I found this
https://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/UA_Downtime.pdf

p12 has scroll crafting rules. which explicitly allows using a prepared spell that is not in your spells known.
although the craft duration is beyond insane. taking 2 years for a level 9 spell and 1 year for a level 8.

So a lore master at level 14 can craft a scroll of any spell of any class..
converting it to a wizard spell in the process.

Hey, yeah.

It's quite fabulous.  We discussed it around here, when it first came out.
http://minmaxforum.com/index.php?topic=17797.0
Link on the first post  (I've no idea if that wiki got it word-for-word).
It's better than wish, 'cause you can cast (!) another 9 and learn more 9s on your own.
Whole multi-year series of Unearthed Arcana.

Crafting?
Most people seem quite unhappy with how stupid proof + simple it is.
3.5e had a make anything interpretation of the Artificer
and the MIC had an almost wishlist option (nigh universally ignored).
4e followed this lead with wishlist and 1 ritual crafting = near automatic.
So as unrewarding as 5e crafting is fluffed not at all ... it does work.
And you'll still be grumpy about it.
Yea.
And thank you for that link

D&D 5e / Lore school learning all the nonwizard spells in the game
« on: June 08, 2020, 10:30:10 PM »
I noticed something amusing in the lore school which supposedly comes from unearthed arcana (I do not own the book and have to rely on the wiki, which is unreliable as people often post their homebrew and claim it is official).
http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/wizard:lore-mastery

Their level 14 ability is
Quote
Master of Magic
At 14th level, your knowledge of magic allows you to duplicate almost any spell. As a bonus action, you can call to mind the ability to cast one spell of your choice from any class’s spell list. The spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots, you mustn’t have it prepared, and you follow the normal rules for casting it, including expending a spell slot. If the spell isn’t a wizard spell, it counts as a wizard spell when you cast it. The ability to cast the spell vanishes from your mind when you cast it or when the current turn ends.

You can’t use this feature again until you finish a long rest.
The key part is
Quote
it counts as a wizard spell when you cast it
5e still does not have official magic item crafting rules (but there are a few unofficial ones).
but in previous editions the key component to craft a scroll was being able to cast the spell.

So in theory once the official scroll rules are out, you could use this feature to create a scroll with a wizard version of any spell ever printed in 5e. And then copy it from the scroll into your spellbook as a wizard spell regardless of which class it originally belonged to.

Just an amusing wizard lifehack I thought I would share

If the Karsus Avatar (or wtf) spell is Level 12, I suppose a "Lesser Deicide" spell that would work on demigawds is Level 13.
So then there's a Mass Lesser Deicide perhaps a level 16.  And working it on up some more, to replicate what the Spellplague did ...
Karsus avatar is a level 12 spell that was able to steal the divinity of a greater goddess (one of the most powerful ones at that).
Why would it imply that a spell that can kill mere demigods is even higher level?

Paladins fall.  They aren't trained in tumble and have armor check penalties.
Thank you, this made my day.

Because at least 1600 years of ingraining magic into ppls lives from -339 to 1358 isnt, ahem, magically going to make it all disappear from ppls minds just cause it got a little risky. Even a borked wizard is better than anything else nonmagical, powerwise.
People don't remember what happened 1000 years ago, the last 200 years are characterized with multiple mystra deaths, with 1/3rd of wizards just flat out dying from the backlash of her death (at least on the 3rd death. 1st death it was almost all of them, not sure how many died 2nd death). And then massive parts of the world being ravaged by spellplague.
The fact she managed to die twice in the last 200 years is concerning and is recent history that people would actually know and remember. Heck most races live longer than 200 years, so you should know people who lived through 2 of her deaths.
Being a paladin is far more dangerous than being a wizard would ever be. You're not allowed to avoid trouble whereas being a wizard is all about avoiding trouble.
You are vastly exaggerating paladin falling mechanic. Were there two instances where 1/3rd of all paladins died spontaneously (or just fell) in the past 200 years? I don't think so.

Also, there are other options between just wizard and paladin. Clerics, druids, and psions were all just fine when mystra died.

I have noticed in discussions about what you would do if dropped in faerun, or fanfics, or just general stories set in faerun or similar dnd lands that people tend to think being a wizard is the best.

However, is this really such a good idea? for all of a wizard's power, Mystra keeps on dying and that causes many wizards to have their head explode or something. Isn't being a wizard known as an incredibly unsafe occupation by now?

Mystra Deaths:
-339 DR = Karsus' folly
1358 DR = Time of Troubles, killed by helm
1385 DR = Killed by Cyric and Shar
1480 DR = came back to life, spellplague finally over
1482 DR = for once an edition change that does not involve mystra dying. instead its Ao doing another sundering

So... yea. being a wizard doesn't seem like the healthiest career choice considering the above. Karsus was far enough away to be considered an outlier. But then she manages to die twice a mere 27 years apart. Magic is then horrible for almost a hundred years, and then you get a new edition a mere 2 years after the last catastrophy finally ended.
Would you really trust your life to such an iffy prospect?

