Title: Reopening Strata: Round 2
Post by: SolEiji on August 26, 2016, 02:44:06 AM
The Strata (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?board=213.0) game is getting a bit short on players, and I am running into a prime opportunity to add some more.    Not to many, probably no more than one-two max, but still.  Anyone interested?  I can answer questions and whatnot.

Yay! It's Uncle Kitty! It's a PF game, we're all just leveling up to 5th. I don't remember the point buy.
Edit: It's 32. All the rules for making a PC are in the game forum

The game has featured some rather bizarre PCs so far, including a "tainted" tibbet (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=13584.msg235456#msg235456), and an intelligent spider warlock. :D

Bhu, rules are here (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=13585.0).

I find the mix of PF to 3.5 rules to be acceptable.

I'm now pondering....

We've got a Ranger (BSF), Vitalist (Healbot), and Bloodletter (BSF).

Stream of consciousness ideas (I do this, trust me):
Rogue (Unchained?)
Gunslinger (Bolt Ace archetype)
Maybe one of the Occult classes except I don't like playing spellcasters...
Soulknife, I'll need to dig through my official soulknife splatbooks.  DSP keeps releasing more...

Eiji, have you looked at the Spheres of Power system?  If so, opinion?  If not, don't worry about it, I've got plenty of other ideas for submissions.

I'll be adjusting this list when I get home, expect this post to be edited.

Before I go too crazy, how crazy/bizarre is the current party?  I don't want to go overboard with weirdness if I get the urge to be weird.

Well... given the nature of the campaign, I don't think too weird is a problem. :P Although, there is certainly some appeal to being the "normal" people surrounded by madness, but... I think we're already too far gone for that. Even the "normal" PCs in the party are weird sommehow (my character is almost certainly delusional and is definitely a sadist despite being the party "healer", the dwarf is an extremely greedy communist, and the 3rd is basically a cannibal). And that's not counting the now NPC sentient spider, and the pious intelligent anthropomorphic rat swarm which seems to worship Thoon...

My ideas (if two players are acceptable since Bhu has dibs):

Soulknife with the Psychic Armory archetype (I'll be surrounded by floating weapons with which to skewer people, ranged support dude).

Spheres of Power system character maybe if it's allowed.

I can't find anything else that calls to me that wouldn't be stepping on existing party members toes.  (Although Horror Adventures wrote a barbarian archetype just for me!)

If you want to be a frontline type, my dorf ranger is going more circus act than BSF in having a bunch of animal sidekicks.

Ranger->Deepwarden->Beastmaster->Some 3rd PrC for a flying hippo, etc etc. :P
Leadership to take an awakened animal companion as a cohort and then make a new animal companion  :D

Not a very good frontline, but I've been standing there so far. Hell, I'm on 14 AC for another whole 2 levels (Till 7 -_-') not counting possible minor armor upgrades.

I'm happy with my options of ranged or weird, thanks though!

The barbarian archetype would be filling a role that we already have (it turns your rage into effectively a lycanthropic transformation, I'm in love with it right now but the group doesn't need that even if it would fit in with the rest of the weirdness).

I'll hold off on any more planning until it's determined if Eiji has space for me and what is ruling is on the Spheres of Power system is.

I'm holding out for a game where I can play a Flameskull (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=11549.0) whose goal is to save up enough money to rebuild the orphanage he (allegedly!) burned down himself.  :lmao

Ah, I return.  And I am not familiar with Spheres of Power.  What is that?

Oh yeah, on the party makeup.  While the spider warlock seems to be out, about the pious talking rats: Technically Drosselmeyer (or any NPC whose levels equal yours) can be recruited if you see fit.  That won't necessarily happen on its own, but I wanted to let you know that's a thing you can do.  At the moment though, he's just an NPC and not part of the party.

If you're wondering, he's a truenamer.  My rebuilt truenamer (https://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Truenamer,_Rebuild_(3.5e_Class)).  Little sneaky bit of DM Information; sometimes I use NPCs, enemy and ally, to test out my homebrew classes and systems to see how they hold up.  Well enough it seems, since now I have another player in a different game playing one.

Anyway, random trivia because I'm feeling talkative.

It's got a wiki (http://spheresofpower.wikidot.com/).

It's an alternative magic system (with it's own attack/defenses called Magic Skill Bonus and Magic Skill Defense, my assumption is that you'd just scrap those).

Basic Rundown

No verbal or somatic components for sphere abilities (like psionics).  All sphere abilities are grouped into spheres based around a common theme (weather, light, mind, nature, etc) with some abilities existing to combine spheres.  There are high, mid, and low casters (like vancian casting has full casters and then classes like Beguiler.)

Abilities are point based, although you'll always have something to do even if you're out of points (that something might not be useful.)  Example: The Creation Sphere lets you repair and damage objects with a touch at no cost.  Spell points are pooled for all classes, this makes multiclassing between sphere classes viable.

