I want something easy to reference!  Discord is not easy to reference!

So...there are a lot of Mongoose Traveller 1E books.  What do I need to look at?  How in depth do I need to go when it comes to looking at the books?

Just look at the core rules for MGT1. You won't need to look at anything else for basic game imperials, and I promise not to blow you out of the skies with High Guard heavy military boats inaccessible to you.

...although the best strategy for freetraders in space combat is still to be somewhere else than where space combat is happening. Freetrader ships designed for keeping as much freight on board for going from A to B are not exactly well-equipped for facing "open" and "fair" space combat.

Now that all have filled out their career, you should also divvy up the skill package:
Astrogation 1
Broker 1
Comms 1
Engineer (Jump Drives) 1
Gunner (any) 1
Medic 1
Pilot (any) 1
Social Sciences (Sophontology) 1
Steward 1
Streetwise 1
Vacc Suit 1
Zero-G 1

Each skill is available only once, for the whole group. If there is consensus that a certain skill should go to a certain character, you may decide so. After that, everyone rolls 1d100 and takes turns picking skills in descending order.

The only really necessary skill for a Pilot is Pilot (Spacecraft). Comms is useful to have as it is usually the pilot who keeps radio contact with the starport and other vessels, Zero-G and Vacc Suit can be very helpful if artificial gravity and/or life support fail.

SDK, that's not really how it works.  Once we're done giving people skills that they need we just all roll and then pick in order until there aren't any skills left.  If you get stuck with Steward then you get stuck with Steward.   :P

Scooping a gas giant: Dexterity, 1-6 hours, Routine (+2)

Meaning that you roll (Dex (1) + Pilot (3) + Mod (2) =)6+2d6 against the target number of 8+. You can't actually fail the roll, it is just about what good a job you do.

Fuel scooped from a gas giant is unrefined, which creates a -2 penalty for the jump results roll to perform the actual jump. Many starships have processors to refine the fuel, but lab ships unfortunately do not. However, the chemical equipment in the lab makes it easy to jury-rig a processor:

Jury-rig fuel processor: Education + Physical Science (Chemistry), 1-6 hours, Routine (+2)

The actual processing will take two more days after that. Up to you if you want to take that extra time or risk a misjump.

For the actual jump (p.141):

Plotting a course: Edu+Astrogation, 10-60 minutes, Easy (+4), 2 parsec (-2)

Divert Power: Edu+Engineer (J-Drive), 10-60 seconds, Average (+0)
(Note that many engineer go slower (p.50) and take 1-6 minutes for a +2 bonus on this roll.)

Jump Results: 2d6 + grade of success of the Engineering check (-2 if using unrefined fuel): 8+ accurate jump, 1-7 inaccurate jump, 0- misjump

Aside from the ship owner's papers, you should decide now what gear to take to the starport.

Note that the law level on Quarhe is very restrictive at Law Level 7. Melee weapons and stunners are the only legal weapons.
The starport is Imperial territory at Law Level 1, and you can store items that are illegal planetside there for a fee if you think that you need to access them dirtside, but you can get into a bad jam if you take them past the gates.

It's on p.176 in MGT1 core under the technology column. A rule that is often not enforced, but often will be for body armor and the like if the planetary authorities don't like you or just consider you as an easy target to be fleeced for a local penalty fee.

Law enforcement is very unlikely to recognize cybernetics for what they are, nor do they have access to scanners capable of detecting them. You'll be fine.
