Min/Max 3.x / How to counter burrowing
« on: October 09, 2012, 11:55:54 AM »
How would one go about preventing an intelligent creature with burrow speed from simply making itself scarce underground when it looks like it's losing?

You can try drawing it far enough out from burrowable terrain or you can try incapacitating it/killing it so fast that it's simply unable to do so in the time between 'I'm losing' and 'I'm dead', but other than that? What tactics can one use to prevent a creature from using it's burrow ability?

Legends of the Heroes / Character personality framework
« on: September 29, 2012, 09:26:59 AM »
There’s a guy in one of my groups that has asked for my help in a RP matter.

He’s an avid fantasy literature reader and manages to write quite in-depth and interesting backgrounds for his chars, but he has trouble developing interesting personalities for them in play. All his characters, despite awesome backstories feel bland, one-dimensional and more or less copies of his own personality. He’s realized thaat too and has asked me for some help.

Thing is I’m not really able to help him. I do RP more or less on the fly. I enjoy trying to read people, and that’s what I do with my chars too. I have the background, and then I ask myself ‘how would a guy shaped by these experiences react to situation X?. I can tell him how a given char's personality feels to me, but I've got no idea what to suggest to help him build character personalities himself.

What I’m looking for is a more structured approach on character personality development. Maybe a set of questions, or a list of things you should think about in regard to your character, or maybe something else althgether. Anything helps.

Gaming Advice / Grappling and mounted combat
« on: September 26, 2012, 10:47:51 AM »
After a string of more or less funny events involving an intelligent Black Orb of Dragonkind and a series of 10 or so consecutive rolls under 5, me and another player ended up having to make new characters. I'm rolling a druid and he's rolling a DMM cleric.

My animal companion is a magebred brown bear, and since he's getting 1 level of prestige paladin (and therefore has Mounted Combat) the cleric wants to ride the bear into battle. Since the bear has Imp. Grab, I expect it to be in grapple quite a bit. Therefore my question: what (if anything) happens to a rider whose mount is grappling?

Only things I could find on the subject were in a Rules of the Game article, but they deal with what happens when the rider (not the mount) is grappling.

Min/Max 3.x / Constructor or Malconvoker?
« on: August 13, 2012, 06:56:38 AM »
I'm trying to get a summoner build off ground for an upcoming character, and I'm a bit torn between either StP Erudite/Constructor or Wizard (or Archivist if we don't get any other divine caster)/Malconvoker?

Which one do you guys think is better at providing party frontline and why?

My main dilemma is something along the lines of: Can Astral Construct, with the limited (compared to SM) customization options keep up with  Summon Monster in terms of both raw power and utility?

Min/Max 3.x / Blind party
« on: July 24, 2012, 12:12:42 PM »
Well, not technically blind, just that everyone has abysmal spot/listen checks.

Somehow my current party is comprised entirely of int-based casters, we have no wisdom, and nobody has any ranks in spot and listen.
Party consists of:

Crusader 1/Focused Transmuter 3/Eldritch Knight 2 (me)
Psion 5 (kineticist)/Anarchic Initiate 1
Wizard 5/Anima Mage 1 (DM allowed qualification with Improved Bind Vestige)
Psion 3 (seer)/Archivist 1/Psychic Theurge 2

Now we can/will be able to probably handle short range detection quite well between the likes of Blindsight, Tremorsense, Touchsight and Detect Hostile Intent, but how would one go about actually detecting stuff at longer range?

Best idea I've had so far was having the Anima Mage bind Malphas in 2 levels when he is able to, but +5-7 Spot/Listen (even boosted to 10-12 with items) seems awfully little for level 7.

Min/Max 3.x / Spells for the lazy wizard
« on: July 21, 2012, 10:44:09 AM »
I'm thinking about making a wizard character who uses magic mostly to make his life easier (or at least used to before an intelligent sword forced him go adventuring), so I'm looking for spells of 2nd level and below that he could use to improve his own QoL. What I have so far:

Cantrips

Dancing Lights/Light - never wake up in the dark ever again
Mage Hand - no need to actually get up and walk there in order to retrieve nearby objects
Open/Close - don't touch a door handle or lid ever again
Amanuensis - in case he wants to copy some books or the like

1st level spells

Alarm - no need to worry about burglars anymore
Endure Elements - never feel hot/cold
Mount - why walk when you can ride?
Unseen Servant - misc uses around the house
Appraising Touch -  never get cheated by a merchant again
Greater Mage Hand - see Mage Hand

2nd level spells

Arcane Lock - same as Alarm above
Locate Object - in case he misplaces something
Magic Mouth - alarm clock
Levitate/Spider Climb - climbing stairs is tiresome
Dark Way - instant bridge
Surefooted Stride - helps you walk over difficult terrain if you ever need to go there

Anyone got any other spells to add?

Gaming Advice / Embrace/Shun the Dark Chaos target line
« on: May 11, 2012, 02:57:52 AM »
While looking to do a bit of DCFS for a Bonesinger (namely give it Requiem) I've notice the following:

The Target line reads 'Willing living creature touched' for Embrace the Dark Chaos but "Willing creature touched' for Shun the Dark Chaos.

Has this been errata-ed anywhere, or does DCFS simply not work on undead?

Gaming Advice / Do familiars gain feats?
« on: May 07, 2012, 02:26:02 AM »
I was always under the impression they don't.

A friend of mine is about to start DMing a 3.5 campaign, and one of his players has approached him with this issue, so he came to me asking about any RAW on it.

The relevant text:

Quote
For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use the master’s character level or the familiar’s normal HD total, whichever is higher.

I've always considered that this doesn't grant you any feats since you don't actually get any HDs, but on a closer look I can see how the number of feats you have can be considered an effect related to the number of HD you have.

Has there ever been an official ruling on this?

Gaming Advice / List of outsiders that can cast Animate Dead?
« on: May 06, 2012, 01:14:07 PM »
Anyone has one? Or at least can name a few? The lower HD the better, as I'm looking into them for Planar Binding purposes.

Thank you :)

EDIT: also, outsiders that can cast desecrate would be nice as well(any others apart from Rutterkin?).

Min/Max 3.x / Dread Necromancer PrC suggestions?
« on: May 01, 2012, 04:04:04 PM »
I'm about to stat a tier 3 (or less) campaign in which I'm gonna be playing a necropoiltan Dread Necromancer (mainly focused on creating/controlling undead) in all undead party (Dragonfire Adept, Warblade and Beguiler going for Chameleon)

Starting level will be 4, and the campaign is expected to carry on in the low teens or higher and enemies will mainly be Undead, Demons and Dragons.
I'm not sure what exactly to go for PrC-wise after level 8.

Any suggestions?

Gaming Advice / Qualifying for a feat via an item?
« on: April 30, 2012, 01:16:54 PM »
This has recently occurred for a friend building a character for an upcoming campaign (more exactly qualifying for Improved TWF via Gloves of Dex +2).

I know that you can qualify for PrCs with items according to CW, but I was unable to find anything specific about feats (be it a 'yes' or 'no')
