Another possibility I was considering was also Samsaran, maybe from Taphos, with their ancestor worship. Perhaps phae and I know each other?
It's such an odd race... I read the srd entry, but I'm stil not sure how they're born... Are they born to human parents? It says they themselves have human children...
It says that their human children sometimes reincarnate as Samsaran, but if no "new" samsarans are born except through this way, you would think that, eventually, the race would die out.
Yeah, but unless they're talking about the spell Reincarnate (which I didn't get from the write-up), that would still entail them being born to someone/something. So I think they're born to humans.

Usually need to find a friendly psion with psychic reformation, or other DM fiat methods, but yes retraining is in.

Really loving the builds guys.  I especially enjoy the Tengu fluff.

So many Samsarans.  Now we have two!  You can be the Blue Man Group.  Or maybe the Blues Brothers.  Don't get blue though, everything will be well.

Why look what I found!

I'll get something up... either tomorrow or Tuesday evening (my time). Got a flight to catch tomorrow, so... haven't gotten around to writing the paladin up in full. XD

Not sure if I'm gonna write up a backstory beforehand or just have it come out during gameplay.

I have a new branch of the organization to set up in where ever we end up starting around :3

If it's okay, I was now thinking of going with Human (for the extra feat), and then re-training one feat into Extra Trick, which I don't qualify for until 3rd level.

In which case, his feats/trick shots would be something like this:
Feats:
  Imp Init
Alert Reaction (combat reflexes keyed on Wis)
  Extra Trick
  Extra Trick

Trick Shots:
Whites of Their Eyes (threaten normal reach with ranged weapon)
Double Jeopardy (threaten smaller of 1 range increment or 30', plus squares of anyone I hit in the last round)
Distracting Attack (anyone I hit is considered to be flanked for the next round)

So... since FitS is not playing a Samsaran, I think I'd like to change the fluff on what region they're from. It makes more sense to me that they'd be from the pseudo-Japanese area, since they're heavily influenced by real-life Buddism (it also gives me an excuse to use the chain shirt + Chahar-aina + Dastana combo :D ).

We could have done that anyway. I wasn't set on that fluff - more just throwing out a suggestion.

The area in this game that is Japanese influenced is mostly human and goblin, it sounds like. If I might influence the fluff/culture, perhaps the idea of reincarnation pervades the culture, and the different races are seen as part of that process: the goblins being the lowest cast, humans the normal citizens, and samsarans the "enlightened ones". If you live a good/productive/faithful/etc life, you have the possibility of being reincarnated into a "higher" form. :D If this is OK, I'll try to write up an expansion/development of this.

Edit: and a question for our illustrious DM: Would it be OK if I/you come up with some Favored class benefits for Samsaran Vitalists? It seems like a perfect fit, as they have a racial feat which lets them transfer their own hit points to others to heal them, which is also a vitalist class ability.

You're not describing Japan, Phae; you're describing India. Ditto for the armour add-ons*. >_>

And since I'm doing a paladin samurai, I really, really doubt that humans would be a middle caste. So... can you please not be from the Japan area at all if you're going to start doing so much fluff like that? Because it's sounding like my character idea, as simple as it is, would end up invalidated by... weird... blue... reincarnating things. :/

*Which was also what I was asking about. Not the blue things who have the most obvious name ever...

The armor add-ons are from Oriental Adventures.

The fluff for the campaign itself (Medved propaganda) says that the goblins are a lower caste (sounds like serfs/peasants). Since Buddism (or at least the idea of reincarnation) is also a pretty prevalent in Japan historically, and Jengu is supposed to be based on it, and the samsaran are heavily influenced by it, it sure seemed like a natural fit...

The samsaran are also supposed to be very rare it sounds like, as they don't even give birth to their own kind. It sounds like they're randomly born to humans via some weird reincarnation (so they're basically humans biologically). I am happy to drop the fluff about them being the "highest caste". Hell, maybe they all wind up going to monasteries as they see politics and the like as being beneath them. So they might basically be outside the politcal/caste system.

Sound OK? Or would you still not be from the same region?

By adding a caste system, you're actually pushing it towards Hinduism; whilst Buddhism deals a lot with reincarnation, castes didn't really make the trip from Medieval India. For one thing, that actually puts the priests at the top. Not so good with a God-Emperor ruling over it. :lmao

I just don't want to deal with trying to work out race-based caste systems. Social class is more than enough. ... especially as this paladin is probably a masterless samurai anyway. >_>;

Anyway, plane to catch, will try and write this character up at the other end.

Would it help you if I replaced caste with class system in my previous posts? Pretty much the same thing, but definitely existed in feudal Japan. I was actually thinking more along the lines of that anyway. And I didn't make up the racial-based part. That was the DM. :P

So long as you don't stick yourself at the top of the heap when your whole race is more of an oddity. That would basically force my character to do what yours asks. Paladin samurai with a social superior present does not have much room for disagreeing. :p
