The combat map on the Link shows the primly dressed woman approaching fast, in the air above the north end of the barracks building. All 45 images plus copies in group9 go into motion as the cackling woman swings into view, her laughter boldly betraying her position. She had swung around for her next attack and came in faster than anyone has a right to do, but with Spellcraft it's clear that this did not have the familiar look of a Haste Effect... she simply seems to have a frightening economy of motion: minimum fuss, maximum result.

Many things happen nearly in the same moment, as if the nightmarish cascade of events inside the prim woman's Dream far exceeds the rush of events elsewhere in the Bral compound.

Ror9 thinks "Chicka-Chicka-Boom-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!" and he can feel the two charges at the bridge erupt, sending rock lazily soaring toward the ceiling and cracking apart the support wedge underpinning the foot of the bridge; the huge pieces of the wedge begin a slow tumble toward the river. Ror9 immediately loads the Circle of Blood.

Even though the woman is quick, group9 is quicker, anticipating her every move slightly via the combat map on the Link. First Vir9, then Halt9, then Tanatou9 surge a bit closer to increase the surety of damage, as they begin firing and snap off shot after shot in quick succession. Tanatou9's crossbow crank whirs with blinding mechanical speed; he gets off two shots. Halt9's hand is a blur as well, winging four arrows at the horrid creature. Vir9 adds three more.

Ror9 triggers the Circle of Blood he just loaded, hoping to beat the shafts to their destination to give them extra damage, and hoping that the worst of the shrapnel has either passed unseen through the impenetrable fog already, unnoticed, or falls short of group9 - but he can't wait any longer, it has to be Now.

The shafts arrive on target and EVERY SINGLE ONE HITS!! The shafts pound into her with extra force from Ror9's Circle of Blood. The marksmanship is uncanny... but the shafts don't seem to be doing as much damage as expected, and some don't seem to damage her much at all, as if the damage sent was not entirely received. Nevertheless, nine shafts protrude from her prim suit, and red dampness spreads from several.
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)

To Halt9's practiced eye in attacking human opponents, something seems wrong; she just isn't quite responding in a human manner even though she looks the part she is playing, and his expectations drop slightly for the damage he can inflict from his detailed knowledge of where to hit a human opponent. It's her Dream; who knows what she really looks like?... more information from group9 onto the Link.

Then a very deep rumble of sound finally arrives from the bridge explosion, more felt than heard, and a slow shockwave rolling through the air tosses everyone, bowling them like tenpins. Star's urgent voice on the Link is almost lost: {Star} ...Sonic...

Halfaz9 follows the shafts to the same target, buffeted by the deep roar from the bridge. He is caught mid-change from Lillend to Efreet, a strange looking mix of Blue Green wings and Red massive arms.

Shimnack9 flickers in Halfaz9's heated attack that leaves the woman's clothes and hair smoldering with scorch marks. He strikes so deeply on the first, second, and fourth attacks, Halfaz9 has to wrench Shimnack9's double blades free. The third attack scores her as well. She is fleeing, trying to elude him; to continue the attack he must follow; he finds he is flying faster than she is and can stay with her.

Deep bass rumbles, smashing sounds of tumbling rock, punctuate Halfaz9's attacks.

As Halfaz9 comes in for the fifth attack, another massive wash of sound and vibration rips the air as the bridge finally plunges into the river and smacks the surface in twin geysers toward the ceiling. Halfaz9's aim is thrown off and the woman finally manages to evade his swing.

With his superior flying speed, Halfaz9 swarms all around her, swinging his long, wickedly curved sword Shimnack9 from above, below, and all sides in a true three dimensional aerial attack. He hits again on the sixth, but then Halfaz9 is pelted by a few heavy chunks of rock spinning slowly past him, and he misses the seventh attack. He moves into Dancing Mongoose form which steadies him and his two final attacks hit her as well. His strikes too gain extra weight from Ror9's Circle of Blood, but once again they don't seem to do as much damage as they should and only the first four attacks leave spreading red stains though all of them leave scorch marks.
(click to show/hide)

The few chunks of rock that hit Halfaz9 were just the leading edge of a deluge. A flood of water and rock shards begins to tumble down in slow sheets, a slurry of water and gravel in undulating, Dreamy motion, and visibility drops toward zero.

At last the woman manages to elude Halfaz9 in the fog, rain, and shower of falling rock; he loses her momentarily.

Finally free of Halfaz9, the woman rights herself. Her fury only seems to have increased. Then, she shouts one Word.

One Word only, filled with the power of Divine Law, she unleashes in a terrifying shout, right above group9, focusing her anger, her hatred, spreading Dream wide so that none escape its area:
!יהוה

Halt9 and Vir9 wink out, along with their sixteen Mirror Images.

