I play 4x games for the ability to grow an empire. I find that fascinating, to the point that I often completely ignore my military until someone actually declares war on me, and then I turn my industry on them like my pants are on fire and I need soldiers to put it out.

I'm learning that the game has a much MUCH steeper learning curve than I'm used to with this kind of game.  I haven't even hit an end-game crises yet and I keep restarting because I realized I've been doing something wrong.

I'm in love with the ability to make my own civilizations though, and I like that the game seems to randomly generate enemy ones so that I could be up against anything.

Haha, I play that way too.  I consolidate and make myself have as much of a base as possible.  However I'm churning out ships every now and then if for no other reason than upgrading them is so damn easy.  It's not like in Civ where I HATE making guys early game because they end up just sitting around being completely useless because I can't just click an upgrade button.

The Link only costs 30 bucks at full price on Amazon and it's been that way for months. Also my local dollar store sells perfectly good 6ft HDMI cables so I already have the ability to stream everything my computer can do onto my old TV screen rather than Steam only. Added bonus, it works with my existing keyboard, mouse, and controllers.

Steam can be great, and lowering the price of the connector is nice, but don't forget you're paying nine bucks for something that's going to push another fifty dollar controller sale on you to play games you already paid for and can already play just fine. And even if Steam Link can let you play videos across it, it's impotent to know Smart TVs and Window 7+ already come with the software to do that.

A) A steam link for a third of the price is still a good deal.

B) Ugh, smart tvs.  I specifically chose a non-smart tv when I bought mine last Black Friday.

Still in Japanese, I'm guessing?  :P

PC version is best anyway.

I would glady play the PC version again-if it didn't keep crashing on my computer every time there's an update. :shakefist

No word on language. Chances are japanese only, but I can dream. Even if it's japanese only, i'll get it.

I'm guessing you don't use Tweaker, do you?

I do, and it worked relatively fine for about a year. But then the game started crashing after updates again. I even attempted some clean re-installs, but at best it would run once and then fail again the next day. Haven't tried again at all for half a year, in particular because got a lot of backlog to catch up and real life work increasing and dling 50+ gigs every time I wanted a taste just wasn't sustainable.  :(

so, I went over to a friend's house to do some work on their computer and found that they still have Simcity 2000 Special edition, Simcopter, simtower, the only sim game missing other than The Sims was Sim Earth. I was very tempted to ask about borrowing them.

But then the game started crashing after updates again.
Easy fix, when running hacks and custom patches don't update the game until the hacks & patches support it.

Honestly, you'd be surprised at how many problems are fixed by not staying up to date but instead lagging behind an update or two to let them post hotfixes for their "fixes". And that's just official sources of course, 3rd party is a different ballgame (see above).

Phantasy Star Online 2 is a mmo. If I don't update, I don't get to play (shame because even solo it would be a pretty nice game). Which is basically what I'm doing already...

There seems to be quite a few free server projects out there for PSO2 after a really quick google skim. I poked at one that seems dead since 2016 and it looks like emulation is simply save files and standard multiplayer match making which if you're solo'ing isn't something you really need to worry about anyway.

You could also try using an onscreen translator instead of trying to hack the game's files.
Here is the first hit off Sourceforge.

SorO, he's already using what is essentially the best way to play the game translated. Gets around pretty much every other problem the game would otherwise have, too (proxy for region-blocking, file checking, issues with Gameguard - which in spite of being a HORRIBLE anti-cheat engine SEGA insists on using, etc.).

That said...

Osle, what have you tried using with Tweaker to solve these issues? Does the game simply crash for you, or is there something else?
