accepted that one of the reasons SCMs are so good is because they can skirt the issue of XP/Material costs on spells simulated via shadow illusion (mostly, the point with this is to cast Shadow Miracles). However, it is never explicitly stated why they can do this, nor does it say anywhere they skip the costs. Can anyone provide some rules text on this, or is it something along the lines of "the fact it doesn't say you pay for them means you don't"?

EDIT: While I'm at it, how can they cast Shadow Miracles with this? The ability text explicitly mentions wizard/sorcerer spell lists.

Off Topic Fun / Me and my sister.
« on: January 17, 2012, 04:02:59 PM »
Below is a copy of an email I sent to my sister a few minutes ago. It should be self-explanatory enough, but I can provide more details as questions arise.

Frankly, playing tough love is not my specialty, and I'm pretty sure it shows here, especially because my sister is someone I've always had a very complex relationship with. But I need to share this and vent somewhat.

Quote
Hey Sis.

I've heard some very disturbing things from mom today. She says you're starting to get fed up with your course, and you are finding your teachers are becoming increasingly worse.

What I'm going to say isn't something you're going to like to hear, but I think it's necessary. I write to you instead of speaking to you through Skype because there is a lot to say and I want to make sure you will pay attention to every word.

It's hard to get started on this, but I need to get it all out, so I'm just going to do it.

What you're experiencing right now is a process I've gone through several times over the course of my life. It's something you've observed well, in fact. I became enthralled by something, and figured it was something I could excel at. When I was faced with reality, however, suddenly it became apparent I wasn't as much of a hot shot as I thought I was. I had come face-to-face with my limits and I couldn't bear the thought that I was wrong about something that felt so right at the time I made up my mind.

So I started making up excuses. About how the teachers were horrible, about how I wasn't being taught right... sound familiar?

OK, that was mean.

But my point is: I ran away. I can rationalize it all I want, but in the end, the simple and short version is that I couldn't overcome my limitations and become something more. I couldn't improve, because I was too blinded by my own ego to realize just how weak I was. I've only really come to terms with that simple truth many years later.

You're living thousands of kilometers away from friends and family, in a country filled with people you don't care for (remember your comments about asians and indians in Toronto?), within a climate you despise, speaking a language you still struggle with (however much you have improved since you got there) and now you've come to realize that the course you've picked has significantly higher standards than what you're used to. You're being challenged in every single way, and you're alone. As if it weren't enough, it's slowly dawning on you that maybe, just maybe, you could fail, HARD, at something that deeply interests you and that you have fervently pursued over the last few years, enough even to start this whole situation in the first place. You used to puff your chest with pride at the very mention of your approval at OCADU, and now you're badmouthing them. This behavior is fairly new and it comes on the tail of not living up to your own expectations and A LOT of frustration.

So I'm not going to coddle you. I'm not going to say everything's alright and you'll make it somehow, or that if you really think this isn't the right university for you, that you should drop out and seek a different one.

I'm going to tell you to grow the fuck up.

Feel free to hate me for that. You've never sugar-coated the truth for me and I'm not going to be a hypocrite and sugar-coat it for you. You're at a crossroads now. You've hit a bad spot and you need to decide what you're going to do next. You can suck it up or give it up. But whatever you do, base your decision on a simple fact: you're not doing this because of others, you're doing this because of YOU. You're going to break your limits or accept them. And that's that.

I may be the least mature of us in many aspects. But I know the "old me" when I see it. Right now, you're it.

Don't make the same mistakes I did.

Whatever you decide, I won't interfere or try to convince you otherwise. It's your life and you're old enough to live it on your own. Should you decide to go on, I will support you as I always have. Should you decide to give up, I won't judge you for it. I'm pretty sure you might be all shades of anger known to man by now - no doubt thinking what an arrogant prick I am for having the pretense of knowing what you're feeling and what you're going through - but I don't care. You have all the shoulders you need to cry on. I chose to offer you a piece of my mind instead, because I figure it'll be more useful.

And believe it or not, I do it out of love.

Your brother,
[Kuroi]

THOSE WEIRD MONKS: Woe unto the temple of Shaolin, Sai Saici-sama is afraid of ghosts?!

MASTER ASIA: Indeed.
DOMON: ...how?
MASTER ASIA: He dropped poison in my ear.
DOMON: *silence*
MASTER ASIA: Domon. Would I lie to you?
DOMON: Of course not, Master.
MASTER ASIA: Well then! Avenge my death! Kill Schwartz!
DOMON: YES MASTER!
*Domon turns to George and Chibodee while Sai Saici panics.*
DOMON: You guys, don't tell this to anyone!
GEORGE & CHIBODEE: And who the hell would believe us?
*Ghost disappears, George, Chibodee and Sai Saici leave*
DOMON: I need a plan to catch Schwartz.
DOMON'S RIGHT HAND: I will help you!

*to be continued*

(This is a repost of the original. Still working on chapter 2. If anyone could link me to an online free copy of Hamlet with some footnotes on Elizabethan-era English, that'd be great... I need to freshen up my memory of the original.)

Off Topic Fun / Fucking hate intellectual bigots.
« on: January 04, 2012, 06:14:30 PM »
Now, I'm sure a lot of people here already know my opinions on multiple subjects are controversial at best. I make no excuses for them, and I make no compromises for political correctness. In my world, black people are black people, catholics are catholics, and feminazis are feminazis. But there is this one person that has been annoying me to no end with his alleged intellectual superiority even though there isn't a shred of logical backing to his so-called intellectual discourse, who has the gall to call ME "ignorant", "so-called owner of the truth", and claim that I pass my opinion as fact.