The seven arrows Halt9 and Vir9 fired wink out as well. With the shafts gone, the woman's freely bleeding wounds quickly stop; it's not clear how much damage remains, though it must be some, because the rents in her clothes are still very damp with red.

Then she is gone, as she vanishes into thicker fog.

As she departs, the shower of water and rocky chunks suddenly races back to normal speed, and quickly lessens. The remnants of group9 are elevated in flight and well away from the foot of the bridge, so while some of the biggest chunks leave bruises, no real damage is sustained.

Ror9 the Lillend, Halfaz9 the Efreet/Lillend, and Tanatou9 the Lillend feel unaffected by the Word the woman pronounced.

On the Link, as the combat map updates, the woman's placement is colored approximate, based on her speed and trajectory when last seen, but her Life Energy is much dimmer than before. She seemed badly injured when she flew off into the fog.

Once again, Star's warning begins on the Link, just before Halfaz9 finally completes the change.... but even the two seconds are not enough; moving with unbelievable speed, a big, muscular cloaked figure appears in the fog cloud, wielding a blade of humming, crimson light.  Completely ignoring the Mirror Images and going directly to the real 9s, the figure takes two steps, swinging the humming blade once each at Ror9 and Tanatou9.  Each feels a sharp, searing cut, and then nothing as the bodies wink out.  The symbols for Ror9 and Tanatou9 disappear off the combat map.
(click to show/hide)

The figure takes two more steps, cloak whipping, closing with Halfaz9 much more quickly than should be possible.  The crimson blade flashes once, removing Halfaz9's left arm at the shoulder with the ease of a hot knife through butter.  Along with the hum, there is a crackling hiss as the wound is immediately cauterized.

Then, with a final, spinning movement, the blade flashes again, and removes Halfaz9's head.
(click to show/hide)

The area of the combat map around location9 loses most of its information as the entirety of group9 is destroyed by the woman and the cloaked figure.  Small bits of data are received from the parrot cloud deep in the ground, but other than that the map is blank.

...a short time passes while location9 is dark on the combat map...

Sable arrives underneath location9, well away from the parrots. They are beneath the south end of the barracks; he beneath the small plaza just to the south of the demolished bridge.

The combat map lights up again in that area, to the limited extent Sable and the parrots perceive it, with a little more information from the Ptolemaeus copies who are approaching and can hear sounds in the area.

There is the sound of the river rushing in its banks, now gurgling loudly in rapids around the fallen bridge and supports. From all the splashing, it seems that some of the sharks are getting trapped by the debris, turning back to herrings, flitting through the blockages, and then turning back to sharks.

Having arrived, Sable does what he does: He scouts and investigates. Around here was where Captain Brightblade and What's Her Dreamy Law were causing havoc, so best play it safe and stay in the stone. From here, he'd start his sweep. Worst comes to worst, if that stone... glide... thing was going to wear off, he'd keep as tiny as possible and investigate on foot. Easily overlooked and often ignored. Their loss, really.

Though, this was a dangerous hot spot. Time to up the ante. Every ten feet (Actual, not Sable Feet), he took a handful of the BOOM! and armed it with a piece of scrybubblegum, and left it in the rock behind him.

He was creating a minefield.

"This is Sable on the Weaselnet. Leaving a few surprises here in case Obi-Wan Canblowme or Lady Dreamscape come this way."

Checking the layout of CC on the combat map, Sable finds that it’s a big place; the island is about 400 to 500 feet long and 250 to 300 feet wide.

Sable has 16 handfuls of BOOOOM! Love Janis and 16 detonators. However, he can split them in half; half the BOOOOM but 32 of them. Or smaller, and more. If he really put them every 10 feet he would run out in an area more or less 40 by 40… or 40 by 80 if half-charges.

Sable said in his search he was looking for offices as well as creatures. He’s sweeping buildings from underground, using his X-Ray Vision look at them from inside the rock.

Starting at the closest end, the north end near the bridge, he quickly finds what he is looking for in the triangular building across from the barracks.

It’s a big interior space, a right triangle about 60 feet on a side and 85 feet on the long wall. There are five cots, more bedrolls, and some clothes and personal items. No weapons, armor, or other gear. It looks like about ten to twelve people’s worth, all more or less human size or somewhat larger. There is even some leftover food, and signs of a meal. There is a large central table, and chairs for seating around it. No papers, records, maps, though there are tacks in the wall suggesting some things were hung there. Tacky.

Sheesh... this place was huge. Time to re-evaluate. The minefield would have to wait, as he didn't have enough Kaboom! to go around, and as his teachers back in Meridian used to say 'If you didn't bring enough for everyone...'

He moves to investigate the larger triangular building. Now this was what he was looking for. Signs.