Thought Bottle, Complete Arcane.

thank you. reading through it. the relevant functionality is the storage of experience
Quote from: complate arcane p150
Experience: A thought bottle can be used to offset level loss as a restoration spell can, but is effective against level loss that even restoration can’t undo (including levels lost due to death, but not the negative levels bestowed by magic items such as a holy weapon). When a user’s experience has been stored within the bottle, he can subsequently access the bottle to restore his XP total to exactly what it was when it was last stored, negating any levels lost in the interim. Storing experience in the bottle is diffi cult, and the user must pay 500 XP (deducted before storing) to do so. Only the creature that stored experience can retrieve it, but if the bottle is destroyed or lost, the user suffers no ill effects.
That... would take some pretty loose interpretation to say it gives back XP you can assign to any level you choose instead of regaining the same classes as before.

I am vaguely remembering a devel + restore XP exploit and wondering if someone could point me at the item/spells involved.

IIRC it went something like:
1. Be a level 20 wizard. (for example, its not the only way to do it, can be a bit lower level and a different class)
2. Use [item/spell that makes item], recording your current memories/level/XP against potential losses
3. get a reliable controlled source of level drain.
4. level drain yourself to 19 negative levels.
5. choose to intentionally fail saving throws, you are now truly level 1 in every way.
6. touch [item], you are instantly restored to the same XP as before, but not automatically restored to the same class and levels. You now level up with whatever classes you choose. such as level 1 wizard + level 19 sorcerer, or level 19 psion, or level 19 cleric, or level 19 druid, or level 19 artificer.
7. when done doing whatever needed that other class, repeat the process and return to your default build

Does someone else recognize this and can tell me which item/spell was involved in this?

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: The Great Shadow Debate
« on: October 03, 2017, 03:55:18 AM »
I take the side of allowing my players to voluntarily disbelieving their own shadow spells.  I kind of see it as a kind of zen state of mind:  "Reality is mine to shape and control, I am one with the shadow and it is one with me".
you meant voluntarily believing?

As i've continued to explore every possible permutation of metamagic, metapsionic, psi-spell, and spell template, one thing has been nagging at me. How does one price a +0 level metamagic feat on a scroll?

At first glance, one might assume it is free. After all, +0 is Zero. However, I have a different take on it, and if I am incorrect, I challenge those of you who believe so to prove me wrong.

The cost increase to the production of a scroll with a +0 metamagic feat is zero.
The cost to buy/sell them in a market should be slightly higher due to the rarity and increased skill of the creator. (the creator had to waste a feat slot for this)

That said, scrolls are really sub par compared to anything else. Like wands.

The only reasons to use a scroll (instead of selling it for cash) is:
1. It is a really rare spell that you cannot pay another wizard to copy from a trade spellbook.
2. You are a level 1 wizard, you received scribe scroll for free, and can't yet make wands, so you need to keep a stock of 20 sleep scrolls to make you into an overpowered murder machine.
3. You don't have a means to get a handy haversack (free action to withdraw a wand in combat) and want to put multiple different spells on a single scroll (yes, you can do that!)
4. it is a very situational spell that you will only use a few times so not worth wanding, despite the inefficiency of scrolls
5. you don't want to take item crafting feats, and are a wizard (have free scribe scroll)

... actually in retrospect, nevermind, scrolls are good

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: A "Powerful" Race Rant
« on: October 03, 2017, 03:28:09 AM »
Wow, the gnoll is awful!  :banghead

1. pure martials are weak to begin with. They sacrifice mental stats for physical ones. (with a net +2, which is completely standard)
2. they have LA for no reason at all, making them even weaker.
3. they are forced to take 2 levels of racial hit dice, and those 2 racial hit dice are objectively worse than any class in the game (a commoner has slightly less HP, but better skills).
3a. they get screwed on skills. Since their level 1 is always going to be the gnoll class, which only has spot and listen and nothing else. So the initial windfall of skill points from level 1 is all lost on cross class training.
3b. they get screwed on BAB and saves, their racial hit dice are poor on those and are worse than warrior.
3c. they get screwed on HP, their racial hit dice have less HP than any martial class.
3d. their 2 RHD give them 0 feats, they only start with the level 1 feat anyone gets.

So yea, this is pure doodoo.
Luckily there is a very easy fix. Get rid of the 2RHD and LA. they then become a slightly better fighter (which is tier 6 suckage) than an elf (but still sub par, worse than a human or anything large sized).