Here's an example of one such conversation. He posted this cute video about a little girl complaining that little girls get all pink princesses while boys get superheroes. Which I found adorable, though I DID comment that I found her opinion to not share traces of feminism so much as anti-sexism. It was a statement of my opinion. Guy rushes in to claim that feminism is about gender equality, not superiority. I tell him that assumption comes from the predisposition to believe that males do not suffer from the exacerbation of feminism (read: the extreme variant wherein men are pigs and thus inferior to women), i.e. feminazis. He claims true feminism isn't about superiority, and that I am wrong. I point out that I was talking about the extreme variant, and that I personally believe that being male, caucasian, straight, smart and hard-working nowadays actually works against you because you hold no card to deal if you feel slighted.  Cue comments about how my ignorance is abyssal and whatnot...

Nevermind the two of us live in a country where 50% of all public university student slots are filled based on color (on one of the countries with the greatest ethnic diversities in the world, mind). Nevermind that despite us having one of the highest perceived corruption scores in the world, 35.000 people go to a gay rights event while only 1.500 attend an anti-corruption rally. Nevermind that here, if you're white and you call someone black, you can get arrested, but if you're black and you call someone white, you can laugh it off. Nevermind that if you're a woman, you can blame half or all your problems on sexism here. I'm ignorant and idiotic for thinking that being straight, caucasian, and male is somehow a disadvantage. On another discussion, he called me on for calling someone else a hypocrite - claiming it went on to satisfy my own selfish ego and shit like that (psych major. Seriously, you'd expect more maturity out of someone who studies the human thought processes for a living). My point in that one was: if you want to change the world, go out and do something, don't just stand there moaning about it. Odysseus didn't sit on his ass waiting for the Trojans to quietly give up, he built a fucking wooden horse and slaughtered the shit out of them. Theseus didn't moan about the labyrinth, he got himself some yarn and a sword and went to town on the Minotaur's ass.

If you're going to claim something is wrong, and that something should change, then you should go out and change it yourself. If you can't change it, live with it. If you can't live with it, don't bother me with it and hope it will make you feel better! And above all, DO NOT ACT LIKE YOUR OPINION IS GOING TO DICTATE HOW I LIVE MY LIFE! For fuck's sakes, people, it's not that hard!

I need to punch something.

Off Topic Fun / Help me rebuild my music collection!
« on: December 29, 2011, 04:54:46 AM »
Hello everyone!

As some of you may know, my computer's HD was recently eaten alive by itself. I've managed to recover a portion of my files (some of which were truly, truly irreplaceable. Thank God. You know you've got something good when your "my documents" folder survives three system wipes and four formats). Some of the files were damaged, particularly my music collection, and a lot more was completely lost. I'm trying to piece it back together, but I'm having some trouble finding them (a lot of those were torrents which are no longer seeded).

I'll be updating this regularly with OSTs I'm hunting for. Any help towards finding and downloading them would be appreciated. Thanks a lot, guys.

First few off the top of my head:

So this is the idea. We're going to run a Power Rangers spoof of sorts. It's gonna be freeform, mostly because I can't think of a system that would fit the mold. (And my computer's at the ICU right now.)

Here's how it's gonna work.

The team is to be comprised of five color-coordinated people. The formation is to be 3 guys and 2 girls, or three guys, one girl and a complete moron. Colors will be red, blue, black, white and yellow (replace black for green if formation includes a moron, or swap yellow girl for pink/purple girl so he can dress in glaring yellow), because the color-coordinated people dress up as their secret identity counterparts to make it easier on the special effects crew, and no one ever thinks to look for a group of five teenagers who dress up always in the same colors.

Red guy is the leader. Must have obscene amounts of hot blood and be prone to dramatic leadership speeches.
Blue guy is the smart guy. He'll always try to think his way through things and defer to common sense where the rest of the team tries to punch their way through (like busting a fire hydrant to cool down a lava monster BEFORE punching it).
Black guy is inevitably the guy who wants to do everything himself but is, deep down, a big softie. Not surprisingly he attracts a lot of female attention, but he doesn't give a fuck.
Yellow girl is the ditz. She's eye candy, basically, but she looks hot or athletic or exotic enough to be on the team.
White girl plays mom/group therapist when the Inevitable Mentor Figure is absent.
The moron is a moron.

The group may be joined by a sixth party member that will kick a lot more ass than everyone else combined and will show up mid-season, potentially as a mind-controlled antagonist or as backup, only to suffer badass decay as the story progresses. He'll have something in his uniform that the rest of the party lacks, like armor plates, a cape or just a bigger helmet.

And naturally, there will be kaiju and giant robots. Anyone in the civil construction business is automatically a billionaire due to the weekly reconstruction of major buildings destroyed by the latest battle (unless dimensional battlefields are involved). The team's theme/source of power will be decided by vote once enough interest shows up but I'm inclined towards making them the BaitoRangers (AKA Power Rangers Freelance/Power Rangers Part-timers).

Off Topic Fun / So this ain't the BLYHT boards, but...
« on: December 13, 2011, 09:50:29 AM »
...I have a bit of whining to do.

My computer got hit HARD by viruses. They ate the partition system like it was candy. As a result, I've lost... well, roughly 70% or more of all the data I had on my computer. Some irreplaceable files got saved, miraculously so. Others... not so much. I had a music collection spanning well over 60 gigs, and it's fucking GONE, just like that. It may seem like an overblown comparison, but it's like learning that one of the few things I could count on doesn't last forever either.

This is, of course, on top of a bunch of really annoying shit that's happened to me over the course of a few weeks, plus my inability to contact my friends lately, or making new ones that last.

I feel miserable and alone, and God help me, Gregory House is looking cheerier at this point. My family's been praising the intense determination I've been facing the challenges of life with lately, but right now my self-confidence is shot to fucking hell.