"Found an administrative building, but it looks like it was evacuated to. The whole damn operation must have gotten up an left. It even looks like they took their maps with them. Left the tacks though... hmmm..." and Sable unrolled his own copy of the map and did the whole overlay. "If that's there... and that's there... Hey Star, hon, any of those tacks line up with anyplace interesting or boring on the old map actual? They took the map, but may have left a marker."

"There's a meal here, so they probably left somewhat in a hurry. Though.... someone left something behind." And Sable, being the kind and respectful rapscallion that he is... started to rifle through the personal effects to see who they may belong to. Guards, leftovers... or hopefully... some of the hired muscle.

{RorO on the Link} Well, they did just get invaded by a party of ~70 people + 1500 sharks.  I guess we interrupted them during dinner.  Presumably they ran off to their battle stations.  Wherever those might be...

As for the slaves, remember what Dumathoin said:

**spoiler=Ror: Dumathoin Speaks

Q14-Are there currently any slaves present in the Illithid Slave Compound on the Rock of Bral?

"Slaves haven’t left or died."

So they're still somewhere in the compound.  But where??

Whether by chance, or by the care and expertise of the enemy, other than the five cots and eleven sets of bedrolls there are no personal objects, not even so much as a piece of fletcher’s cord, or a whetstone, or even a hairpin, to give Sable a clue as to what combat skills and weapons the enemies have.

Sable’s excellent searching skills now have an exact count on the cots and bedrolls, and do show that some of the bedrolls seem thoroughly used and quite rumpled, while others seem barely used, if at all.

Studying the tacked spots on the wall shows that multiple items were displayed, but there are no markings on the hard stone behind where they hung that suggest any information about their nature.

With similar care, no papers, plans, maps, or other documents were left lying around for someone to find.

Scouring the room for hidden compartments, secret doors, and the like, shows nothing. Whatever there is to find is in plain sight, more or less, to be found by thoroughness of investigative technique, or by inspiration, or both.

An examination of the remains of the meal on the big central table in the room shows no special menu items for unusual appetites; no bottles of fresh blood, for example.

Sable’s thorough search does find a sheet of parchment, though, stuck facing the underside of a serving platter, much like the one Vir brought back from the front room at the Illithid Embassy.

It has greasy spots on it, and after Sable carefully peels it away from the platter, a big dollop of sticky dessert topping is revealed near the center of the parchment.

There is a series of scratch marks on it still visible despite the dessert and grease, closely packed lines of different weights. Sable has seen this writing before, on the note that he heisted from the Drow SpellJammer Captain’s private safe:

Illithid script.

On the Link, Star reads it aloud for him:

{Star} It’s a food order! It is signed with a title: “Doorkeeper of the Illithid Embassy” and it’s a memo to the inn down the street, the one Vir saw delivering food to their supposed festival.

It requests eleven individual meals… they all seem very bland and predictable to me, like what an Illithid thinks other races like to eat. Very stereotypical and formulaic. The Illithid are so orderly and predictable, they believe it is their strength, but it is their downfall…

And at the bottom it requests five hundred and twenty-five portions of bread and herring broth. That is good news indeed!!

Well. And it lists the eleven individuals with titles, of course. The Illithid way of thinking about non-Illithids they must work with, is much like the way they think about each other. All titles, all formal. It’s very likely the sequence of the list is significant too, in a hierarchical order… not by effectiveness; instead, by perceived standing:

Force Leader Arkesh
Master Stooth
Wrangler Thrash
The Margravine
Lord Bane
Master Throisar
Master Gleron
Master Skellum
Master Jorden
Old Reliable
Dormin

The last two were not accorded titles, how interesting. And all of them except two are written simply phonetically, suggesting there is no prior Illithid relationship of significance with the individual or their race… Except the third and the first.

While the rest are probably just purchased help, the third name is written in a form according alliance, though the third name is also written phonetically… too bad, that obscures its origins, it could have had a racial form to the name; I wonder if that was intentional…

And the first name on the list is written in a racial form, one the Illithid accord to their arch-enemies in the Underdark: the Drow… and it is a Drow name by the sound of it. Their force leader is almost certainly a Drow. Or at least named as one. I wonder…could this connect to the Neogi ship the Drow captured, with the forged Illithid offer of drydock?

Too bad Janis is off the Link… she is very astute at these political puzzles.

A Drow force leader in contract with the Illithid Empire to oppose our raid, then a Drow ship enticed to Bral by a third party to embarrass and discredit them. It certainly feels like move, and then counter-move by another player. But who would gain by the counter-move?

……………Sable, can you find anything at all of a personal nature? The least, tiny scrap?

Star gave him a lot, and now, it was time to act.