An overview of the system is here (http://).

I'm not set on playing a spheres of power character so if you don't want to deal with a new system right now I can go soulknife.

Ah I see.  Yeah, probably not if only because I don't know it.  That said I'll look over it eventually, thanks for the link.

Going vanilla soulknife or one of the rebuilds (https://www.dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Soulblade_(3.5e_Class)) of it?  I'll help you with any fluff you like!

No worries, I can understand not wanting to relearn a system.

Pathfinder soulknife!  With an archetype that's not in the srd.  I don't know how accurate this is because I'm too lazy to compare it to the book but it give you the idea.  I'm a psychic armory (https://pathminder.github.io/base-classes/soulknife-high-psionics-psychic-armory/).

This isn't central to my idea, but have you looked through Path of War?  If not, no worries.  I can do fine without it.

Learning a new class is much easier than learning a new system.  Looks solid, I'll allow it.  What book is this from?  Was this Path of War? Derp it's right there, Psionics Augmented.  Anyway, looks good.

I haven't read Path of War but I've heard of it, and if I recall nothing abnormal in there.  Go for it.

I just checked the full listing of the archetype that I linked, the actual archetype doesn't grant manifesting.  That's been granted by the High Psionics variant which is noted in the top if you're like me and read all the soulknife books that get released.

I'll probably be passing on the Path of War stuff, there's too many fun things to spend my feats on already with the Soulknife.  I'll get a build up in the next couple of days for approval.

Woop woop!

Any idea on backstory?  You get some weapon proficiency perks depending where you hail from.  It's nothing too big, but probably a nice little boon.

Is the party still Level 5?  What continent/country are they in?  I assume that I'll be marked as well?

Edit: Apparently this is the first Pathfinder character I'll have made on these boards, I had to make a Pathfinder character sheet template.  That surprised me.

Indeed.  A basic summary of the game so far.

The party members are all Accursed, bearing the mark and exiled/compelled to wander/seeking answers/whatever.  They began their pilgrimage to the center of the world, running into a few hazards, saving another adventuring party, and one very suspicious villainous sort which they've come to calling "Blueberry".  After which they continued their trip and came upon a haunted mansion, which turned out to be full of ash and blood and fire and locked doors and oh yeah there's an undead serial killer in here.  And talking rats.

They're currently trapped in said haunted mansion within a barrier, and just managed to kill the stalking scissorman, leveling up to 5.

I figure they will leave shortly (once they solve a small issue) so I hopefully can introduce you as they exist said mansion.  Knock on wood.

I had a map somewhere, and it's MIA now.  Here, have a ghetto map from memory, it's probably inaccurate but close enough.

Wow that's really bad.  I'm pretty sure none of those continents are correct.  I just remember that they were vaguely in three major continents, and roughly where the party was.

Strata is a flat earth shaped rather like the Outlands.  There's an infinitely tall mountain in the center of importance, and the edges are waterfalls that go into the void.  Circling it is the sun (a hole to the plane of fire), the moon (a hole of the plane of earth) which rotate above, and two spheres which orbit the rim, two eternal storms (plane of air and plane of water).  Due to events in the backstory, something happened at that giant uber mountain and now there is an ever expanding shroud of darkness coming from the center of the world.  It's ruined two nations already and everyone else is afraid it'll keep growing.  And the Accursed, which started at the same time, tend to have visions of things within the shroud.  So the accursed travel into the shroud for answers...

The party is currently in Rubicon (read: England).  They had decided earlier that they would go from their starting city over the land route, through Rubicon, Taphos (read: Egypt), and eventually someplace called Dragon Tower within Rhetor, the City of Magic, within ruined Chrysanthemum.  Their next upcoming town is a place called Roanoke, at the border of Rubicon and Taphos.

You're still in civilization at the moment.  The moment you hit Taphos, expect civilization to quickly die out as you enter the shroud.

Expect darkness, or at least dim illumination, when within the shroud and prepare for it thusly.

Here's a previous post which details some of it.  It was before they left for the mansion, the Marlowe Estate.

Alright, we're in civilization and Rubicon is where I wanted to be from anyway.

Rough backstory: He's from Rubicon and makes a living as a bodyguard and has a reputation as a cutthroat duelist (I'm assuming that Rubicon is as big on dueling as medieval Europe).  He's been known to be paid to fight duels although has never stooped to outright assassination.

He's egotistical and very self-possessed, he'll see his mark as proof of his superior skills.  Perhaps his destiny.

Awesome.  I'll be free hopefully within the next 24 hours.  I've got an idea.  I'll run a bit of side story with you, both for character building and settling you in, and so that I and get the party out of that mansion.

Psysama, hint hint, we need you.  Git at it.

Maximum at first, 3/4ths every other (so 3 for d4, 4.5 for d6, 6 for d8, 7.5 for d10, and 9 for d12).
