Bookend History
« on: June 13, 2012, 10:10:02 AM »
Now we need to create the starting and ending periods, defining the borders of our timeline.

In addition we need to define each period as "light" or "dark".

We can discuss and exchange ideas about the starting and ending periods, but please, if you've got a great idea about another aspect of the game, don't share! Keep it to yourself!

So, simply from intuition, there's:  Pre-war, 1000 year war (should probably be broken up a bit) and Aftermath.

So I guess I'll submit Prewar and Aftermath. By light and dark, do you mean the tone?
Hmm.

I really think those are too generic.  They don't tell you anything about the world or history itself.  Luckily, this stage is collaborative.  There's no taking turns yet.  :)

Personally, I like the idea of starting dark and ending light, kind of like a heroic growth of an entire history.  Here are my submissions; I have more ideas for details, but I figure I'll leave it intentionally vague so we can add in stuff later.  If you'd like more elaboration I can do so.

START (dark): The Fall of the Zhorian Empire

END (light): The Treaty of Twelve Nations

The first thing I think when I read that is "Ebberon", Fall of the kingdom of Galifar - Treaty of the 5 nations.

Lets start it with a "birth"
Start: (Dark): Prophesied Child Born
End: (Light) Treaty of the twelve nations.

I've also considered: "Dark": New Technology/Powersource/Weapon Invented, tested and used.

Yeah... that's true.  That didn't occur to me.

Only problem with the birth is that, wouldn't it fit more as an event than a period?  Like, that could be a key event in the opening period, which is more broadly defined.  To have a civil war, it needs to be between factions which were originally melded together... we don't have to have it be an empire, though.

I was gonna suggest a volcano eruption, but that's been done too (Wheel of Time).  Why don't we just go all-out and say:

Start (Dark): A centuries-old prophecy comes true.

That sounds great.

Also lets not make it a civil war. We didn't pitch it as such in the other thread, its just one of those things that are easy to slip into for various reasons. So we should make it a real war. That might be down the road in terms of selection but... its the taint of ebberon I tell you.

So something like "A thousand year civil war among the races of [Middle Earth]."

We did specify civil, actually.  But I agree that maybe just a thousand-year war is better.

DM, maybe we should have a thread for the "cards"?  You can lock it and update whenever.

And actually Eberron's history is an analogy to World War I and the Treaty of Versailles.

Right? I'm into it.

About the thread - what I'm going to do is open a thread - each post will represent a period. Within each period (post) we can have events/scenes. We can just use spoilers under events in a post, which will represent the scenes that we've played that belong to that event; or we could just post a link, because obviously to play them out we'll need a separate thread.

We can do this by giving mod rights to everyone in the game, so that you have no problem moving posts, editing posts, etc.

Well, instead of "Prophesied Child Born" we suggested "A centuries-old prophecy comes true", since the actual birth of the child seemed like an event to me.

Yes, I'll open the thread shortly. I was making job applications and didn't have the time to re-read the rules on the pallete.

No problem.  I think this is where we start taking turns... each person adds either a Yes or a No.  Every round each person can add one thing; if someone doesn't, then that's the last round.

Wait...wouldn't a a birth be an 'Event' rather than a Period? Unless its a hell of a labor with an EPIC swordfight going on in the background...

So maybe 'The Destined Child' would be the period name then?

(yeah, I see the other thread. It's what brought this to my attention)
