Shotguns for hunting, rifles for hunting, pistols for hunting.....
oscelcamo, guns are used in different ways. There's a lot of different types of rifles alone. Some people like hunting, and they can use pistols, shotguns, or rifles, which all have different strengths and weaknesses, and different games they are used for (try going duck hunting with a rifle? No, you use shot and a shotgun. Deer? All three work, depending on the slug used in the shotgun). Guns are tools. And as such, they are made for specific purposes. Use the right tool for the right job. Besides, restricting you to only one gun? now that's some freedom restricting. That would be legitimate freedom restrictions that the gun nuts are always crying about.
As for policies, which this thread is about, I believe the policies that are definitely necessary are much like veekie said: registration and official sales. Much like a car, you must have a registration, and when you sell a gun, you must update that registration. The other person now registers it, and you can't be implicated in the crime anymore. If you sell a gun without registering the sale, then you should be fined. If the gun subsequently is used in a non-violent crime (well, any crime involving a gun where no one gets hurt, like an armed robbery where no one is shot or something) it's at least misdemeanor, and if the gun is used in a violent crime, it's a felony. This is for the seller. This lets everyone still have their guns, discourages the sale to those without valid backgrounds by legitimate gun owners. It won't get rid of all gun sales to restricted persons. It's not designed to. That's already illegal, and as someone said an issue of enforcement. Much like a car, if your gun is used in a crime, it is up to you to prove that you had no idea it was being used in such.
Also: trouble killing things. Ever try to take out big game with a single shot? it's kind of hard. Man, you have a severe problem with guns. Could you not call them "murder tools" please? Keep the sensationalization out of the discussion?
