more on shapechange
« on: November 26, 2015, 03:24:27 AM »
Does shapechange allow templates?

If not (so you can't change into a ghost, for example) then what shape could I take that makes me incorporal (to protect against implosion) while letting me still cast spells?

Depends on the source of the shapechange ability... since most of them use Alter Self as a referance for the ability, the answer would be no in the vast majority of cases... If your getting it as a Changeling, then the answer is definately a no.

Shadows, wraiths, etc, I'd think would work.

This spell functions like polymorph, except that it enables you to assume the form of any single non-unique creature (of any type) from Fine to Colossal size. The assumed form can't have more than your caster level in Hit Dice (to a maximum of 25 HD). Unlike polymorph, this spell allows incorporeal or gaseous forms to be assumed.

Shapechange is just Polymorph without size or creature type/subtype restrictions....

This spell functions like alter self, except that you change the willing subject into another form of living creature. The new form may be of the same type as the subject or any of the following types: aberration, animal, dragon, fey, giant, humanoid, magical beast, monstrous humanoid, ooze, plant, or vermin. The assumed form can't have more Hit Dice than your caster level (or the subject's HD, whichever is lower), to a maximum of 15 HD at 15th level. You can't cause a subject to assume a form smaller than Fine, nor can you cause a subject to assume an incorporeal or gaseous form. The subject's creature type and subtype (if any) change to match the new form (see the Monster Manual for more information).

Polymorph is just Alter Self with a wider range of creature type/subtypes....

You do not gain any supernatural special attacks, special qualities, or spell-like abilities of the new form. Your creature type and subtype (if any) remain the same regardless of your new form. You cannot take the form of any creature with a template, even if that template doesn't change the creature type or subtype.

Alter Self, the base effect for both spells... and look at that, a restriction that was never over-ridden by either of the other two spells... cannot take the form of any creature with a template, period.

Shadows and wraiths are not templates.

Hmm... never noticed that before...

Shadows cannot speak intelligibly.
Not exactly mute. Sounds like they can make language-like noises, but just can't articulate actual words. Since you won't actually be a shadow, I'd think this might not apply. (It's not in the creature's stat-block, and it's not like you exchange/lose languages known when you change into other creatures).

Wraiths explicitly can speak so you're good there.

Wraiths speak Common and Infernal.
