Fox and Tree language list, sources needed
« on: December 13, 2011, 05:05:31 AM »
Back on the last board, a very kind user helped me by finding an incredible list of languages. Between he and I, we might have actually found every language in 3.5 but three or maybe four.

I need all the languages so I can sort out a list of "usable" ones for the Fox and Tree martial discipline, which is uses Speak Language as its key skill. Even though Speak Language doesn't have ranks or a limit on how many you can know. I've had to make some fancy adjustments for that fact, and it has been fun, but...

It would be very helpful if folks could help me track down the sources of all these languages. I don't have all the books they were found in, and it would be nice if you kind users could lend a hand.

And here's the list:

* Lost language
** Cannot be learned
*** Due to its supersonic and subsonic utterances, most races cannot speak this language
† Ambiguous concerning whether or not it can be learned

?? Is this actually a language? I can't tell.

... interesting.
I guarantee there're more languages floating around out there.

Dark Speech is only the most obvious ... even if
it's other uses dominated previous discussions.
  :tongue  ;)  :whistle

This was never much of my concern at all,
what with Comp Languages, Tongues, Telepathy.
etc

+1 Bhu ... I knew this thread and Drammor
hadn't had any activity for years.  And that
someone must have collected more goodies.

Seemed a timely bump, for another thread.

DMs should treat random languages (that are learnable) as accents/pidgins of common. Otherwise the Speak Language skill is (even more) useless because you won't be able to Learn Them AllTM with skill ranks.

hmm ... idk how much real world language can be used for a functional Speak Language skill, let alone balancing said skill points.  The points-of-light setting could be like the Mongol empire, largely denuded of people but with a 3 to 5 hundred year old trading language.  That might fit your last post.

People who can read Romance languages can very often without any prior training, read other Romance languages, just because so many rootwords are the same Latin word upstream.  That's more like Decipher Script.  Similar, in China people will hand write Chinese calligraphic symbols in the air, to "translate" across unintelligible dialect boundaries.
