Performance-wise, it's an upgrade over 7, despite adding features. The only thing that's broken for me is a demo game coded in python, which has no visuals any more. @_@

So, I've upgraded 3/6 of the eligible PCs I've got in the house. All three started from Win7, two from Home and one from Pro.

PC #1 - AMD APU Home Theatre PC. No problems at all here. Upgrade took a long time, probably due to the slow processor, but has made the machine faster, and it hasn't had any stability issues at all.

PC #2 - Intel Haswell General Desktop/Server. One minor problem - had to wipe and reinstall VPN software, even though it reported as upgrading fine. Otherwise, no problems at all.

PC #3 - Intel/NVidia laptop. Fairly large problem - Optimus (Switchable graphics from integrated to discrete) no longer works. Computer does not recognize NVidia card anymore, although I can turn it on and off using a hardware button. Otherwise, no issues, and machine is faster.

For me, the issue with PC #3 isn't one, because it's my previous laptop and has a dead battery and sits in my living room permanently running off power and isn't used for gaming. For other people, there's a chance it could be a real problem, although given it's a slightly quirky 1st gen Optimus laptop from the Win7 days probably is the cause of the issue. I also haven't done much troubleshooting on it, because, well, it doesn't change what I use the laptop for at all.

If you have a PC that's a single chip (AMD APU/Intel with no discrete graphics), you're almost certainly safe to upgrade. If you have a more complex rig, I'd recommend waiting until the big feature/patch release hits in September at the earliest. Likewise, if it's your only machine and its working fine, wait. Windows 10 is a nice upgrade over 7 and 8.1, but it won't change your life (unless you like talking to Cortana a lot).

I have less graphics problems than I had before. Previously, my drivers kept corrupting every time I shut down. That... hasn't happened.

Not sure how to check if Optimus is working, though, but hey--I no longer have to boot into safe mode for ten minutes every time I want to play a game.

Meanwhile, my father's graphics card ended up with no drivers in the upgrade, so graphics seems to be a mixed bag. He reverted to 7 because for some bizarre reason, Skyrim got darker even on full brightness.

That helps confirm that I'm not going to upgrade because I'm on a fancy gaming laptop and I'm concerned about driver issues.

However when I buy a new laptop within the next year or two I'll get a Windows 10 one instead of searching for an older OS (I bought a Windows 7 laptop after it had been phased out for 8).

Yeah, I have a SLI gaming laptop, and it is sitting on the sidelines of the upgrade for a while. Next to upgrade will probably be my Media Server/Desktop, which is a general AMD CPU. Don't expect too many issues with that one. Just going to wait until the Sept patches.

A demo game coded in Python breaking ... is actually more worrisome to me than any other game, currently. Will perhaps inform my new team to test any GUIs in 10 ...

I am completely baffled why the only thing that's changed is that it has a black screen.

'Defaults', in that you're asked if you want to use the features that need it.  Because that shiny new feature that's supposed to become more useful as you use it would be pretty damn pointless if it had no data to work from at all. As for the personalised ad complaints... do people really want to be bombarded with irrelevant dating sites that badly? :huh

The privacy settings are opaque and it's not clear what they're there for. But the constant complaints about the stuff that totally decouples it from its reason is infuriating. Because telling people about all the downsides without mentioning why it was implemented at all is misleading. It's basically like going around to people and explaining how a window means people can see into their house, how they lose heat, how easy it is to be heard through, and that it's a huge security risk... without ever mentioning that, say, it makes it easier to actually SEE.

Otherwise known as "Allowing Cortana to work". What do you think Google Now, SwiftKey, Siri, or any other smart keyboard or assistant does? They need your information to work...

Updated a 4th PC yesterday, my Desktop / Media Server, and the change, once it settled in, has definitely made the machine feel faster. No bugs noticed there, but it's an old AMD chip with a basic videocard, so drivers for it should be well in hand by now.

Further impressions of using Win10 a lot are that it makes older PCs much more useful, because of the setting syncing and speed improvements over prior generations of Windows. It also seems to be better about using the GPU for hardware acceleration.

I'd rather have people dealing with update bugs than leaving security holes in what's probably going to be a widely used system even after the patch is released for however long until the exact bug is also fixed.

And if you don't have automatic updates, you get Stagefright and Chrysler. I'll take the occasional update issue over either of those two.

Or something like Heartbleed on a consumer platform, rather than servers. Device hijacking, car control, or just plain ol' stealing all your data because of errors.

halp, how do I make the scrolling not suck anymore.....seriously, this is the worst.  Inverted scrolling is the worst thing Apple gave to the world, and that's saying a lot.

EDIT: nvm, it was buried in a nested setting, things were weird because reasons.  But scrolling back to normal, non-sucky way.

So, after murdering all the privacy leaking things windows 10 does, I still have 1 massive problem with it

Every boot does both a windows defender scan, as well as automatic updating, which completely wrecks my disk io, making the specific machine I have it loaded on unusable for at least the first 10 minutes I start it up. I need to see if anyone has a regedit or powershell script to fix that shit.

There have been reports that Windows 10 still sends data to Microsoft, even after you turn those features off in the settings.

Just FYI.  :rolleyes

So, from reading it, all I can actually conclude being sent/received is stuff that indicates that they built stuff into more basic functionality (weird) and it occasionally connects to the internet for some reason or another... and a machine ID. Given that every damn machine you connect to can uniquely identify your PC because that's how MAC addresses WORK, I can't say I give a fuck. Nor that MS can identify a computer, since that's kind of been a longstanding part of identifying that you don't have a pirated copy.

There were two circumstances where they couldn't tell what kind of data was actually being sent. The data being sent to ssw.live.com and whatever it was doing that bypassed the proxy they had set up.

The fact that microsoft wouldn't give a straight answer about it when asked is also troubling.

And maybe I'm just old, but stuff like keylogging and copying your search and purchase history strikes me as invasive even if they do try to turn it into a "feature." It's like saying: "look, we snuck into your house and put cameras and listening devices in every room--including the bathrooms--but now we can notify you when you're out of toilet paper!"  :rolleyes