Sable would phase out of the floor of the room, and actually enter the room proper. Maintaining his incredibly tiny form, the Fine Weasel (In more ways then one :) ) would start the investigation proper. Secret compartments, hidden floors, hidey-holes, false ceilings, and such were built to be invisible to the unaided eye of a five foot tall occupant. Sable was neither unaided or five feet tall. The tiniest imperfections would hopefully stand out like sore tails to him now, and aided by his gift to see through solid matter. Having traversed the floor, he would move to his next targets.

His search would continue along the walls, searching for imperfections in the stone, different tints to the mortar holding key stones together, or breaks in any wooden panels that were too fine to see normally. A few key knocks, as hard as his tiny fists could manage, could also detect hollows without damaging the surface.

From there, he'd inspect the ceiling. False ceilings were an old favorite, along with fake beams and hidden catches near support beams. He was reluctant to do any serious damage to the place, considering that whoever came back here would likely notice if the walls were scratched to hell and back. These were some of the sneakiest creatures in the realm, he'd have to think extra sneaky to out-do them.

He'd even give a cursory scan under the cots to see what was hidden underneath them, and under the mattresses. He'd give a look through the mattresses to make sure they didn't stuff important documents inside the lining. These beds either were assigned to folks who didn't sleep, and they were used for something else OR... there was double bunking. Cruel men were still men, after all.

Sable renews his searching, coming directly into the room and scrutinizing the tiniest details in his tiny form.

He keeps relaying what he sees onto the Link, and presently, as he reexamines the bedrolls, he realizes he is looking at something which didn’t register before because it was so ordinary, but it is exactly what Star asked for… one bedroll has a pair of long hairs caught in a fold of material: one black, one off-white in exactly the same shade as the dreaming woman who attacked group9; excited, Star confirms the color match over the Link.

{Star} Hair! That was my exact thought! I was just about to suggest checking for it; that’s perfect, Sable… hair has a great deal of potential to it. That’s why I make sure never ever to leave some anywhere. Not a single strand. But it’s a very common error; creatures aren’t even aware they are shedding it.

Hair is both a living part of the creature, and an intimate possession. Useful for Location Magic, which I would do, and even for Compulsion Magic, which I would not do; powerful Spelltags for Voodoo Magic and other similar techniques can be built on just a bit of hair. And also for Protection Magic, which I may do depending on the Spell; some of them have a Compulsion component to them, so I consider them on a case basis.

The local conditions inside Bral make it less useful than elsewhere because the effectiveness of Location Magic here is so reduced. But it is still very useful for bargaining because of its lethal potential. If the dream woman knows her Magic and appreciates the danger, she may choose to trade quite a bit to get it back… if we have any opportunity to do so. And I’ll think on what Protections might be devised...

…if it pleases you to bring the hairs back. With a bit of Similarity Magic, a fundamental principle, and my Sleepweaver Dreamring, a Ter’Angreal that… sorry, I was moving into a classroom lecture. Oops. Well, that should be enough for a quick measure to invoke some power from them against her when we meet in person.

Sable’s meticulous searching also finds a trap door in the floor where it meets the north wall, almost a perfect seal with cracks so fine they can’t be seen by most eyes, cracks that just follow natural lines in the polished stone floor tiling.

A hidden stair leads diagonally away and down to a small landing on the river flowing below; he missed it in his first searching from below the building because almost all of the volume of the staircase lies outside the dimensions of the walls above it, sitting under the street along the north side of the building where a channel from the river is cut through the rock.

The hidden stairs are thick with undisturbed dust and the space of the stairwell is filled with cobwebs.

Sable carefully rolls the hair up like a fine rope, careful not to damage it or fray it any further. She thinks her hair is long and luscious? Ha! Sable could almost CUT himself on those split ends. Eh, who listens to a master sneak, though?

"On my way. Found a staircase hidden under a hatch in the floor. It leads down, and it looks unused. Suspiciously unused, if you catch my drift. There's probably not this much dust on the Quasi- What's it- demi-something plane of Dust." Sable never did grasp hyperspacial translocational geography much.

"Unless I'm the last one to discover this stairwell since Bral was built. Which I doubt. Highly." he snarked as he started to make his way back to Star at all due haste.

"Hmmm... well I'll be damned."

"Hey Star, hon. I know you're super busy, so when you can spare three brain moments?" he paused on the link. "If folks are antsy about using anti-magic to protect themselves from that dream bitch's dictum..." he chuckled, "... would a magical Silence make them feel better? And protect them. Make them feel better WHILE protecting them?"

"Dictum." another chuckle, "Who NAMES these things?!"

Star responds to Sable indirectly: {Star} There are no Casters among the copies… but Ror, would Silence cause a problem for what you have given everyone?
