AoO and IA: Acting out of Turn

Quote from: Lewis Caroll: The Hunting of the Snark.
The morale is never provoke a snark.

Erect and sublime, for one moment of time.
In the next, that wild figure they saw
(As if stung by a spasm) plunge into a chasm,
While they waited and listened in awe.

"It's a Snark!" was the sound that first came to their ears,
And seemed almost too good to be true.
Then followed a torrent of laughter and cheers:
Then the ominous words "It's a Boo-"

Then, silence. Some fancied they heard in the air
A weary and wandering sigh
Then sounded like "-jum!" but the others declare
It was only a breeze that went by.

They hunted till darkness came on, but they found
Not a button, or feather, or mark,
By which they could tell that they stood on the ground
Where the Baker had met with the Snark.

In the midst of the word he was trying to say,
In the midst of his laughter and glee,
He had softly and suddenly vanished away---
For the Snark *was* a Boojum, you see.

Quote from: Complete Mage
"Bah! Face one 'holier than thou' spellcaster, you've faced them all! This so-called scourge doesn't worry me at—"
— Count Lucius Darvold, vampire lord, twice deceased.

One of the most boring parts of D&D (depending on how your DM runs it) is waiting your turn. This mini-handbook will focus on how to get options for action even when it is not your turn. The most common out-of-turn event is the Attack of Opportunity (AoO). The other out-of-turn option is the Immediate Action (IA). Here are the relevant rules from the SRD:

Attacks Of Opportunity

Immediate Actions

When acting out of turn, and when performing actions that change, or do not change, initiative, it is possible to get confused as to which does what. Here are the relevant rules on when initiative changes or not:

Readied actions & Delaying initiative

Quick recommendation for the feats section: Dragonmark Mastery (Spend 1 action point to use your Dragonmark's SLA as a Swift or Immediate action, depending on if it is your turn or not).

Immediate action Heal please!

AoO can be optimized considerably. Robilar's Gambit (PHBII), Karmic Strike (CW), Stormguard Warrior (ToB), Snap Kick (ToB), Thicket of Blades stance (ToB), Improved Combat Reflexes (Drg #340), Greater Combat Reflexes (Drg #340), Backstab (Drg #340) are just some examples of material out there for optimizing AoO.

A few other feat additions

Dutiful Guardian (Drow of the Underdark) Let's you switch places with an ally as an immediate action

Clever Opportunist (Drow of the Underdark) Switch places with an enemy you hit with an AoO as an immediate action

Expert Timing (Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide) probably the ultimate 'act out of turn' feat, even explicitly allows you to take a turn in combat during an enemy's turn

Evasive Reflexes (ToB), Sidestep (Miniatures Handbook), Opportunistic Tactician (Dragon 340) all allow 5 foot steps in place of, or with, attacks of opportunity

Clarion Commander (ToB) allows for a few new options in creating or providing AoO's to allies. The Pile On option combos quite nicely with Hindering Opportunist (PHBII): aid an ally through every attack they make. Throw in Improved or Greater Combat Reflexes for more hitting them power.

Deft Opportunist (Miniatures Handbook) cancels out enemy Mobility

Double Hit (Miniatures Handbook) hit with offhand weapon on AoO

Actually, I'm pretty sure expert timing does NOT allow you to interrupt other peoples actions. A second feat from the same source, interrupt, however, does.

thank you for that correction. i will find a way to look them both up and figure it out.

alternatively, if someone beats me to it, and can quote the texts of both in post or pm to me, that would be great.

Quote
Expert Timing [General]
You can time your attacks for maximum effect.
Benefit: You can delay your action without losing your normal initiative. You may take your action later in the round and then return to your normal initiative the next round. You can even go simultaneously with an enemy who goes on a lower initiative. You can use this feat to attack a wizard trying to cast a spell, thus forcing him to make a concentration check to keep from losing the spell (if you cause damage, of course)

ah, i see. sort of like a virtual limited immediate action. well, since it allows one to effectively act out of turn, even if only against a lower initiative opponent, we should keep it in the list.

Attention Handbook Writers! If you wish to openly discuss your handbook in an easily-accessible location, please start a thread in this section (Do not do so in the Handbooks section), and then reply to this thread. Doing so is not required, but handbooks exist for the purpose of compiling useful information regarding the 3.X system. Such handbooks would do well to have a discussion thread.
