Madoc moves through the brush, relying on stealth while taking up behind another tree trunk. Unwilling to be the first to engage the beast, he also chooses not to be solely reactionary to it.

Red moves up towards the beast, wanting to be able to strike at it if it made a run past her to the others.

Ebony takes a step forward and launches a bolt of darkness at the creature.

The monster, seemingly unhurt but certainly enraged by Ebony's actions, decides that it will charge down Red, seemingly totally unafraid of vegetation, undergrowth, and anything smaller than a decent fortress. Smashing through obstacles that would slow a creature heavier that its bulky weight, it unleashes a terrifying howl as it impacts into Red with a mighty crash, and with a vicious bite whose saliva is extremely toxic.

There is a spark in Gwaedwen's eyes as the huge beast steps within range of her more effective abilities. A cold wind rustles the underbrush, and small animals flee the scene as she intones the words:

"R̶̡̟̹̥̹̱̪̳̰̙͖̀̏͋̂̊̈̃̊͘͘͜ḧ̶̢̨̨̦̠̩̖͍̤̠̰̬́͊͛͋̔͋̒͊ę̵̢̯̫̞̳̰͚̞̖̏͊́̕ẃ̷̢̱̲̤͔͈͚̓͋̈́̐͊̋̎̄̀̍͋̕͠į̴̢̛̬̖̹̙̼̼̠̀̅̈́̽͛͐̀͐ ̸̢̢̘̥̬͕̟̜̰̥͍̺͋͐ͅg̵̞̺̠̣̲̯̯̭͛̄̇̅͛̐̄̄̈́̆̃̇̿͌ẁ̷̧͚̦̞͑̈́̂̌́á̴̝̻̜̘͕̈̄̔̽̂̓e̸̛̻̩̟̘̰̖̮̮̻͖͙̳͓̅̏̄̐͝d̶̛̛̪̫̣̻̝̣͍͖̺̫̥̺ ̸̛͚̥̦̗̗͍̦͚̲̞̽̾̉̽̍̕̚͜ḃ̸̡̧̮̼̫̲̘̺͓̝̝͊̀̆̕͘y̵̺̖͈͐̓͋̓̔͝w̵̨̨̲͑̄̄̆́̎͆́͛̏͐̚͝y̸̛͎̲̜͍̫̞͒́̀̆̾̐̈́̑̉d̷̟̙͒!̵̨̨͕͖͙̯̦̟̩͍̫͚̦̪́͗̓͂̀̽̄̏͂͐͗͘"

Seeing the huge monster stunned and helpless, Gwaedwen moves up to it. She spends the next ten minutes using its acidic blood to draw patterns on its spiked skin drawing out its lifeforce, culminating in a deadly touch to its throat that carefully avoids piercing the skin that contains the remainder of the caustic blood.

Madoc puts his weapon away as it lulls into a stupor. Seeing Gwaedwen approach it, he almost instinctively reaches a hand out in caution, but thinks better of it. She clearly had been the one to stop the beast.

"Remind me never to underestimate the flonha."

Once the ritual is completed and its caster seems satisfied with its results, Madoc approaches her.

"I must apologize, Gwaedwen. I admit I judged you for your size at first, but your talents are clearly unbounded by such measures. Red Harvest may be the Strong One, but it seems that you are the Powerful One."

He bows his head in deference.

"Now, I believe we have other prey to pursue."

Realizing that perhaps the course that he had taken the first time was an inappropriate one laid simply for the purpose of distracting followers, Madoc turned his passage backwards, returning until he had reached the fork in the path, this time taking the northward path.

By now, the light was growing dim, and as sun set, the going became harder, although not so difficult that a skilled tracker of his sort would lose the markings left behind by the Kier. Here, they seemed a touch fresher than they had on the south-westerly spur. Perhaps that meant that the prey they hunted was in the offing.

A certain sense told Madoc that the prey had to be very close as he rounded the corner, seeing ahead of him a glimmer in the night. It was, perhaps, a hundred or more yards distant, as he would judge things. It meant that the target was here, and ready for the picking.

The soft step of a paw upon a leaf was all the warning that Madoc and his colleagues got before javelins arced from the night, some coming from the left, others from the right. For all his vaunted skill as a tracker, he had stumbled into a trap, and one closing quickly from either side.

Gwaedwen fires off a bolt to show that she isn't simple prey, wounding one warrior at the midsection. Immediately she reloads another for the inevitable next volley.

Madoc takes the hits, grunting in pain as the ranged strikes pierce his flesh. His axe whips into his hand in an instant, however, as a cool rage fills his eyes. He throws the axe at one of the ambushers, but the blade finds not purchase as it bounces off a nearby tree and returns to his grip. He spits out a curse and scowls, his luck and his reserves of energy running out on him.

Ebony took a step towards the group, annoyed that people are dying in the wrong order. Her people need to die last! She begins channeling energy into a spell and unleashes healing and protection energy towards the group, hoping that it can lead to the death of her enemies.

The pressure from the circling Kier continued, as they slipped closer through the trees, followed by another barrage of throwing axes from the more adept combatants amongst their ranks.

Red shifts slightly under the barrage of attacks, magical healing, more attacks, and magical defence--then swings her polearm arcing downwards towards one of the attacking Kier, having sized it up as the most convenient target.

Seeing the carnage that Red could cause in a single stroke, more than a few of the attackers focus their efforts on the armoured giant, especially as their target had skittered out of range. Those whose original prey was still their focus, however, continued their assault.

Seeing that the enemies make no attempt to close in, Gwaedwen decides that keeping the combat the way their foes try to force on them is a losing proposition - and her crossbow doesn't impress them much anyway. She rushes the warrior she had already wounded before, and presses her hand into his face as she öets the negative energy course through it.

Madoc huffs at the ill luck he was encountering, in addition to the hits he's taken from the foes he has sworn to destroy. The battlelust boils his blood, and he sheathes his bounding axe as he stalks out of the brush toward one of the kier. As he makes approaches, he unhitches the strap of the massive treebreaker strapped to his back and hefts it in his hands. Without so little as a moment's hesitation, the Yn Gyntaf sweeps the blade through air and flesh alike, cleaving into the enemy before him.

Finally, a grin spreads on his face as he tastes the first true victory of his day.

Ebony wonders how competent these Kier are, since so far their attacks have been predictable and easy for her to dodge. Or maybe the stronger ones were targeting her allies? Still irritating. Seeing Madoc still fairly injured, she decides to offer some modest assistance, and spreads that assistance to herselfGwaedwen as well.

Seeing their clanmates fall, the elite warriors of the Kier fall back to their most basic instincts - harry the weakest prey. With swift movement and sudden throws, they concentrate all of their ranged attacks on the poor Madoc.
