"You know, sir, we burned a nearby barn. The most horrid screaming came out of it. I think you'll find yourself short a few nightmares."

"Well.  Maybe the horses will make it through the night then.  I wondered why they've been keeping away lately.  Maybe they've been picking off my neighbors  and saving me for last.  Or maybe they just don't think of me as a threat."

a tear rolls down his cheek.

You do notice from looking at the place that it should have more inhabitants than himself judging by it's contents.

"I'm sorry for your loss.

How many farms are there withing half a day's distance from here? We've only been to two so far."

"And you've checked them all, or is that ones requiring horses to reach?"

"I'm a farmer, same as everyone else.  I haven't checked many of the farms because at my age I can basically walk to one and back per day.  I sometimes here loud noises in the night but i can't see anything.  I find holes in the fields the next day.  I've no idea what they're for."

Jones turns noticeably pale (well paler)

"They...disguised themselves as my family.  Pretended to be my wife and sons.  It was as cruel a joke as any I can imagine.  What's left of them I burned."

Jones: "Well that solves one mystery at least.  I know who your families murderers are, and I know why they aren't coming here.  But we aren't exactly safe either, and I'm not sure I currently have means to fight what's lurking nearby.  Our options are risk a night ambush, or hole up here till daylight, hope the horses make it, and then ride like hell."

"Well, if we stay and the horses die, we're probably going to be ambushed in the night anyway. No way we make it back to town on foot before night. Not that I have the only vote."

"So who is our new friend riding with?"

to farmer "Are you ready to leave? Is there anything you need?  ANd by chance could you take off your shirt?"

the farmer appears to be an ordinary old man once he disrobes.

"You can ride with me sir, if you wish, but... I didn't quite catch your name. Mine's Will, William McQuillen." Will says as he gets himself dressed and packed for the journey.

"Zephram. If we're going to go we should leave soon.  But where will we go to?"

Jones: "Our job was to check the local farming communities.  So I think it's best we go to a nearby farm.  Yours has become the center of attention of something we very much do not wish to meet.  Even if we meet your families killers things will go better for us than staying here.  I think perhaps you have been very lucky until now."

"Well, I suppose we could get you to Philadelphia, but I would have hazard a guess that we should check more farms. Unless these things you speak of, Jones, are that bad...?"

"His families killers are well enough known to me in story th9ough I have never met one personally.  They are tricksters.  Hunters that mimic humankind in order to get close to us and ambush us as prey.  They are insidious, and they will need to be dealt with, and since we burned most of them alive in that barn earlier, they'll be wanting revenge."

"But what concerns me is the monstrosity that escaped from the first farm we saw.  I think Zephram is alive only because it's lair is somewhere nearby, and the creatures that took his family aren't powerful enough to deal with it either."

"I don't think it realizes he's here.  If he's kept quiet and kept to the house during the night it probably doesn't sense much potential here because all his animals have already been taken.  There's no real food for it, and it gives it a place to retire to during the day.  Probably a large cave or other structure.  When we leave make for the woods.  Despite it's size perceiving it will not be easy, and it'll be too big to follow us through the trees without trying to break them first."
